These 7 credits are divided as follows: During the 3‐week intersession (May 30, 2017‐June 16, 2017) all students will be enrolled full‐time in a course entitled “Law and Correctional Institutions,” for 3 credits. In addition, the Remington Center’s summer program will run the first 9 weeks of the Law School’s 10‐week summer session (June 19, 2017‐August 27, 2017). During this session, all students will be enrolled in a course called “Legal Assistance to Institutionalized Persons” for 4 credits. During the summer, students will also receive a stipend of $2,500. These summer courses are “consent of instructor” courses. After the April 14th spring meeting, we will send a final list of accepted students to the Law School’s main office for authorization in the registration system. Accepted students should be authorized to register on‐line for the summer courses by April 24, 2017. If you have any trouble registering after that date, please email Remington Center staff at [email protected]. Please register for both summer courses no later than April 30th, 2017. 1 Fall Registration and Credits As the “course requirements” sheet indicates, all summer students are expected to continue into the fall and spring semesters. The fall clinical courses are also “consent of instructor” courses. Because we will not have a final list of accepted students until after the April 14th meeting, we have not yet authorized students to register for fall clinical credits. We will authorize students for fall credits at the same time we authorize students for summer credits. You should be authorized to register for fall credits by April 24, 2017. Specific registration information for each project, including course titles, numbers, and credits, is listed below. We do not require you to pre‐register at this time for your fall clinical courses. You may wish to wait so that you can speak with your supervising attorney about exactly how many credits to register for. However, you may want to register no later than mid‐summer in order to be sure that you are eligible for fall financial aid. In the meantime, be assured that, as a continuing clinical student, you will be authorized to register for fall clinical credits. In planning your fall schedule, you should assume that you will be working at least the minimum number of hours (4 hours/credit/week) specified for the clinical project you are enrolled in. During the fall, students in some projects may also be expected to participate in a weekly small group meeting during the fall. Moreover, during the fall students in the Wisconsin Innocence Project are required to take a 3‐credit classroom course in addition to their clinical work. Course title, credits, call numbers: Note: You will be notified of the appropriate call numbers once the fall 2017 course schedule is posted. LAIP students: You should register for Law 862 sec. You should register for as many clinical credits as you agreed with your supervising attorney for a minimum of 4 credits, with a minimum of 2 credits in fall and 2 credits in the spring. Summer Stipends All summer 2017 students, both residents and nonresidents, will receive an appointment as a part‐time project assistant (PA) for the months of June and July, along with 7 summer session credits. Each student will receive a stipend for the PA‐ship, which is considered income to the student. Based upon the current PA salary rate, we anticipate that the total stipend for the summer will be approximately $2,500. The PA stipend will be divided into two payments. Checks will be issued in early July (for your work in June) and early August (for your work in July). We have produced a separate information sheet on financial aid for summer clinical students. Among other things, this information sheet explains the interaction between the PA‐ship and summer financial aid. Summer Tuition and Fees Because you will be appointed as Project Assistants for the summer session, you will receive a full remission of summer school tuition. University segregated fees are not included in the tuition remission. Thus, you will be required to pay back segregated fees to the University. For summer 2017, the segregated fee assessment has not been set; it will likely be around $300 for the 7 credits. 3
