2015 Annual Report - Island Volunteer Caregivers

2015 Annual Report
January-December 2015
Island Volunteer Caregivers is a highly respected 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation
that has provided volunteer services and a helping hand to Island neighbors since
1996.
Scope of Services
Who we serve:

The elderly and persons with disabilities or chronic illnesses who want to
remain in their homes but need assistance with routine activities they can no
longer manage on their own

People recovering from a medical condition or mental stress and needing
temporary assistance with their day to day activities or transportation

Family caregivers who need respite care for a loved one

Residents in skilled nursing or assisted living facilities
What we provide:

Transportation to medical, physical therapy or counseling appointments in
Kitsap County and downtown Seattle

Transportation for activities to maintain health and well being, such as exercise classes at the Senior Center or swimming at the pool

In-home services such as:
Companionship
Light housekeeping or meal prep
Light yard care or home maintenance
Assistance with pet care
Reading to visually impaired persons
Respite care

Errands, including:
Grocery shopping
Picking up prescriptions
Delivering flowers

Advocacy and referrals to other appropriate agencies

Visitation to facilities to provide companionship, reading and music

Quality of life activities, such as going to a concert or museum

IVC sponsors two support groups: a Grief Support Group and a Caregivers
Support Group
We offer services freely, without consideration of race, religion, disability, sexual
orientation, or social or economic status. We collaborate with other social service
agencies to provide a safety net for the most vulnerable. These include: Helpline
House, Housing Resources Bainbridge, Senior Information and Assistance and
Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center.
In addition to our basic and life enrichment services, there is additional value to what we provide:
Human Health and Welfare Benefits

Community health benefit, decrease in health care costs and reduction in hospital readmissions due to
access to transportation for critical medical appointments and follow up

Decrease in isolation and depression by providing companionship and quality of life opportunities that
keep people engaged and involved in their community

An increase in independence and feelings of self-worth due to support with activities of daily living, allowing persons to remain in their own homes

Support for family caregivers to help them maintain their own health and avoid burnout

Gifts of unconditional love, hope, and respect which are basic ingredients to good health, happiness and
wholeness

Strengthened community through opportunities for meaningful and life enriching volunteer service and
connections with neighbors

Health maintenance benefit; access to physical activities decreases falls, increases strength and endurance

In terms of cost effectiveness , when individuals cannot live at home without help, assisted living can range
from $3,000-$7,500 per month and nursing home care can range from $80 to $100 thousand per year in
today’s dollars
According to Aging in Place: A State Survey of Livability Policies and Practices, written by the National Conference
of State Legislatures with the AARP Public Policy Institute, nearly 90 percent of people over age 65 want to stay in
their home for as long as possible, and 80 percent believe their current residence is where they will always live.
However, for older adults to age in place, their physical and service environment must be accommodating.
Program Service Statistics
In 2015, 156 IVC volunteers provided 7,651 hours of no-fee service on
behalf of 216 care receivers. We had 114 new care receivers and 59 new
volunteers in 2015. Year over year, the number of new people requesting
services continues to rise, up more than 16% in 2015. The challenge we
faced in 2015 was keeping up with the pace of new people requesting
services. The breakdown of 7,196 hours of direct services are:
· Errands/Grocery Shopping: 735 (10.2%)
· In-Home (Respite/Companionship/Light Housekeeping and Meal
Prep): 2,464 (34.3%)
· Life-enrichment Activities: 642 (8.9%)
Yard/Pet Care/Computer: 122 (1.7%)
· Transportation: 3,234 (44.9%)
Volunteers logged over 24,447 miles for 2015, more than double the miles from 2014!
I absolutely don’t know what I would do without your volunteers to take me to the doctor and grocery shopping.
And some days it’s very difficult for me to even vacuum my apartment; I just don’t have the strength. These
amazing people—it’s just like a fairy tale!—IVC Care Receiver
Thank you to all our volunteers, who are the perfect example of compassion, dedication,
unselfishness and dependability—you are the heart and hands of IVC!!

Major Activities of 2015
In January we began the implementation phase of our 5-year Strategic Plan, looking at focus and timing of
specific initiatives for the coming year. Shortly thereafter, the Senior Center invited us to join in an exploration
of the Village Concept for Bainbridge Island, hosting a community information session attended by more than
70 people. We felt this was a perfect opportunity to explore one of the main goals and strategies of our plan,
which states “IVC is actively engaged with other community leaders to distinguish BI as the most livable small
town in America with the highest percentage of seniors and disabled living independently and participating in
their community.” Through this process, we have continued to explore the village in collaboration with other
organizations serving our community, such as Housing Resources Bainbridge, the Area Agency on Aging, the
Senior Community Center and others.
Our Annual Summer Dinner Auction was another great success, netting
more than $76,000 to support our program services. At this event we
previewed our new video, highlighting the special connections between
volunteers and care receivers. Corporate sponsorship for this event, which
brings in nearly 42% of our annual income, came from Harrison Medical
Center, Bainbridge Senior Living, The Suquamish Tribe, Todd Adams DDS,
Peninsula Cancer Center, Town & Country Market, Hill Moving Services
and New Motion Physical Therapy. In addition to raising funds for a great
cause, this is always a very fun event in a lovely setting.
In June, Island Volunteer Caregivers received a Bainbridge Community Foundation Grant for development of a
comprehensive Training Program, which included support from the following donor advised funds: Averill Park
Fund, Gloria Collins Brownell Fund, Michael Milligan & Jeanne E Fund, Plan B Fund and Sophia Fund, as well as
BCF Discretionary Funds. With the assistance of 3 students and their professor from San Jose State University’s
Industrial Design Program we created an online training program for new volunteers. This makes the information volunteers receive much more consistent and allows Robin, our Program Manger, to focus more time
on the individual orientation and get to know the skills and interests of our volunteers. The students were able
to gain real world experience developing a program that has practical use and were delighted to know that
their work was contributing to the mission of IVC.
In mid-summer of 2015, with support from a grant from Grace Episcopal Church Outreach and assistance from
Cook Family Funeral Home, we embarked on a special initiative to promote Life-enrichment opportunities for
care receivers. We contracted with Lynn Murphy as Life Enrichment Coordinator for one day a week and for
development of a “living” Resource Guide for Bainbridge Island. A monthly calendar is now being sent to care
receivers to let them know about the many activities available right here in our community and to encourage
their participation.
Throughout the summer months, volunteers assembled and delivered more
than 350 exquisitely prepared flower bouquets to care receivers, people
who were lonely or homebound, or just having a difficult day. The ever
popular “Flowers From the Heart Program” has been in existence since 1997
and relies on the generosity of Islanders to share the bounty of their
gardens. This simple but eloquent expression of caring brings smiles and
pure delight to many people.
In December we completed a training module for Medical Note-takers, who are volunteers that can accompany
people to medical appointments and create a written record that can also be shared with family who may be
far away. As anyone who has dealt with complicated health issues and multiple appointments knows, remembering all the information that was discussed during a visit can be completely overwhelming and having an
“extra set of ears” is invaluable.
