What to Expect When you first meet with your therapist she will talk with you about your condition and the pain/symptoms you are experiencing. This will allow her to better understand where to focus the massage and gain you the greatest benefits. Being as specific as possible with the therapist on what you are feeling, how long the symptoms have been happening and frequency of them is most beneficial. The therapist will ask you to remove clothing from the area that will be worked on. The rest of your body will be covered with a sheet and blanket for comfort and privacy. Pressure of the massage will vary depending on each patients comfort level. It is OK to talk with your therapist about what you are feeling and asking questions during the massage. Full Body- Includes back/shoulders, hips, legs, arms, neck, face/scalp. Abdominal massage can be done upon request. Full body sessions are typically a minimum of 60 minutes. Sessions of 90– 120 minutes can be done upon request and are usually for those that require more focused work on a particular area. Chair Massage– Sessions of 10-30 minutes done in a specifically designed massage chair. The patient is fully clothed and areas of focus are neck, back, hips, arms and hands. If the patient is unable to sit in the massage chair, sitting in a regular chair is just as beneficial. Focus Area– Have pain in the shoulders, neck, arms, or the back? Focused massage can be done on those areas alone in sessions of 15-30 minutes. This allows the therapist to fully work out any tightness and get you up and moving again quickly. Fibromyalgia – Massage therapy is one of the most beneficial treatments for Fibromyalgia pain and fatigue. Massage can reduce pain, eliminate muscle stiffness, and relax the mind & body. In addition, massage has been proven to soothe the central nervous system, increases the production of neurotransmitters that help with mental & physical health, produces endorphins which reduce pain, increase blood circulation, increase range of motion, and reduce depression, anxiety & stress. The amount of pressure the therapist uses is based on what each patient can handle and will be adjusted to their comfort level and tolerance. Sciatic – Sciatic pain is a tingling, numbness, and/or weakness along the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve emerges through deep muscles on the back of the hip and runs down the back of the thigh and in some cases to the foot and toes. Sciatica can be caused by a tight muscle, the Piriformis, which entraps the sciatic nerve. Sciatica can also be caused by a lumbar disc compressing on the nerve, this can cause nerve damage if left untreated. Massage therapy is very beneficial for those with sciatic pain. Massage helps to ease muscle spasms and increase oxygen flow to the muscles. Massage to the hip (Gluteals and Piriformis) can be a little intense.
