Reader Response 1 for Great Gatsby
In the first chapters, how specifically has Fitzgerald created the
characters of Nick, Tom, Daisy, and Gatsby? Create a character table in
which you cite lines that indicate descriptions, opinions, values,
attitudes, etc.
What differences exist in the values of the Midwesterner and the East
Eggers?
Reader Response 2 (10 min.)
In the first 4 chapters, is Fitzgerald’s depiction consistent with
biographical, cultural, and historical aspects we have examined thus
far? Cite evidence to support your answer for the biographical,
cultural, and historical connections.
Reader Response 3: Characters
Nick says, “There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy, and
the tired.” What does he mean? To which groups do the characters
belong? To which group does Nick belong? What do these
characters teach Nick about himself? Explain.
Reader Response 4: Zelda and Daisy
Complete this after completing the article and video clips on Zelda.
Is Zelda Daisy? Explore specific ways (ie: mannerisms, expectations,
values, disappointments, etc.) Use examples from video, article, and
novel to support your claims.
Reader Response 5:
Nick describes that Gatsby had created an illusion of “colossal
vitality” (95 or 101). What has Daisy come to represent? Why has
Gatsby created such a “colossal” illusion? How does Nick feel about
the elevation of Daisy to almost epic status?
