[KISS THE COOK with Matt Gourlie]
African spices
add kick to salad
MATTHEW GOURLIE
I rarely get writer’s block,
but I do get cooking block.
There are always standards to fall back on, but
there are plenty of times
where I feel like trying
something new and have
no idea what to make.
Which leads to wandering
around a grocery store
looking lost when I’m really just being indecisive.
I was wandering aimlessly when I had a sudden
thought to see if I could
find Jamaican banana
ketchup (it’s much better
than it sounds). There was
nary a Jamaican condiment to be found, but in
the hot sauce aisle I did
find Nando’s peri-peri
sauce. I was curious and
decided to buy some.
Nando’s is a South
African chicken restaurant
chain with a MozambicanPortuguese theme of cuisine. They’re very popular
in Africa, Britain and Australia, but seem less wellknown here.
Peri-peri sauce comes
from the African piri piri
chilli pepper (also called
the African bird’s eye
chilli). I had heard that the
sauce was spicy and delicious. It’s rare for me to find a
sauce as a jumping off
point and beyond making
chicken I wasn’t really sure
where to go with the periperi. I found a recipe online for a “salad” that was
basically grilled chicken,
grilled corn, avocado and
some micro-greens added
as garnish. I respect the
chutzpah of calling that a
salad, but I decided to try
to balance out the greensto-meat ratio a little more.
A word on spiciness. I
went with the medium
spice with the Nando’s
sauce. I could have gone
hotter, but the flavour was
good and I was getting
enough heat while still
being able to really taste
the sauce. My mother will
get flush eating mild name
brand salsa. If that sounds
like you, then this sauce
probably won’t be your
thing. If you like spicy food,
this stuff is pretty tasty.
When used in the salad,
the spice is far from overwhelming. I was worried it
might be a little dry, but
with corn and onion in
each bite it wasn’t an issue.

“Furious 7”
enforces family first
NATHAN LIEWICKI
Tricked-out rides, street racing, crazy
crashes and fireballs have defined
The Fast and the Furious series. The
seventh and final edition, “Furious 7,”
showcases those same things, but
the film will forever be remembered
as a tribute Paul Walker.
The 40-year-old died in a car
crash last fall, but watching him
star in the familiar role of Brian
O’Conner was like old times,
just like 2001 when the series
first launched in theatres.
O’Conner, living the suburban lifestyle with his wife and
son, joins forces with his
brother-in-law, Dominic
Toretto (Vin Diesel), and other
members of the team to hunt
down Deckard Shaw (Jason
Statham).
Putting Shaw underground proves more difficult
than expected, especially
when Somalia terrorist
Jakande (Djimon Hounsou)
enters the fight, joining
forces with Shaw.
The movie displays an
array of scenery, including
the Caucus Mountains in
Azerbaijan, the United Arab Emirates and, of course, the streets of
Los Angeles. That said it all comes
down to cars and the tricks Tiretto’s
team can pull off with them as they
pursue, steal and withhold a computer terrorism program called
God’s Eye that can turn any technological device into a weapon.
And although there are comedic
elements within the film, it’s message is simple: don’t mess with family.
It’s that message that is on display
throughout the film, but especially at
the end when the focus is on O’Conner spending time with his wife and
son at a remote waterfront.
And as Wiz Khalifa’s “See You
Again” is played in the films final moments and that smile of Walker’s emanates through his character, you
realize the need to be grateful and
hold onto everything you have, especially family.
Dissecting the most talked-about
album of the year
REVIEW
BY LUCAS PUNKARI
First things first, I’m not a
hip-hop connoisseur.
Almost everything on
my iTunes is rock related
or has a guitar included, so
that’s where my musical
tastes lie.
That’s not to say I don’t
hate hip-hop. The Beastie
Boys’ classic record Paul’s
Boutique is one of the best
albums I’ve ever heard and
I pretty much stop anything that I am doing to
hear new tracks from
Kanye West or the outstanding duo known as
Run The Jewels.
But as a whole, it’s not
really my cup of tea, unless
there’s something that gets
a lot of praise and I feel like
I need to check out.
Which brings me to
Kendrick Lamar’s new
album To Pimp A Butterfly,
which came out last
month.
His third studio release,
A4
its already being acclaimed
the best record of 2015 and
possibly the best album of
the entire decade.
If you’re already into
hip-hop you’ve probably already listened to this
record from front to back
on multiple occasions.
However, if your a casual listener to the rap
game like myself, is this
worth a purchase?
After listening to it a
couple of times, I can
safely say yes for a couple
of reasons.
One of the highlights is
the production. It’s not like
the last Kanye West
records My Beautiful Dark
Twisted Fantasy or Yeezus
where you have no idea if
anything is going to be a
radio friendly hit, but it’s
not often that your hearing
old-school funk and jazz
influences in a mainstream record.
The other highlight is
the lyrics Kendrick is spitting out. Obviously a lot of

IRYN TUSHABE
When the sun starts shinning, Holly Bell’s clients
want new hairstyles.
“They want something
fresh and fabulous,” says
the hairstylist from Bella
Wellness.
“A lot of people want
shorter hair in the spring –
shorter, blonder – anything summer-looking to
brighten up their mood.”
Holly is a seasoned hairstylist who likes to keep up
to date with new hair
trends. Sometimes that
means hitting up new
classes to stay on top of
her game.
It doesn’t come as a surprise that Holly is a former
hair model. The proof is in
her shinny locks of hair so
full and healthy-looking.
And what does she do
to keep it looking that
way? Not much, actually.
“I just do your average
wash it, blow dry it and
away you go,” Holly says,
adding daily oil treatments
go a long way, especially as
it starts getting hot.
The oil helps protect
the hair from damage, she
says.
Holly says oil treatments are quick and easy
there’s no excuse to not do
them – even for men.
According to the hair
stylist, taking care of one’s
hair is not a gender role.
Men can exercise similar
hair care routines as
women to keep their hair
looking its best.
And a lot of men are.
“I do a lot of men’s hair,”
Holly says, adding 50 per
cent of her clientele are
men.
When this year’s spring
collection came out, Holly
was surprised to learn purple and grey hair colours
dominated it.
That women are voluntarily choosing to go grey
is very empowering and
Holly is not surprised her
younger clientele are asking for her to colour their
hair grey.
“Its refreshing and new
and very exciting,” she
says.
“Gone are the days
when we were trying to
look like we are 23 until we
are 75.”

thing else. For many, they
are permanent parts of life
and cortisol levels remain
at chronic high levels.
Sustained high levels of
cortisol severely compromise our immune system;
it weakens it. Cortisol, produced during heightened
fear and anxiety, blocks the
production of T-cells (an
important part of our immune response) and it
makes us highly susceptible to disease and infection. As a result, we’re less
healthy and we get sick.
The longer this goes on,
the more complicated our
sickness becomes because
the weakened immunity
creates a domino effect.
Do poor people, people
suffering economic hardship, and people in trying
work or personal situations get sick more often?
Do they have more health
issues? Yes, they
do. To the extent that they
feel the constant pressure
of a stressful life
they account
for a very high
percentage of
people who
visit their Doctor. According to a recent
report by First Command
Financial Services, thirtyfive percent of middle class
Americans said they or
someone in their household has experienced a
physical symptom of stress
related to the economy.
What can we do about
it? How can we reduce
chronically high levels of
cortisol? The research says
we need to get daily exercise, reduce sugar and
starch intake, and eat more
colorful fruit and vegetables. Relief also comes
when we opt for a simpler
life, live within our means,
eliminate expenses, get rid
of stuff we don’t need, and
meditate or quiet our mind
for 15 or 20 minutes each
day. Strive to reduce your
stress and live well between
your ears.

Joyce Gurnsey can be
down by 100 points with
one minute left in the
game, yet she’ll manage to
score a bingo and win it
all. In Scrabble a bingo is
when a person plays all
seven letters. For most
players it’s a rare feat to
conquer but for Joyce it
comes easy. The Moose Jaw Scrabble Club was started in
1982 by Dorothy Evans, a
well-known go-getter.
“She got everybody involved. We used to have
tournaments and people
from the prairie provinces
would attend,” said
Gurnsey who has been a
club member for over 20
years. The first Moose Jaw
Scrabble tournament was
in 1986, but with members
dwindling over the years,
the last tournament was in
2011. It was the 25th annual tournament. With the
rise of technology, members were preferring to
play Scrabble on a computer than against a real
person. “Attendance had lowered because our members
are getting old and people
are now playing online.”
That’s how Sherry
Miller started playing before she joined the club.
Recently she moved to
Moose Jaw from Min-
neapolis., Minn. because
she married a local.
Before they got married
they would play online but
now the two play three
games together a day. Her
husband Bob has been
part of the club for a year,
and she joined because it’s
a nice activity to do with
her husband and a way to
meet friends. “It also keeps your mind
active,” said Miller. The Scrabble Club
meets every Friday at 1
p.m. at the Cosmo Senior
Citizen’s Centre. But don’t
let the location fool you.
Anyone over the age of 16

You've earned your place
in Heaven Dad
After all that you've been
through
We wish we could have
helped you more
But there was nothing we
could do
Peacefully sleeping now
out of pain
We would not wake you up
to suffer again.
Loving You, Missing You
Forever in our hearts.
Missed and remembered

Remembering him with a
smile today
And smiling through our tears
Reflect on the many
memories
Of all those happy years.
Recall to mind the way he
spoke
And all the things he said
The good advice he'd give us
His eyes that shone with
laughter
So much of him that never
dies
But lives on ever after.
He was a man of honesty,
integrity and prIde
Important, then, the way he
lived
Not the way he died.
God has you in his arms
We have you in our hearts.

I would recommend
the Smokers’ Helpline.
I contacted the Smokers’ Helpline because I had tried the patch,
willpower, voodoo, magic, whatever you call it, I tried everything and
I’d quit unsuccessfully twelve times. I phoned and met some really
wonderful people that are very good at their job. I was surprised by
how it helped.
I would recommend the Smokers’ Helpline service
to anybody that wants to quit smoking.

[WAY BACK WEDNESDAY]
Oshuk Sentenced To Be Hanged on April 26
Prisoner Appears to be Unperturbed by Judgment of Court
“The sentence of the Court
is that you be taken back
to the place from whence
you came, Regina jail, and
there incarcerated until
Thursday, the-26th day of
April when you will be
taken froth and hanged by
the neck until you are dead
and may a merciful God
have mercy on your soul.”
In the foregoing words
His Lordship Chief Justice
J.T. Brown sentence Alex
Oshuk, 31 years of age, naturalized Canadian citizen
for the murder of Dr.
William W. Brown by
shooting on October 3rd
last.
Not by any visible sign
did Oshuk show that he
was perturbed by the
judgement of the Court,
and that he was not downcast was demonstrated by
the fact that as he was
being taken from the
Court he turned and
waved his hat to some
friends in the rear of the
room.
Nothing To Say
Addressing the accused,
who was found guilty by a
jury on Tuesday last and
remanded for sentence
until Thursday morning,
His Lordship after Walter
Mills, K.C., counsel for the
accused had intimated
that he had nothing to say,
ordered Oshuk to stand
up.
Addressing him, and
speaking under stress of
emotion, Chief Justice
Brown said: “Oshuk, you
have been charged with
the crime of murder, the
most serious crime in the
calendar, and after what I
consider has been a very
fair trial in which you were
very ably defended, and in
which everything possible
was said to your favor, a
jury of twelve of your fellow citizens have found
you guilty.
“In such a case there is
only one thing I can do,
and only one sentence is
possible under the last,
[QUOTED]
Crowd Gathers To Witness Final Scene
of Dramatic Trial of Alex Oshuk For The
Murder of Dr. William Brown On October Third Last
— Moose Jaw Evening Times, Jan. 19, 1928
and that is a sentence of
death.”
His lordship went on to
inform the accused that
the sentence could only be
altered by the GovernorGeneral to Council, and
that the door was wide
open for him or his counsel to make such an appeal
which no doubt would receive every consideration.
“I don’t think it would
be fair to you if I said anything to give you false
hopes of a change in the
sentence,” went on the
Chief Justice, “and my advice to you is that you take

Court Crowded
From the hour of 8:30 o’clock members of the general public commenced to
gather in the Court House
in order to obtain admis-
sion to the room in which
the last scenes of this dramatic trial were enacted.
Every inch of space was
occupied by individuals of
both sexes, for there were
many of the fair sex present; the seats were all
filled, the passageways in
the room were thronged,
and the corridors were
filled to overflowing, while
several men had taken up
positions on the window
ledges in the main corridor
from which vantage they
could see the accused in
the dock, over the heads of
those who filled the doorway.
A few minutes before
ten o’clock Oshuk was escorted into the prisoners
deck where he took his
seat gazing interestedly
around the crowded
Court. He was as on Tuesday at his trial, clean
shaven, with his hair
neatly brushed back from
his forehead. On this occasion he wore a light colored overcoat. Oshuk
appeared to have passed a
sleepless night as his eyes
looked tired, but otherwise
he was the same calm individual who sat through the
trial without showing any
visible signs of emotion or
distress.
As the hour of ten o’clock approached and
W.M. Rese, K.C., Crowns
Attorney, who conducted
the case for the prosecution together with Walter
Mills, K.C. who legally represented the accused, took
their places, hush spread
over the Court.
