HISTORIANS OFTEN CONSIDER NATHAN HALE AMERICA’S FIRST SPY. During
the American Revolution, Nathan Hale engaged in intelligence-gathering missions
against the British before he was captured and sentenced to death. The plaque
erected by the Daughters of the American Revolution on the side of the Clubhouse
marks the site where Hale most likely died. We salute this extraordinary sacrifice,
as well as the sacrifices of all men and women who serve their country.
As Memorial Day approaches and the world commemorates the 100th Anniversary
of WWI, take a moment to pause over some of the Club’s most evocative
memorabilia: the plaques and portraits hanging outside the Main Lounge, which
immortalize Yalies who have served their country, in infancy, at the turn of the
20th century, and today.

Louis C. Tiffany Stained Glass Walking Tour
Saturday, May 3, 10:30 am
Louis Comfort Tiffany, one of the most prolific designers of the late 1800s,
was particularly known for his work in stained glass. The memorial windows
he designed for the churches of Brooklyn Heights have left us with the largest
concentration of Tiffany glass in the world in their original settings. Join us on
this walk, as we visit some of these churches and discuss the symbolism and
technique used by Tiffany as well as the history of the Heights. Please make your
reservation in advance for $25 each using the Club’s online calendar as spaces
are limited.
Performance by the Yale
Symphony Orchestra
Thursday, May 15, 8:00 pm
The Yale Symphony Orchestra returns
to The Yale Club of New York City!
Join fellow members and alums for
a very special spring performance
by the YSO. Nearly half a century
since its founding in 1965, the YSO
is one of the premier undergraduate
orchestras in the United States.
There will be a prix-fixe dinner before
the concert at 6:00 pm for $45 per
person, exclusive of beverages, tax,
and gratuity. Members who join us
for dinner will receive complimentary
admission to the concert. Those who
wish to attend only the concert may
reserve space for $10 per person.
Please make your reservation
using the Club’s online calendar by
Tuesday, May 13.
ANNUAL SUMMER
ROOFTOP PARTIES:
FROM THEN TO NOW
As The Yale Club prepares for its centennial at 50 Vanderbilt,
join us this summer on the Roof to kick-off the celebrations
with themes that remember some of the best times in Club
history. Enjoy themed hors d’oeuvres, a chit bar, and live
music from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm.
2014 THEMES:
May 28: Delightful, Delicious, De-Lovely.
Celebrate 1915. Think jazz-age martinis, plenty of glamour,
and lots of glitz, as we commemorate those first two decades.
Enjoy speakeasy fare and prohibition cocktails, as you watch
the New York sunset from Floor 22.
June 25: Mod 60s.
Celebrate 1965. Fifty years after our Clubhouse was built at
44th and Vanderbilt, the sixties arrived. These were the bands:
the Stones, the Kinks, the Who, the Yardbirds. Their game?
A new style often heard blasting from Clubs around town.
Sip drinks and enjoy bite-sized snacks to commemorate this
wild decade.
July 30: Madonna, Madonna, Madonna.
Celebrate the 80s. Madonna and Whitney are topping the
charts. Michael, too. They’re reinventing pop culture. Join
us as we reprise the 80s on our Rooftop Terrace with drink
specials and hors d’oeuvres for those who are hungry like the
wolf. This is the last party of 2014—be there—before another
one bites the dust.
Tour of Richard Meier Model Museum
Friday, May 16, 1:00 pm
Richard Meier is one of today’s most celebrated architects. He
won the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 1984 and is known for
designing the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art and the
Getty Center in Los Angeles, among many other works. Richard
Meier’s 150-plus model collection, recently installed at Mana
Contemporary in Jersey City, spans the architect’s entire
career, going back to the 1965 Smith House, one of the early
projects which established his reputation. Highlights of the
model museum include large-scale study models of the Getty
Center in Los Angeles. Please make your reservation using the
online calendar for $20 per person. Space is limited.

W I N E of the month:
Caymus Vineyards
In 1971, Charles Wagner and his wife, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner, asked their son if
he would be interested in joining them to start a winery. If he declined the offer,
the family had plans to sell their Napa Valley land and move to Australia, and
Caymus Vineyards would have never existed. Today, Caymus produces some of
world’s best Cabernet Sauvignon, and as the Wagner family has grown, so too
have their wines. They now produce Mer Soleil, a stunning Chardonnay; Belle Glos,
a bold Pinot Noir; and Emmolo, a crisp and sophisticated Sauvignon Blanc. Enjoy
each of these wines by the glass in our dining rooms throughout May.

CELEBRATE MOTHER’S DAY AT THE CLUB
Prosecco and Pudding Tasting with
MOTHER’S DAY
Altaneve and Magnolia Bakery
Thursday, May 8, 6:30 pm
BRUNCH
What better way to celebrate Mother’s Day
than a tasting of a very special, boutique
Prosecco and one of New York City’s
favorite bakeries? Altaneve originates
from Valdobbiadene, the Italian town
reputed for producing the highest
quality sparkling wine. Due to the steep
terrain, grape clusters are hand-picked
and hand-selected, one-by-one. This
harvesting method results in a wine
with unique, floral aromas and delicate
elegance. This delicious wine will be
paired with an assortment of puddings
and cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery.
Magnolia began in 1996, and today it
is one of New York’s most celebrated
bakeries. Reserve your spot for $30
per person, or make it a date with your
mother for $50 for two, using our online
calendar.

Barbara Perry on Rose Kennedy: The Life and Times of a
Political Matriarch
Wednesday, May 7, 6:30 pm | What better way to
celebrate Mother’s Day than with Rose Kennedy,
matriarch to America’s favorite political family? In
her new book, Barbara Perry paints an intimate
portrait of Rose Kennedy, who blended her Catholic
motherhood, Victorian perfectionism, and political
DNA into a dazzling dynasty. Perry’s work examines
Rose Kennedy’s private doubts, fears, and search
for solace amidst crushing tragedies. The lecture will
weave together compelling photos and videos of this
extraordinary woman who simultaneously lived one of
the grandest and saddest lives of our time. Barbara
A. Perry is Co-Chair of the Presidential Oral History
Program at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center,
where she directs the Edward M. Kennedy Oral
History Project. She will join members for a short
reception at 6:30 pm, followed by her talk. Books
will be available for purchase and signing after the
lecture—just in time for Mother’s Day!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT John Musto ’91
How many years
have you been
coming to The Yale
Club?
Do you have a
favorite painting or
work of art at the
Club?
What is your
proudest
accomplishment as
president?
I’ve been coming to the Club
since I was about 8 years old.
I would come here because
my dad was a member—he
was a professor at Yale. He
would take me into the city
and we would stay at the
Club together.
I’m from New Haven
originally, so I love all of the
artwork that depicts Yale and
New Haven. I especially love
the works that have scenes
of East Rock because that’s
where I grew up.
My proudest accomplishment
is the Tap Room. I think it
will stand the test of time
and in 30 years it will be
considered one of the great
rooms of the Club. I am
pleased that it opened on
time and on budget. It is
just a spectacularly beautiful
room. I will also say that I
am honored by the people
we brought into leadership
positions. The Club has
never been in such good
hands as it is today. I’m
also tremendously proud of
the financial performance
of the Club. With all of the
things we’ve done and the
challenges we’ve faced, we’ve
continued to have strong
financial performance and
we’ve built a good foundation
for the future.
Describe your
oldest memory at
the Club.
I got a kick out of having
lunches here and seeing all
of the businessmen when I
was younger. One time, my
brother and I decided to try to
get them to notice us, so we
started talking about different
stocks. We would shout,
“Exxon just crashed!” We
had fun attempting to scare
them into thinking that there
was something going on. And
they listened to us.
What is your
favorite secret about
the Club?
My favorite secret about
the Club is the basement
entrance into Grand Central
that is kept locked up. I wish
the President were given a
special key to use. He is not.
What changes
do you anticipate
happening at the
Club?
I think the Club will continue
to become more diverse.
We’re doing the right things
and making the right changes
detailed in the Master Plan
to ensure that the Club will
be as great a place in 100
years as it is today. I hope
we always serve great food;
I hope our guest rooms are
always as beautiful as they
are today; I hope the staff is
always just as welcoming and
friendly.
John Musto ’91 is The Yale Club’s outgoing president. He is an avid squash player and recently
competed in an international tournament in Italy, where he won first place.

THE BENEFITS OF A MASSAGE
You probably already know that massages reduce stress and aid in relaxation, but massages have many other health benefits as well.
Did you know that massages help to improve posture and reduce blood pressure? Or that they enhance athletic performance and assist
in the movement of lymph fluids and blood circulation? They can even strengthen your immune system and the health of your skin.
The Yale Club has a comprehensive massage program. We employ four talented therapists: Raul, Ron, Sebastian, and Mirlande, available
by appointment throughout the week, and we recently added a state-of-the-art memory foam table.
We offer an assortment of services including:
SWEDISH MASSAGE:
These massages
are gentle and
relaxing. Therapists
use long, smooth
strokes to knead
superficial layers of
muscle with lotion
or oil.
THERAPEUTIC
MASSAGE:
Focusing on
rehabilitation and
recovery, therapists
manipulate soft
tissue to alleviate
pain, discomfort,
and muscle spasm.
DEEP TISSUE:
Using slower
strokes or friction
techniques, deep
tissue targets
deeper layers
of muscle and
connective tissue.
SPORTS MASSAGE:
Specifically
designed for people
who are involved in
physical activity,
the focus is on
preventing injury
and enhancing
performance.
SHIATSU MASSAGE:
Shiatsu is a form of
Japanese bodywork
that uses localized
finger pressure in
rhythmic sequence
on acupuncture
meridians.
PRENATAL MASSAGE:
Certified massage
therapists help
to reduce stress,
decrease swelling,
relieve aches, and
reduce anxiety and
depression caused
by pregnancy.
Schedule an appointment: Please visit www.yaleclubnyc.org/massage or call 212-716-2127, to make your reservations with one of our
talented massage therapists. Appointments may also be booked in person with an attendant on the fifth floor. Please note that not all
therapists perform all services.

D. Eisenhower called the operation
a crusade in which “we will accept
nothing less than full victory.” More
than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft
supported the D-Day invasion, and by
day’s end, the Allies gained a foothold
against Nazi Germany. To commemorate
this historic date, Professor Paul
Kennedy will join members for a

employed to deliver victory. The
