2004 UCLA BRUINS SOFTBALL CONTACT: Amy Hughes • 310/206-8123 • [email protected] THIS WEEK: TUESDAY (3/30): UCLA 4, Cal State Fullerton 3 (Easton Stadium) FRIDAY (4/2): 7 pm (MST) at #RV/23 Arizona State • Tempe, AZ SATURDAY (4/3): 7 pm (MST) vs. #1/1 Arizona • Tucson, AZ SUNDAY (4/4): 1 pm (MST*) vs.#1/1 Arizona • Tucson, AZ • CSTV Live Broadcast *-Daylight Savings Time begins Saturday night. There is a one-hour time change to Pacific Time for Friday and Saturday’s game, but not Sunday’s game as Arizona does not observe Daylight Savings Time. Following a 13-day break from competition for winter quarter final exams, UCLA returned to the diamond on Sunday for an exhibition game against the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team, falling 11-0 in five innings. UCLA’s collegiate schedule resumed on Tuesday afternoon with a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Cal State Fullerton. The Bruins will now travel to Arizona to open Pac-10 play with a single game on Friday night at Arizona State’s Farrington Stadium before driving to Tucson, AZ, for Saturday and Sunday showdowns with top-ranked Arizona. Sunday’s game between the Bruins and Wildcats will be broadcast live on CSTV. Former UCLA great Stacey Nuveman will provide color commentary on the broadcast. BRUINS COME FROM BEHIND TO DEFEAT CAL STATE FULLERTON, 4-3 After giving up three unearned runs in the top of the second inning on Tuesday afternoon at Easton Stadium, the Bruins capitalized on a two-run home run by Emily Zaplatosch, her first since the UNLV Classic on Feb. 13, and a solo home run by Stephanie Ramos to tie the game at 3-3 by the end of the fourth inning. While Lisa Dodd was retiring 14 of the final 16 batters she faced in the game, it took the UCLA offense until the bottom of the seventh inning to push across the fourth and deciding run. The game-winning rally started with back-to-back one-out walks by Zaplatosch and Dodd, followed by a single from designated player Kristen Dedmon to load the bases. UCLA freshman left fielder Tara Henry was then able to chop a slap-hit single over the third baseman’s head to provide her second hit of the day and score the gamewinning run, as pinch-runner Alissa Eno scored easily on the play. UCLA BECOMES 25TH VICTIM FOR U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM The 2004 U.S. Olympic Team closed out its “Aiming for Athens” college tour on Sunday afternoon in front of a sell-out crowd of 943 fans at UCLA’s Easton Stadium , posting an 11-0 five-inning victory over second-ranked UCLA. All five former Bruins on Team USA’s roster played in the game, including the first tour appearance by NCAA career home run and slugging percentage record holder Stacey Nuveman as a pinch-hitter, and a one-hit shutout tossed by two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and four-time Bruin AllAmerican Lisa Fernandez. Fernandez allowed just one Bruin hit and two baserunners in the game, while going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored in the contest. Tairia (Mims) Flowers (C, 0-for-0, 3 walks), Natasha Watley (SS, 1-for-3, 2 runs scored) and Amanda Freed (1-for-3, 1 run scored) also started for Team USA on Sunday. For the Bruins, Keira Goerl pitched well through two innings before UCLA faltered as a team on defense in the third inning, allowing eight runs. Goerl struck out six batters in the game, including Watley, Nuveman, Freed and Fernandez. The only Bruin hit of the day came with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning as sophomore catcher Emily Zaplatosch was able to beat out a throw from Watley on a slow-hopping ground ball. She is the NCAA’s active victories leader with a record of 114-14 (.890), and is currently tied for 10th on the NCAA’s all-time list. Her current career winning percentage would rank fourth on the NCAA’s all-time list, topping former UCLA greats such as Lisa Longaker (.881), Tracy Compton (.878), Amanda Freed (.829), Debbie Doom (.820), along with Arizona graduate and current U.S. Olympian Jennie Finch (.881). The NCAA career record of 151 wins (Courtney Blades, 1997-2000) is most likely out of Goerl’s reach, but 120 wins would land her in the NCAA’s all-time top-five. Goerl was named the Pac-10’s Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 17 after going 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA in wins over No. 8 Michigan, No. 9 Nebraska and Wisconsin. Goerl no-hit Wisconsin on Feb. 14, her 10th career no-hitter and the 89th no-hitter in program history. For the week, she struck out 20, walked four, and allowed one unearned run while holding opposing batters to a .161 batting average at the UNLV Classic. FOUR BRUINS ON USA SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST ASA/USA Softball announced its initial watch list for the third annual USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award on Feb. 5. Four Bruins, seniors Keira Goerl and Claire Sua and sophomores Caitlin Benyi and Emily Zaplatosch, are on the 40-player list. Former UCLA great Stacey Nuveman won the inaugural award following the 2002 season. This award, which is considered the Heisman Trophy in women’s collegiate softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. ENQUIST IS NCAA DIVISION I’S WINNINGEST COACH The 2004 season marks Sue Enquist’s 16th campaign as head coach of the Bruin softball program. It is her 25th year as part of UCLA’s softball coaching staff and her 29th year of involvement with the program as either a coach or player. Enquist has a 777-138-1 (.849) coaching record, the highest winning percentage for an active NCAA Division I head coach, and 1,204 wins in her Bruin softball career as a player, assistant coach and head coach, combined. As a player from 1975-78, Enquist became UCLA’s first All-American while establishing the Bruin career batting average record of .401. She was the only UCLA player to complete her career with a batting average over .400 until Stacey Nuveman completed her senior year in 2002 (with a .466 average), a span of 24 years. BRUINS BASHING HOME RUNS AT RECORD PACE Through the first 28 games of the 2004 season, UCLA has crushed 46 home runs as a team, led by eight from sophomore leadoff hitter Caitlin Benyi and six from Stephanie Ramos . The UCLA single-season record for team home runs is 95 (1.377/game) , set by UCLA’s 1999 NCAA Championship team that was led by NCAA career home run record holder Stacey Nuveman’s 31. That 1999 UCLA team had 32 home runs through its first 21 games, and recorded 83 home runs through its 61-game regular season, hitting the final 12 during eight games of postseason play. This year’s Bruins are on pace to hit 86 home runs for a 49-game regular season (1.643/game). This season, UCLA has homered in 23 of its 28 games thus far. Breaking it down, UCLA has five homer-less game games, 10 games with one home run, eight games with two home runs, two game with three home runs, two with four home runs, and one game with a school-record six home runs. The 1999 Bruins had 17 homerless games, 25 one-HR games, 17 two-HR games, five three-home run games, four games with four HRs and one game with five home runs. As UCLA’s first hitter of the game, she has a .500 batting average (9-for-18) through the team’s first 28 games with eight walks and a hit-by-pitch for a .667 on-base percentage. She has also reached on an error in one game, which means she has run the bases to start UCLA’s first offensive inning in 19 of the team’s 28 games, including three lead-off home runs (against Wisconsin, Tennessee, Oregon State 3/14). STEPHANIE RAMOS NAMED PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Ramos, from Elk Grove, Calif., hit .800 for the week at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, going 8-for-10 with four runs scored, a double, three home runs, six RBI, a 1.800 slugging percentage and .750 on-base percentage. Her totals for hits, HR, RBI, SLG% and OB% led the team for the weekend as the Bruins improved to 16-0 on the year. In UCLA’s first game of the weekend against UCSB, Ramos went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. In the second game of the day, she doubled in her first at-bat of the game, then homered in consecutive at-bats in the third and fifth innings before finishing her day at the plate with a walk in the sixth inning. In that game, she finished with a 3-for-3 day with two runs scored, three RBI and a walk. On Sunday, Ramos went 3-for-4 with a home run, her fifth of the season, and two singles. For the season, Ramos is UCLA’s top hitter with a .452 batting average (38-for-84) with six doubles, nine home runs, 24 RBIs and 25 runs scored. The Bruins totalled six home runs in the game, including a two-home run contest by sophomore catcher Emily Zaplatosch. Home runs were hit by Caitlin Benyi, Andrea Duran, Zaplatosch, Jodie Legaspi and Lisa Dodd. Zaplatosch recorded a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning and a two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth, recording five RBIs in the game. Two home runs in a single game ties UCLA’s single-game record, while five RBIs ties for fifth-best in Bruin history since the start of the 1997 season. Zaplatosch went on to hit a third home run on the day with a sixth inning two-run home run against then-No. 13 DePaul. The following day, sophomore Caitlin Benyi duplicated Zaplatosch’s single-game feat, hitting a lead-off home run against Wisconsin and following with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Benyi also recorded the game-ending hit in the bottom of the fifth inning, pushing UCLA’s eighth run across the plate to invoke the mercy rule as the Bruins won 8-0 in five innings. As a team, seven Bruins combined for 12 home runs during the team’s five games at the UNLV Classic. LISA DODD FEATURED IN SPORTS ILLUSTRATED ON CAMPUS UCLA freshman P/2B Lisa Dodd was featured in the inaugural issue of Sports Illustrated On Campus as one of the magazine’s Freshman 15, a “Faces in the Crowd” feature. The March 25 issue of the magazine (page 13) included a follow-up story on the Freshman 15, focusing on Dodd. Dodd has started 27 of UCLA’s 28 games this season, missing one game at the Palm Springs Classic after taking a ground ball to the mouth while playing second base against Northwestern. She has two grand slams this season, one against Baylor at the UNLV Classic and one against UCSB in the first game of UCLA’s doubleheader with the Gauchos at Easton Stadium on Feb. 28. She has pitched 12 games for the Bruins, all complete games with eight shutouts, and has struck out 60 batters while walking just seven in her 80.2 innings in the circle. She has a 11-1 record in the circle and offensively she has four home runs and three doubles among her 19 hits on the season. FRESHMAN JODIE LEGASPI TAKES OVER SHORTSTOP POSITION Freshman Jodie Legaspi had enormous shoes to fill defensively this season, as she became the first player other than U.S. Olympian Natasha Watley to field the position of shortstop for UCLA since early in the 2000 season. Since a particularly rocky weekend at the Palm Springs Classic in Cathedral City, CA, Legaspi has rebounded admirably, posting a .980 fielding percentage with 14 putouts, 34 assists and just one error.
