SYRIAN GOVERNMENT
BACKGROUND INFORMATI ON
The Syrian government
is a country that was
founded in 1920, on
October 3rd and used to
be under French
control/occupation until 1946. With a series of
coups and coup attempts from 1946 till 1971,
the country had no real stability until Hafez AlAssad started to seize control in 1970-1971.
The Syrian government is controlled by a small
Alawite group; who are minorities in the
country. Syria has a diverse populous which
consists out of Sunni (70%) and Shia/Alawites
(12) Muslims, Kurds (7-10%), Turkmen,
Assyrian and Druze communities. There was a
strong sectarian division between these groups
and it is one of the reasons why and how certain
militias are formed.
LEADERSHIP
Bashar Al- Assad:
President of Syria and
currently the highest
authority in the Syrian
government. In addition
to this, the president also functions as the
commander-in-chief of the Syrian armed
forces.
IDEOLOGY & GOALS


The ones in power within the Syrian
government are virtually all Alawites.
The goal of the Syrian government is to
once more, reunite Syria under their
control.
RESOURCES


The Syrian Armed Forces has lost many
soldiers during the civil war, either due
to defection or death.
Possession and usage of chlorine based
chemical weapons.
Active frontline personnel: 180,000 (Army, Navy
and Air Force) Total forces with the aid of other
groups such as Hezbollah, Iranian forces, and
military police is unknown.
