The Saceship Trip
Imagine that Anjali and Binay
who are on a visit to the US, take
a trip on a spaceship that is
equipped with an automatic
camera. It takes photographs of
Earth from the following
heights: 1 m, 10 m, 100 m, 1 km
(1,000 m), and so on. Each
photograph is taken from a
position that is lO.times higher
than the previous one (instead
of two times higher, as in the
balloon ride).
\ Shown above, is the first photograph, taken while the spaceship was in its
j position for takeoff. The camera lens is exactly 1 m above the ground and directly over
i a man who is peacefully sleeping on a blanket in a park.
'•
1. The ship rises to a final height of 1,00,00,00,000 km (10,00,00,00,00,000 m) above its
starting point.
a. Finish the following description in arrow language for the entire trip:
.
x to ,n ^ x to
l m••* turn* ?
b.How many arrows are in your completed diagram?
c.How could you have predicted the number of arrows needed to complete
the diagram?
As you can. see. from jthe pattern in the arrow string you just completed, every time you
multiply a whole number by 10, one zero i^ added to the number.
Example: 9,48,566 -^-^L 94,85,660 -^^> 9,48,56,600
However, when you multiply a decimal by 10, the result is somewhat different.
4. Copy and complete the following arrow strings using your calculator:
a or X 10^
?
X 10., ?
X 10 ^
fa. 4.875 ^^? -^T~?~"
5.What are the similarities and differences between multiplying a whole number by JO
and multiplying a decimal by 10?
The problem 3,45,982 X1OQ > 3,45,98,200 results in the same answer as
3,45,982^-^-34,59,820^-^-3,45,98,200.
6.Find the product of 5.65 x 1,000 by writing an arrow string with "x 10" over
each arrow.
7.Calculate the following without using a calculator:
a.1,000 x 10 x 10
b.1,000 x 1,000
c.1,000 x 1,000 x 100 x 100
d.1,000 x 1,00,000
e.10,00,000 x 10,00,000
f.6.37 x 100
g.98.235 x 1,00,000
h. 0.57892 x 1,000
i. 65.003 x 1.0,000
8. a. Use numbers such as 10, 100, 1,000, and so on, to write five different
multiplication problems for which the answer is 10,00,000.
b. Write five more multiplication problems similar to those in part a, but for which
the answer is 22,70,000.

b.How many thousands are there in ten crores?
c.How many hundreds are there in one crore?
10.For the following problems, write your answers using words:
a.one lakh times ten
b.one hundred times one hundred
c.one thousand times one thousand
The next group of numbers after arabs has a new name — kharab. One kharab is
1,00,00,00,00,000.
11.a. How many times must you multiply 1,000 by 10 to get ten crores?
b. What single number must 1,000 be multiplied by in order to get ten lakhs?
12.Write one lakh crores as a numeral.
Numbers like the ones you have been looking at (numbers made up of a 1 followed by
zeros) are called powers of 10. For powers of 10, you can find the number of times that
you multiply 1 by 10 by counting the number of zeros.
There are five zeros in 1,00,000, and it takes five multiplications by 10 — starting from
1 — to get a result of 1,00,000.
100
1,000-^^ 10,000
1,00,000
To save time writing and counting all the zeros in powers of 10, you can use a special
notation. Using exponential notation, 1,00,000 can be written as 105, and 1,00,00,000 can
be written as 107.
Exponential Notation
Example A: 1,00,000
x In. ,
,_
/ inv
inv
in'-- 1,00,000
I ^J
io
. 100- -Ioj
-. 1,000
-> 10,000 - -
so 1,00,000 = 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x [0 which can be wiitten as 10'1
Example B: 1,00,00,000
..
^,1,00,00,000= 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10= 107
13. Why do you think 1,00,000 is written as 10s and 1,00,00,000 is written as 107 in
exponential notation?
In 105 and 107, the 10 is called the base, and the 5 and 7 are called the exponents.
14. Write the following numbers in exponential notation:
a. 1,000b. 1,00,00,00,000
c. 10,00,00,00,000
15.Write out each of these exponential numbers as numerals.
a. 104b. 101c. 106
Numbers with bases other than 10 can also be written with exponents.
For example, 2x2x2x2 = 24. For 24, the base is 2, and the exponent is 4.
Also, 3x3x3x3x3 can be written as 35.
16.a. What is the base in 3s?
b. What is the exponent in 35?
c. Calculate 24.
d. Calculate 35.e. Calculate 53.
17.Calculate a-c below and write the answer in exponential form.
a. 104 x 10b. 108 x 100c. 10n x 1,000
d. What happens to the exponent of a power of 10 each time you multiply by 10?
18.Calculate the following and write the answer in exponential form:
a. 106 x 102b. 106 x 103c. 108 x 103
d. 103 x 108e. 104 x 103 x 103

Why or why not?
27.How much bigger is a hundred crores than ten lakhs?

BIOLOGY
MAKE A MODEL REPRESENTING VARIOUS PARTS OF PLANTS (ROOT SYSTEMS, SHOOT
• SYSTEM )
The students shall be able to gain knowledge about the various parts of the plants.
GUIDELINES
Make a model representing various parts of plant i.e. roots, stem, leaves, seeds, fruit and flower.
The model should be preferably made by using 'best out of waste'.
Use your own original and creative ideas.
2.
WRITE A JINGLE ON JUNK FOOD
We all love Junk food as its yummy!! But do you know that junk food is basically a term used
for food containing high levels of calories from sugar or fat with little protein, vitamins or minerals. Junk
food has little "nutritional value" and contains excessive fat, sugar, salt, and calories , for example, too
much unhealthy saturated fat, many burger outlets, fried chicken outlets and the like supply food considered
junk food.
Despite being labelled as "junk," such foods usually do not pose any immediate health concerns and are
generally safe when integrated into a well balanced diet. However, concerns about the negative health
effects resulting from the consumption of a "junk food"-heavy diet have resulted in public health awareness
campaigns, and restrictions on advertising and sale in several countries.
Guidelines
Write a jingle to create awareness about the negative health effects of 'Junk Food'.
It should be original and creative.
Use appropriate vocabulary.
