The street-corner property at 2527 San Pablo Avenue houses a former, c1960 service
(i.e., gas plus repair) station building that was used as an auto repair garage after
1979 and that is presently vacant. The property is asphalt paved with a concrete pad
beneath its projecting canopy and a pole-mounted street corner sign (added in 1979).
The 1-story structure is a slightly asymmetrical T-shape in plan with the front canopy

Description (continued):
Raised on a concrete pad, the service station building is metal framed with
metal exterior walls, generous and fixed metal sash windows across the front
(west) and wrapping the southwest corner, two wood entry doors at the front,
and a flat roof. Architectural features include a continuous canted fascia at
the canopy and overhanging roof, lally columns supporting the service canopy,
a horizontally folded-metal transom panel atop the glazed office wall at the
building’s southwest corner, and a set of 4 posts supporting the roof
overhang at the building’s southeast corner.
The vehicular bays are accessed from two (non-original) overhead doors at the
north side. A small service structure sits at the back of the property. Based
on permit records, that structure was added after 1979.

Description (continued):
Sanborn maps document that a previous service station structure stood on this
site was removed and replaced from c1930 to pc1960 (see p.3). At that time,
the overall site was substantially reconfigured, including both the removal
and addition of adjoining buildings. (cont.)
2527 San Pablo Ave. (arrows) – 1950 (at left) & 1980 Sanborn (right) maps
(from Stellar Site Assessment – north is up)
Based on directory listings, the prior service station had numerous
independent operators until c1950 and was thereafter a Richfield service
station. In 1959, it was first identified as the Willie Williams Richfield
Station, and which remained in operation into the late-1970s, when the gas
station use was ended and the property converted to auto repair. The property
was also sold in 1979 by Richfield Oil Co. to its most recent owner, Babbitt.
The property and building at 2527 San Pablo Ave. were used as a service
station from c1960 to c1979. At that juncture, the site became a auto repair
business, and by which time its Richfield service station signage and
gasoline service equipment had been removed. No original or early permit
records, drawings or photos have been located. One permit application records
the 1979 change of use. The site and buildings are presently vacant.
The remaining service station structure is a basic and undistinguished Modern
service station building without any identifiable associations of importance.
Consequently, the property and its buildings do not have potential historical
or historic architectural significance.
