First day of school for students - August 7, 2013
Superintendent Scott Paul welcomes students back to school!
Dear Families of the Whitley County School
District:
We hope that your family has had a safe and
enjoyable summer. The 2013-2014 school-year
will mark the 50th Anniversary of Whitley
County High School. During the past 50 years, the
high school has had numerous renovations and
upgrades and thousands of students have walked
its hallways. On Friday September 13th, Whitley
County will host the Alumni Bowl which will
spotlight the 50th Anniversary. On this night, we
will proudly recognize alumni and staff from the
first graduating class along with other former staff
and faculty members. We would like to invite
everyone for an evening of celebration, fun, food
and memories.
Once again, the administration, faculty and staff
have been working throughout the summer to
Every Student. Every School
Day. Free Student Meals.
The Whitley County Board of Education will be
participating in the United States Department of
Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Option (CEO)
during the 2013-2014 school-year.
The CEO option allows the school district to
provide a free breakfast and lunch to all students,
regardless of economic status. All students will
receive two free, nutritious meals each school day.
In order to extend this program beyond the 20132014 school-year, we need our parents
participation in the program.
Parent/Guardian Support
Parents must continue to complete household
and income forms as they have in the past for the
school food service program. The forms are to
be filled out exactly as if the household was
applying for free or reduced lunch.
Parents may also be contacted by their child’s
principal or Family Resource/Youth Service
Coordinator to obtain additional data needed by
the district as we participate in this pilot program.
The participation of our parents and guardians is
essential for the district’s participation in this
program beyond the 2013-2014 school-year.
Many grants and other sources of funding for
instructional resources depend on the data
collected from the household income forms that
have been used to determine free and reduced
lunch eligibility.
Please complete and return the household
income form in a timely manner so the district
can begin data collection.
If you have questions about the Whitley County
Schools food service program, please contact
Sharon Foley at (606) 549-7000, Ext. 2031 or the
cafeteria manager at your child’s school. You may
also visit our website for menus and nutrition

Ready or Not Here I Come!
Bobby Blakley, Principal
[email protected]
I remember those words from my younger days and I also remember yelling, “I’m not ready yet!” which always guaranteed me extra time!
It would be nice if starting school was like that, but we all know that wouldn’t work so yes, ready or not…the new school year has arrived!
For the past few years teachers and students have conformed and adapted to many educational changes. I hope this summer has afforded them time to
rest, to enjoy their family and friends, and to also re-energize their thinking and enthusiasm. We anticipate a busy, prosperous year for our students and
we’re as ready as we’ll ever be! Teachers have attended trainings to learn about new standards, teaching methods, assessments and we are anxious to receive
the results of last year’s state assessment so we can formally gauge our progress.
This year one of our major goals is the improvement of student writing. It is used in every part of the state assessment so it’s important our students learn
to clearly communicate in written forms. We have a few projects planned that will inspire effective and authentic communication. The construction of our
new school, which will soon be underway, will provide several learning opportunities for our students and we are very excited and appreciative of our
district’s endeavor!
Students have been assigned their classes based on several factors and parents should have already received letters from the teachers offering valuable
bits of information. Our open-house is scheduled for August 5th 4:00-6:00PM and I hope everyone attends. Procedures, expectations, student performance and other relevant topics will be discussed. Probably, one of the most valuable benefits of attending open-house is being able to start a trusting
relationship between the home and school. There’s no better way to get the year started off right than with accurate information and familiarity.
We encourage participation in the district’s P.A.V.E. Program (Parents as Volunteer Educators). This program has made a positive impact on our school
family in previous years. Information will be available at open-house or you may call the school. Also, our
P.T.O. is always looking for active membership. Contact Shirley Lawson for more information.
Now, for a few quick reminders:
·
The doors open at 7:00 AM. Students dropped off earlier than 7:00 will not be supervised.
·
Visitors will not be permitted in the building after 8:00 A.M. without prior approval · All visitors
must register at the office.
·
Breakfast is served from 7:00-7:45 AM
·
Our school calendar has a new element this year: Two early release days in October.
·
We continue to offer after school programs: Save the Children and Century 21. Both programs will
begin about mid-September. Information will
be sent home at a later date.

Again, we look forward to seeing you and your family at open-house.

Dear Parents and Students:
Welcome back to school! I hope you have enjoyed your summer and are ready for another year
of learning together. This summer our custodians, faculty and staff have worked hard to update
facilities, refine our curriculum and instructional practices, and enhance our resources to support
all students. Our first day of school is Wednesday, August 7th. Our Open House date has been set
for August 6th from 4 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Below is some basic information to ensure everyone,
parents and students, has a successful school year.
School Hours: The school door opens and supervision of students begins at 7:15 A.M. The bell
rings at 7:45 and class starts at 7:50 A.M. Students are released to go home at 2:30 P.M.
Parent Drop-off Procedures: You are welcome to walk your child to class on the first day, but
keep in mind that traffic is always an issue. Please be careful when coming into or leaving the
parking areas of our school. When dropping off or picking up students, please park along the side
entrance of the building. The loop in front of the building is for buses only from 7:15 to 8:00 A.M.
“Cardinals”
When picking-up students during the school day, we require them to be checked out through the
office. We will call them from class or have them ready if prior arrangements have been made.
Parent Pick-up Procedures: Prior to the end of the school day, visitors must enter the front doors to pick-up students. Visitors must provide
proper identification and be authorized on the emergency form in order to pick-up students. Students will be called to the front office to be picked
up. Only those authorized on the child’s emergency form will be permitted to pick-up students.
Anyone picking-up a student at the end of the school day may enter the side door after 2:00 P.M. to wait in the cafeteria for the student dismissal
bell. Students being picked-up will wait in the gym and be signed-out from the gym into the cafeteria to the person verified to pick-up the student.
Lunch is provided to all students at no charge this year. Students will be able to purchase extra food items if they choose to do so.
How You Can Help at Home: •Talk to your child about school and reinforce that success at school is a priority •Provide a dedicated time and
place for your child to do his/her homework •Ensure your child is on time to school every day and has minimal absences • Read the school
handbook with your child to become familiar with district and school disciplinary policies and school and district protocols • Establish open
communication with your child’s teachers through phone calls, email, text, parent portal, and parent/teacher conferences • Participate in schoolbased activities, such as PTO, PAVE, Family Reading/Math Nights, and Open House events • Access school and district websites for information
(http://www.whitley.kyschools.us/)
Please be an active partner and become engaged in your child’s academic and social growth. Together we can accomplish great things!

Another Summer Break is nearing an end and the staff at the Intermediate School has been working hard this summer planning for
the start of another school year. To kick off another great year, the staff at the Intermediate School would like to invite all of our
students and parents to Open House on Thursday, August 1st, from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity to meet
teachers and staff and build that all important line of communication with your child’s teacher.
There are two great after school programs that students are welcome to take part in. The programs are held Monday thru
Thursday from 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. One program offered is the Save the Children Reading Program. This is an after school reading
program that focuses on activities that make reading fun for students while improving fluency and comprehension. The Save the
Children Reading Program recently added a new aspect to their curriculum called Change. Change focuses on getting students to be
active and live healthier life styles by exercising and making healthy choices in their diet. For more information about the Save the
Children Reading Program stop in and speak with Mrs. Frazier during open house, she is located in fifth grade hall room 410.
Another program offered at Whitley Central Intermediate School is the Cardinal Club. Students are given the opportunity to
“Cardinals”
participate in various club activities. In the past we have offered cooking, aviation, computers, Lego robotics, wilderness survival and
drama. The Cardinal Club is a great way for students to participate in fun and enriching activities that interest them. Applications for
the Cardinal Club will be sent home in late August. Both programs will begin in early September.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our new third grade students and their parents. I would also like to make all the third grade students and parents aware of
the many different extracurricular activities we have to offer. Beginning in August we will have girls’ basketball, football, cheerleading, and academic teams that will get to
represent the school as they compete against the other elementary schools in our district. Boys’ basketball will begin in the fall, followed by soccer in the spring. I hope all of
our students take the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities here at Whitley Central Intermediate.

The beginning of a new school year is always exciting because it holds so many new opportunities and much anticipation for
students and teachers alike. I hope that everyone has had a long, relaxing summer. I have enjoyed seeing and talking with several
students at the different summer programs this year, like 21st Century, RIF, and Comp Care activities on our campus. In addition
to seeing the students at school, I always look forward to seeing our students and families throughout the community.
I am sure that this year is going to be a great year for the Whitley East community. I am very happy to announce that all
students will be receiving a free breakfast and lunch this year, as well as a healthy afternoon snack! One of the new instructional
programs that I am very excited about is the opportunity to have active learning times in the mornings, beginning with the second
week of school. From 7:15 until 7:45, any student may come in early and take AR tests in the library. In addition, computer lab
will be open for students according to a schedule to practice their keyboarding, technology, math, and reading skills with quality
on line learning programs, like Spelling City, Study Island, and morestarfall.com. Students in grades 2, 3 and 4 should be
prepared for more books from the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program. Finally, I am extremely happy to report that the
students K-6 will receive Scholastic News magazines, with interactive access as part of library/media instruction. Students in
Pre-K will receive a Clifford, the Big Red Dog themed news magazine.
It is truly a great time to be a student or staff member at Whitley County East Elementary. Our school has achieved so much;
we want to continue that tradition, and build on it. Yes, it will be a lot of hard work, but anything worth having requires hard
work. Parents, you can help your students achieve by talking with them about the things they are learning in school. Ask them to
tell you specific terms; you will find they are glad to talk about it! We have a wonderful school. I look forward to serving our
community as a school principal, and if I may be of any assistance in my service to the students of this community, please stop
by, my door is always open.

I would like to welcome everyone back for another exciting school year at Whitley County High School. We look forward to providing our
students opportunities to excel and become college and career ready as they progress toward graduation.
We have our Freshman Academy orientation planned for Tuesday, July 30 from 11:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. We hope this will help our
freshman students make a smooth transition from middle school to high school.
Our fall sports teams have been conditioning and practicing in order to get ready for their seasons to begin. The first home football game of
the season will be the Alumni Bowl, which will be held on September 13th at 7:30 p.m. The Colonels will be hosting Rockcastle County.
Some important goals that WCHS has this school year are to continually improve student attendance and to provide opportunities for each
student to become college and/or career ready. Parents, please help us meet our attendance goals by encouraging your child to attend school
regularly. This will ensure that our students perform better academically and do not fall behind in courses. We will have a new Advisor/Advisee
program developed by our counselors instead of a traditional homeroom period this year. This class will meet periodically throughout the year.
Each student will have an academic advisor much like a college student. The purposes of the Advisor/Advisee program are to provide
guidance to students, reduce dropout rates, increase graduation rates, and improve overall student satisfaction with school.
I would like to close by thanking Mr. Paul, Mrs. Trickett and the Whitley County Board of Education for their continued support of our
school. I would also like to thank my assistant principals Amanda Croley, Rachele Rice, and Alan Ysidro for all of their hard work to get this
school year off to a great start. We are all excited and ready to go for the 2013/2014 school year.

Greetings. It’s hard to believe that summer is ending and the new school year is beginning. WCMS is very excited to announce several
new members to our faculty. We would like to welcome our new Guidance Counselor, Ms. Amy Lunsford. The math department would

Bowman. The encore department would like to welcome Ms. Jenny Bowlin. The special education department extends a welcome to
Ms. Erica Roggie, while the reading department welcomes Ms. Ann Wohlfarth.
You may meet all of the faculty and staff of WCMS during Open House on Monday, August 5th, from 4:00-6:00. I would like to take
this opportunity to extend an invitation to all WCMS students and parents and encourage all of you to attend this event. It is a great time
for students and parents to meet the teachers, meet the staff, and tour the building. Refreshments will be served during the Open House.
There are lots of opportunities for students to continue their pursuit of excellence during our afterschool programs. The 21st Century
program offers a wide variety of enrichment programs and allows students to become involved outside of the classroom setting.
Our fall sports teams have been busy preparing for their upcoming seasons. The first football game is scheduled for August 15th versus
Knox County and will played at the WCMS football field. The girls basketball team will have their first game on August 2nd at Lincoln
County. As you know, we have a winning tradition here at WCMS and look forward to continued success on the field and off.
As this school year gets underway, please know that you may contact me at any time with questions or concerns. I look forward to

child at Oak Grove Elementary. Our students are our top priority. The Oak Grove front office staff, teachers, instructional
assistants, cafeteria staff and custodians have worked extremely hard to get ready for our best year ever!
I wanted to remind everyone that Oak Grove will be implementing a new parent pick-up procedure this year and it will start
the first day of school. The change was made to make our procedure more convenient for the parents and to ensure the safety
of our faculty, staff and students. If you have any questions about our new procedure please call the office at 549-7867.
This year we are preparing to continue the Oak Grove tradition of EXCELLENCE, but to an even higher level of greatness.
As we continue to adapt to the new state and federal changes in education we will continue to do our best to make learning fun.
We will go above and beyond to challenge each student to be the best they can be. Please remember that you are also very
important to your child’s success – your love, support, and encouragement make all the difference. Working together we can
accomplish many goals for the children. Thank you for your support and we are looking forward to another great school year!
