Whitley County School District District Ed News NON PROFIT ORG. U.S. POSTAGE PAID WILLIAMSBURG, KY PERMIT NO. 14 “Making Great Things Happen” VOL. 21 NUMBER 1 JULY 2013 WWW.WHITLEY.KYSCHOOLS.US First day of school for students - August 7, 2013 Superintendent Scott Paul welcomes students back to school! Dear Families of the Whitley County School District: We hope that your family has had a safe and enjoyable summer. The 2013-2014 school-year will mark the 50th Anniversary of Whitley County High School. During the past 50 years, the high school has had numerous renovations and upgrades and thousands of students have walked its hallways. On Friday September 13th, Whitley County will host the Alumni Bowl which will spotlight the 50th Anniversary. On this night, we will proudly recognize alumni and staff from the first graduating class along with other former staff and faculty members. We would like to invite everyone for an evening of celebration, fun, food and memories. Once again, the administration, faculty and staff have been working throughout the summer to Every Student. Every School Day. Free Student Meals. The Whitley County Board of Education will be participating in the United States Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Option (CEO) during the 2013-2014 school-year. The CEO option allows the school district to provide a free breakfast and lunch to all students, regardless of economic status. All students will receive two free, nutritious meals each school day. In order to extend this program beyond the 20132014 school-year, we need our parents participation in the program. Parent/Guardian Support Parents must continue to complete household and income forms as they have in the past for the school food service program. The forms are to be filled out exactly as if the household was applying for free or reduced lunch. Parents may also be contacted by their child’s principal or Family Resource/Youth Service Coordinator to obtain additional data needed by the district as we participate in this pilot program. The participation of our parents and guardians is essential for the district’s participation in this program beyond the 2013-2014 school-year. Many grants and other sources of funding for instructional resources depend on the data collected from the household income forms that have been used to determine free and reduced lunch eligibility. Please complete and return the household income form in a timely manner so the district can begin data collection. If you have questions about the Whitley County Schools food service program, please contact Sharon Foley at (606) 549-7000, Ext. 2031 or the cafeteria manager at your child’s school. We strive to instill within our students a sense of personal pride as well as a collective pride for our district. The first day back for the students will be August 7. Students are expected to arrive on time, follow proper dress code, be prepared, be respectful and ready for instruction. Welcome back as we work together for a successful year at the ROC! Terry Huddleston, Principal [email protected] Whitley Co. District Ed News • 3 Pleasant View Elementary School 85 Stringtown Road Williamsburg, KY 40769 PH: 606-549-7867 Ready or Not Here I Come! Bobby Blakley, Principal [email protected] I remember those words from my younger days and I also remember yelling, “I’m not ready yet!” which always guaranteed me extra time! It would be nice if starting school was like that, but we all know that wouldn’t work so yes, ready or not…the new school year has arrived! For the past few years teachers and students have conformed and adapted to many educational changes. I hope this summer has afforded them time to rest, to enjoy their family and friends, and to also re-energize their thinking and enthusiasm. We anticipate a busy, prosperous year for our students and we’re as ready as we’ll ever be! Teachers have attended trainings to learn about new standards, teaching methods, assessments and we are anxious to receive the results of last year’s state assessment so we can formally gauge our progress. This year one of our major goals is the improvement of student writing. It is used in every part of the state assessment so it’s important our students learn to clearly communicate in written forms. We have a few projects planned that will inspire effective and authentic communication. The construction of our new school, which will soon be underway, will provide several learning opportunities for our students and we are very excited and appreciative of our district’s endeavor! Students have been assigned their classes based on several factors and parents should have already received letters from the teachers offering valuable bits of information. Our open-house is scheduled for August 5th 4:00-6:00PM and I hope everyone attends. Procedures, expectations, student performance and other relevant topics will be discussed. Probably, one of the most valuable benefits of attending open-house is being able to start a trusting relationship between the home and school. There’s no better way to get the year started off right than with accurate information and familiarity. We encourage participation in the district’s P.A.V.E. Program (Parents as Volunteer Educators). This program has made a positive impact on our school family in previous years. Information will be available at open-house or you may call the school. Also, our P.T.O. is always looking for active membership. Contact Shirley Lawson for more information. Now, for a few quick reminders: · The doors open at 7:00 AM. Students dropped off earlier than 7:00 will not be supervised. · Visitors will not be permitted in the building after 8:00 A.M. without prior approval · All visitors must register at the office. · Breakfast is served from 7:00-7:45 AM · Our school calendar has a new element this year: Two early release days in October. · We continue to offer after school programs: Save the Children and Century 21. Both programs will begin about mid-September. Information will be sent home at a later date. “Panthers” Again, we look forward to seeing you and your family at open-house. District Ed News Whitley County East Elementary School 13781 Highway 92 East Siler, KY 40763 PH: 606-549-7097 The beginning of a new school year is always exciting because it holds so many new opportunities and much anticipation for students and teachers alike. I hope that everyone has had a long, relaxing summer. I have enjoyed seeing and talking with several students at the different summer programs this year, like 21st Century, RIF, and Comp Care activities on our campus. In addition to seeing the students at school, I always look forward to seeing our students and families throughout the community. I am sure that this year is going to be a great year for the Whitley East community. I am very happy to announce that all students will be receiving a free breakfast and lunch this year, as well as a healthy afternoon snack! One of the new instructional programs that I am very excited about is the opportunity to have active learning times in the mornings, beginning with the second week of school. From 7:15 until 7:45, any student may come in early and take AR tests in the library. In addition, computer lab will be open for students according to a schedule to practice their keyboarding, technology, math, and reading skills with quality on line learning programs, like Spelling City, Study Island, and morestarfall.com. Students in grades 2, 3 and 4 should be prepared for more books from the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program. Finally, I am extremely happy to report that the students K-6 will receive Scholastic News magazines, with interactive access as part of library/media instruction. Students in Pre-K will receive a Clifford, the Big Red Dog themed news magazine. It is truly a great time to be a student or staff member at Whitley County East Elementary. Our school has achieved so much; we want to continue that tradition, and build on it. Yes, it will be a lot of hard work, but anything worth having requires hard work. Parents, you can help your students achieve by talking with them about the things they are learning in school. Ask them to tell you specific terms; you will find they are glad to talk about it! We have a wonderful school. I look forward to serving our community as a school principal, and if I may be of any assistance in my service to the students of this community, please stop by, my door is always open. “Mustangs” Mike Partin, Principal [email protected] Whitley County High School 350 Boulevard of Champions, Williamsburg, KY 40769 PH: 606-549-7025 Assistant Principals: Al Ysidro, Rachele Rice, Amanda Croley Alan Sweet, Principal [email protected] I would like to welcome everyone back for another exciting school year at Whitley County High School. We look forward to providing our students opportunities to excel and become college and career ready as they progress toward graduation. We have our Freshman Academy orientation planned for Tuesday, July 30 from 11:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. We hope this will help our freshman students make a smooth transition from middle school to high school. Our fall sports teams have been conditioning and practicing in order to get ready for their seasons to begin. The first home football game of the season will be the Alumni Bowl, which will be held on September 13th at 7:30 p.m. The Colonels will be hosting Rockcastle County. Some important goals that WCHS has this school year are to continually improve student attendance and to provide opportunities for each student to become college and/or career ready. Parents, please help us meet our attendance goals by encouraging your child to attend school regularly. This will ensure that our students perform better academically and do not fall behind in courses. We will have a new Advisor/Advisee program developed by our counselors instead of a traditional homeroom period this year. This class will meet periodically throughout the year. Each student will have an academic advisor much like a college student. The purposes of the Advisor/Advisee program are to provide guidance to students, reduce dropout rates, increase graduation rates, and improve overall student satisfaction with school. I would like to close by thanking Mr. Paul, Mrs. Trickett and the Whitley County Board of Education for their continued support of our school. I would also like to thank my assistant principals Amanda Croley, Rachele Rice, and Alan Ysidro for all of their hard work to get this school year off to a great start.
