Corpus Christi Roadrunners Roadrunner News Here’s a chance to share your love for running. Running, as you know (I’m preaching to the choir here) can be a great, healthy life long sport. Many kids are not introduced to running in a positive light. Many times, it is a punishment for infractions in PE class. Here is a great way to pass on your love and enthusiasm for our sport. If you have some time to spare, this is a great way to make a difference in the lives of some kids. This may sound dramatic, but I know of many people whom had sports to thank as a positive influence in their lives growing up. The running club coach at Galvan Elementary, Emma Vera, is looking for a little coaching help with her kids. (about 12) She is not knowledgeable about running and wants to get a couple of teams up to be able to run Beach to Bay. She wants someone for a couple of days a week for about an hour a day. 2 hour commitment a week. They meet from 3:15 to 4:15 PM. She will have a liability waiver to release any aspiring coach from any liability issues. Because this is a fledgling running club, they have other needs: Club singlets or maybe monies to purchase them and volunteers to run with the kids at training runs and Beach to Bay. These kids ages range from 8 to 10. Early morning runs are my favorite runs in my training plan. I started running early mornings just to beat the heat in the summer. Then I found there are more benefits to running early mornings than, ‘just to get it out of the way for the day’. The sunrise on the bay is something you should see if you have never had the chance to do so. Sometimes the water is like glass and it is hard to deter- mine where the water stops and the sky begins. With beauty aside, there are some oddities you have to see to believe. I have seen men in their ‘white tighties’ getting the paper (he was as surprised as we were, HELLO!) , the remains of late night parties on lawns, a car that didn’t quite make the parallel Oso Pier at Ennis Joslin @ Shoreline parking requirement in early morning. front of an apartment building. How about the well preserved road kill ‘Frisbees’ that secretly serves as a personal mileage marker for you. Send me your ‘early morning’ stories, I’m sure others would love to hear, and pix if you have them. Happy running! Held annually for nearly two decades, the SunMart Texas Trail Endurance Run has developed a reputation as one of the more challenging races in the Lone Star State. Actually, the even is two runs – a 50-mile run with a 12-hour maximum time limit and a 50k run with an 11 1/2-hour time limit. Together, these runs make the SunMart Texas Trail Endurance Run the largest ultra event in the United States. Both runs take place in Huntsville State Park, north of Houston. This year’s event was set for Dec. 6, 2008. A prerace pasta party was held Friday, Dec. 5 at the Sheraton North Houston (near Bush Intercontinental Airport). There also was a post-race barbecue. All participants received a ‘premium’ goody bag which included items such as a polo shirt, fanny pack, rain poncho, cap and more. All finishers received a medal and their choice of a Tyvek jacket or afghan blanket. By Charley Ozuna Sunmart....what a beautiful run! As many of you may or may not know Saturday was my first and official Ultra Marathon. The weather was perfect, overcast and cool. The start temperature was right about 31 degrees and warmed up to about 61 degrees. When we first entered the State Park at 7:30 or so it was pretty creepy with the darkness in the trees and the lake had an eerie fog coming off the water. My wife said if I heard banjos dueling (deliverance) or a chain saw (Friday the 13th) to not look back and run faster! All kidding aside it was an awesome trail and beautiful scenery! My goal was to finish, and to finish in under 6 hours. I am pleased to announce I did both, 5:57:50 the course provided many obstacles, roots, stumps and rocks which ended up in me falling, picking myself up and dusting myself off and checking my Garmin to make sure it was OK to only find that I fell exactly at the 26.2 mark of the race. I thought it was humorous but realized that afterward I was truly on my way to becoming an "Ultra Marathoner". My success was based in part to Mr. Rich Martucci...who in his wise and weary way pulled me through to the finish. Thanks Rich... I love you man! and the man upstairs who allows me to do the thing I love everyday.I have already decided that I am in for next years 50K. First things first... Houston, Austin and the Prickly Pear 50K in San Antonio. It was fun to see everyone on and off the course. It's nice to know that all the training and advice paid off big time for our first timers”.—Rich “Ron McGee gave me the best advice ever. You're not running a marathon; ‘you're running two 10-milers and one 10k. Separating it that way makes it much more palatable. A 10-mile run? easy. Another one? easy...(after putting the first one of of your mind). A 10k run?....ok, I won't lie...no matter how I thought about it, it was tough by then. But anyway, it was a fun event, and I'm grateful to be able to listen to all of your marathon stories and now have some sort of personal experience as a basis for understanding! Congrats to all of you who were there....Corpus was well-represented, and it was great meeting up with you all there and relaxing afterward.” -Alissa (first marathon) “Everything about the race was as it was told to me. Not knowing what to eat and when, I snacked on those gummy bursts starting at mile 13 through mile 24, e-caps at mile 13 and mile 20, Cliff Bar gu at mile 21. Water or gatorade at every stop starting after mile 3.” - Alamar (first marathon) Please send your race report to: [email protected] with pictures if you have them, I will post all the reports on the web page. An Inspiring Houston Marathon Story Alice Jenney is quite a person. She is 52 and has Lupas. She is also fighting cancer. Last week, she was in the hospital figuring she would have to skip the Chevron Houston Marathon she had been training for .Alice took our FLS Beginners Speedwork in the fall. Alice is also a member of Fort Bend Fit. She was tough, worked hard, and improved greatly. She averaged 1:45's for repeat 400's, never having had done speed-work before. Only last Friday, her doctor gave her the okay to run Houston. She was excited, but understandably nervous. The race as a challenging day. At Mile 9, another runner stepped on her heel and her shoe flew off. She scrambled to find it and put it back on in the crowd. At Mile 18, her illness caused her to faint. She fell in a heap, bringing down four other runners behind her. Bloodied, she popped up upon regaining consciousness. On she ran. At our FLS Mile 23 water station, she realized that despite the mishaps, if she sped up she might qualify for the Boston Marathon. Speed up she did, almost a minute a mile the last three miles. She qualified for Boston by one minute in 4:04, a six-minute PR. "Whether you believe you can or believe you can't, you're probably right." -Henry Ford Please send me your race reports or just your comments and perspective of the race. Pictures are ALWAYS welcomed. With no running experience at all he suggested I sign up to be on a Beach to Bay team. It was kinda fun, but the camaraderie of the Thursday night Roger Soler runs hooked me. Current weekly mileage:4-6, still having pain from a pelvic fracture suffered in a bicycle crash months ago. Favorite place(s) to run: Different countries. There's nothing like getting up early in a foreign country, going for a refreshing run, catching the early morning hustle and bustle, and finding your way back! Favorite racing distance(s): Half marathon; long enough to get into a groove and not so long as to be so painful. Favorite Race: Arizona Rock N Roll Half. I really got a great high in that race, good music, exceptionally cold at the start, many fellow runners and great crowd support Pre-race preparation: A good night's sleep, maybe a morning roll in the sack, stiff cup of coffee, and away we go! My running/training philosophy is: Listen to your body; rest day if you're tired, step back if you're in pain, run far if it feels good. Running partners are the best! My racing philosophy is: 5K's make you faster. PRs: Not so important, since I peaked a few years back. Okay, if you really want to know: Marathon 4:40 (much knee pain), Half Marathon 2:01:05,10K 51:09,5K 25:55, Half Ironman 6:16:06, Ironman 16:30:00 (again the knee). Other than running, my interests are: Bicycling, Triathlons, Photography, Hiking, Gardening, Family, Traveling, Cooking, its hard to keep up. I run out of time for them. One other thing that CCRR members would like to know about me: Being the partner to Frank and injury prone, I find myself spectating often. It can be fun watching races; the power plays, who's up, who's down, and photographing the big races. So make the best out the life you have and enjoy the people around you! This is a new feature. I would like to highlight all of our members. I will be sending out a questionnaire to you soon; if your email address is correct on our membership roles, or just answer the questions on page 6 and email them to me. I started again almost two years and run 24 miles a week for my health and weight control and now only run 5 or 10 k's. I have no ambitions to run marathons or Ultra-marathons. I began running because: I was over weight and didn't want to spend money on a health club only to quit going and have to keep paying so I decided to do something I could do and no be obligated to. Before I knew it I was running 60 miles a week, 40 pounds lighter and on the board of directors ( CCRR ) as the equipment director. Current weekly mileage: 24 Favorite place(s) to run: My favorite place to ever run was the Steamboat Springs Marathon course in Colorado. The view was spectacular to say the least. Locally Ocean drive is my favorite running area although I run in my neighbor hood most of the time. Favorite racing distance(s): The marathon was always my favorite. Pre-race preparation: I wasn't very good in that area. I didn't do much of the right things! I ran so I could eat!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My running/training philosophy is: To just get out and run. You don't have to be an elite runner or win a trophy every weekend to be a part of us. Just get out and put one foot in front of the other no matter how fast. My racing philosophy is: I don't really have any. Just as I said above just get out there and exercise. PRs: I ran right at 100 marathons and about 5 Ultra's. I'm going by memory but my marathon PR was 3:03 and change. I ran the Boston marathon 9 times. I don't really remember my other pr's. I think my 5K was somewhere around 18:50 ish. My best accomplishment was running the Jackson 50 mile race in 6:56 finishing 5th or 6th and having Don Winkley and Robert Perez pushing me. At the time that was the 50 mile national championship. Other than running, my interests are: Race directing Beach to Bay and making it the best darn race in Texas. I also spend time hunting at my ranch in Sarita. (South of Kingsville) One other thing that CCRR members would like to know about me: I'm serving my 20th year being involved in the CCRR and Beach to Bay.
