DOREEN HENRY Tel: 020 7243 2633 Facsimile: 020 7229 2994 E-Mail: [email protected] Website: www.victorialeague.co.uk Editor: Bonnie Rozorio, Membership & Administration Officer 1 In February I wrote to Her Majesty The Queen, our Patron, to congratulate her on the Sixtieth Anniversary of her Accession to the Throne. My letter was shown to her Majesty and in return, she asked the members of the Victoria League to accept her good wishes for a most memorable and enjoyable Diamond Jubilee year. Our project to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee is, of course, the construction of a Secondary School in Futa Village, in Pejeh Chiefdom, Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in Africa and during the rebel wars, 1300 schools were destroyed. We are now over the half-way point to reaching our target of £10,000. Like the Conservative Party, we are willing to accept any size donation, large or small. If you give £100,000 you will certainly be in our Premier League. A donation of £250,000 will ensure you can attend a supper party in Doreen’s flat on the first floor of Student House! Seriously, I hope you will consider making a contribution to this very worthy cause. In the coming months, we have a very interesting programme of events. I particularly draw your attention to the Student Concert on Wednesday, May 2 at 7:30pm. This will be held at the Royal Over Seas League thanks to the generosity of their Director-General, Major-General Roddy Porter. The proceeds from this concert will go towards the Sierra Leone School Fund. In May, limited number of members will be visiting Marlborough House, the Headquarters of the Commonwealth Secretariat. The magnificent building was gift from Her Majesty the Queen to the Commonwealth on the death of Queen Mary. In June, the various events will take place to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, including a Service at St Paul’s Cathedral on Tuesday 5 June. In order that the Service should be representative of the various aspects of the Nation, a ballot was held of the charities of which Her Majesty is a Patron in order that they could send a representative. I am delighted that the Victoria League was one of the successful charities and I will be representing the League at the Service. I hope you will watch the Service on television and share with me in my joy that the Charity of which you are a member is represented at such a wonderful occasion. Enjoy the Summer, Mr Lyn D. Hopkins B.Sc. MBA FCA ASIP Chairman 2 With the recent good weather, it is beginning to feel like spring has indeed sprung. The trees are beginning to show signs of new foliage and the garden is showing brighter colours than that dreary winter ‘brown’. Soon the Student House will be looking much brighter too: The outside is having its regular obligatory paint, so the building will be enveloped in scaffolding then revealed (after a few months), restored to its former glory. We will be sure to take lots of photos, as unfortunately with the London grime it will not stay that pristine for long… We are all aware of what an exciting summer London has planned; though I know some people are not as keen as I am! Sure, there will be loads of additional visitors, travel chaos, price hikes and tacky souvenirs everywhere, but you can just stay at home and watch it all on television, safe in the knowledge that you will at least be sure of good coverage from our television channels… I for one will be glued to the television for the Jubilee celebrations – which I am sure will be Britain at its best, with all the pomp and circumstance deserved of such a special event. For the Olympics I even have tickets for a couple of events so will be there in person, as well as catching up with events on television. I do hope you will look at our events programme and come along to some of them. I would especially draw your attention to the Concert on Wednesday 2nd May and the lunch at Student House on Tuesday 24th July. Hope to see you there! Ms Doreen Henry General Manager Please feel free to contact me on 020 7243 2633 or email [email protected] 3 The Queen’s Jubilee Project is nearing its completion: The school is progressing in leaps and bounds, and so too is our fundraising! At the time of publication we have raised about half of our £10,000 target – a fantastic result from much hard work by you, the Victoria League members. We’ve also had a number of very generous donations from local and overseas branches, such as the South Australia Otago, the Burnie, Taranaki, and Horsham Branches of the Victoria League. However, we still have some way to go if we are to reach £10,000. But we can get there - with your help. Here are three ways you can help us to reach our £10,000 target: 1) Make a donation. If you have not yet made a donation and would like to, or if you’ve already donated and would like to again, please fill out the enclosed donation form and send a cheque to ‘The Victoria League’ 55 Leinster Square London W2 4PW. 2) Sign up to Easy Fundraising. If you shop online, make sure you register with easy fundraising and for every pound you spend; the retailer will donate a percentage to our cause. Even if you don’t shop online, you can encourage family and friends who do to use Easy Fundraising. Register here: www.easyfundraising.org.uk/victorialeague and make sure to download their ‘find and remind’ toolbar – a great way to discover which retailers support easy fundraising. Amazon, M&S, Gap, John Lewis, Comet, Vodafone, eBay, Boden, HMV, Play.com, eBay and many more retailers are participating. The best bit: it won’t cost you a penny. 3) Come to our Student Concert! This year, all funds raised from the Student Concert will be donated to the Queen’s Jubilee Project. Tickets are £20 (including a complimentary glass of wine on arrival) and the concert is on May 2 at 7:00pm at the Royal Over Seas League. Not only will you be supporting the Project, you’ll be able to enjoy a wonderful evening of entertainment from our musical students. As you can see from the photos, the Queen’s Jubilee Project is almost finished! The school building exterior is complete and the interior is progressing quickly. The ecosan toilet (located to the rear of the school building) is also under construction, now at roofing level. 4 The well is fully completed, with water from this being used for all construction on site, and now for all drinking water. Until the school is permanently occupied and fully secure, valuable items such as the water pump will be kept off-site, to prevent theft. The Jubilee Project Secondary School, Futa Futa School Teachers Futa School Children 5 WITH THANKS Mrs Barbara Johnson, the Victoria League’s PA to the General Manager, retired in November 2011 after many years of faithful service to the League. In recognition of her importance to the League and her efforts over the years, we have made Barbara a Life Member. I am sure all our members join with us in wishing her many happy years of retirement, and we look forward to seeing her at future events in 2012. FACEBOOK The Victoria League For Commonwealth Friendship is now on Facebook! The web address is www.facebook.com/victorialeague. We have a growing number of followers and find it a useful way to keep younger members up to date with news and events, particularly those living in Student House. NEW MEMBERS Mrs Marie Blaney, of Hillingdon Middx; Miss Hilary Manning, of Student House; Miss Fiona Goodhew, of Student House. WESTMINSTER BRANCH Mrs Eileen Davenport, Chairman of the Branch, reported: In January we had a pleasant surprise, Eileen Dawber, who had been our Branch Secretary until she returned home to New Zealand, came over for a family wedding. At very short notice and after a number of frantic phone calls we met Eileen, Warren and little Paris for lunch in Peter Jones on Sloane Square. It was good to see them again, looking so well and to hear all their news from Dunedin. The Westminster Branch was formed in March 1952, so this year is our 60th Anniversary – a time to look back and remember past members of the Branch and all the friends we have made over the years, plus a time to celebrate and look forward to the future. A lunch-time concert in St Martin in the Fields was our February outing and in March members of the Branch attended the Commonwealth Day Observance in the Abbey – always a very special occasion. 6 HORSHAM BRANCH Mr Grafton Edwards, Chairman of the Branch, reported:We had a most successful Christmas Cheer Party in December, with over 25 members and guests attending. Our next gathering will be a Committee Meeting On April 23 to decide our Summer Program, which will include a Jubilee Tea Party to celebrate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. In recognition of very many years of service as Chairman and Committee member, Olga Nash was unanimously invited to be our Branch’s President at our Summer Party last year. Sadly, Olga passed away last month at the age of 91. She was a very committed member of the League and invaluable to the Horsham Branch, which she held together for many years. Another long-standing member of the Horsham Branch, Gladys Law, aged 95, passed away in March. She had been a member for about 40 years and had served on the Horsham Branch committee. About 6 months ago she moved to the West Country to be near to her granddaughter. Both Gladys and Olga will be much missed. SAD FAREWELLS Mrs Trevor Binny - Elisabeth Binny, who died peacefully, aged 92 on 15 Dec 2011, had been a stalwart supporter of the Victoria League for more than 50 years, serving first as Chairman of the Stour Valley Branch in Suffolk, then as Chairman of the Hospitality Sub-Committee in London and as Vice-Chairman of the League from 1987 to 2007. Over the years, Elisabeth entertained innumerable overseas Members and Commonwealth visitors both in London and in Suffolk. With her husband, Trevor, she also made official visits to many overseas branches of the League, especially in Australia and New Zealand, where she had many friends. Mrs Olga Nash died in late March at the age of 91. Mrs Nash was a steadfast and enthusiastic member of the Victoria League for about 40 years and also served as Chairman of the Horsham Branch. She often welcomed students into her home for weekends, as well as organising Committee meetings, ‘Bring and Buy’ sales, outings and evening parties for members and guests. During last summer she was invited to be the Horsham Branch’s President, when she attended their Summer Lunch Party. Apart from her VL service Olga was always helping others. Until a couple of years ago, she was driving for Meals on Wheels, as she said, taking food to 'Old people'. Many of them were probably much younger than she was! She will be missed. Miss Barbara Roberts passed away in January of this year. 7 A warm thank you to the Victoria League for the exciting welcome to London in the Jubilee Year, from a student just arrived. As an Australian student who arrived in London in January, already I am grateful for the welcoming community of the Victoria League for Commonwealth Friendship. Within three months, I have had the opportunity to participate in various Victoria League Events, and share with you now my experiences. On Sunday 5 February, I joined other Victoria League members at Royal Festival Hall for the ‘Happy and Glorious’ performance of much-loved pieces and songs to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Having only arrived three weeks before, this introduced me to a wonderful collection of British music and memories. A tear came to my eye as the entire Festival Hall audience all waved their Union Jacks and sang lustily ‘Jerusalem’. But there was also Scotland the Brave performed on bagpipes, and an endearing rendition of ‘Danny Boy’, interspersed with amusing memoirs of the Queen from former Royal Correspondent Jennie Bond. On Monday 12 March, I joined several other students from Victoria League Student House in attending the Commonwealth Observance Day Service in Westminster Abbey. With the theme ‘Connecting Cultures’, we listened to inspiring speeches from Dr. Jane Goodall, Andrew Forrest and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie celebrating the threads that tie together people from every continent, faith and ethnicity. Seated in the transept, we did just see The Queen passing by, accompanied by HRH The Prince of Wales, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall and HRH The Countess of Wessex. Afterwards, we excitedly stood for photographs with our respective national flags, very proud to be part of the Commonwealth of Nations. From left: The Australian Flag Bearer, Hilary Manning, Bonnie Rozorio & Fiona Goodhew at the Observance. Also, on Wednesday 21 March, I joined members of the Victoria League at the Victoria & Albert Museum to view the Cecil Beaton exhibition. On display as part of the Diamond Jubilee, this exhibition presented a very touching account of the Royal Family, from Her Majesty The Queen as a young princess with beautiful curls and a sweet smile to HRH The Princess Royal as a child with beautiful curls and a rather more mischievous smile. On return to Victoria League House, it was with interest that I realised the 8 signed photograph of HRH The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, is also a Cecil Beaton photograph, with his name printed in small pencil letters beneath. I look forward to joining other exciting activities later this year with the Victoria League. I also hope to see many other Victoria League members at the Victoria League Student Concert on Wednesday 2 May, where the VL music students may share with everyone the fruits of our on-going studies. Here is her contribution to the RCS’s Jubilee Time Capsule: “One of my fondest inspirational Commonwealth memories was attending the Commonwealth Youth Weekend at Bradfields, Berkshire in May 1960. As a member of The Victoria League in Auckland, New Zealand, it was a great joy to meet many young people from different regions of the Commonwealth during a lovely sunny weekend. We stayed with English members of The Victoria League at the homes and I well remember driving down through acres of beautiful bluebells to my hostess’ home. During the weekend we were treated to a display of English country dancing and a tour of the historic Bradfield College. We also attended a service in the local church with a group of Girl Guides. We were all overwhelmed by the wonderful hospitality given to us by the English members of the Victoria League in their homes, and the interest they took in our own homelands. It was a marvellous Commonwealth atmosphere over the weekend, which I greatly treasure. A few months later in September 1960, I attended as a spectator of the Olympic Games in Rome, which was another treasured occasion. Since 1960 an Australian girl who attended the Commonwealth Youth Weekend often visits London and I always greatly enjoy seeing her.” If you would like to contribute to the Royal Commonwealth Society’s Jubilee Time Capsule you can write a story, or upload a photograph here: www.jubileetimecapsule.org.
