"We've discovered that the thymus gland secretes a family of important hormones
called thymosin."
"We're very excited about thymosin's potential effectiveness against cancer ... If this
initial trial is confirmed by other studies, thymosin may prove to be one of mankind's
best weapons against malignancies."
"A woman with rheumatoid arthritis used to have great difficulty moving around, but
not anymore. She's completing a trip around the world."
"Aging is the most widespread disease that we have. I'm convinced that medical science is going to find a cure for it."
"It is entirely conceivable that people could live to be 150 years old."
This is a very special report on new promising research - a discovery that can have
profound effects on your future and your family's.
For over 2000 years since early
classical times, the existence of
the thymus gland has been
known, but doctors have puzzled
over the function of this pinkishgray bit of tissue lying just below
the neck and behind the breastbone.
For years many strange theories
abounded among early physicians, some thought its function
was to nourish
the fetus or to
prevent the premature expansion
of the lungs. The
doctors of today
came to regard it,
like the appendix,
as a useless organ which had
lost its original
purpose, if indeed it ever had
one.
Much of our primitive knowledge
originates from investigations
made in Europe and especially
in England around the turn of the
century.
With the demonstration of the
endocrine function of the thymus
gland by Burnet, who was
awarded the Nobel Prize in
1965, medical interest was focused on the thymus gland. A
number of physicians and research scientists have begun fitting the pieces of the puzzle together, and some rather startling
facts have arisen that may
change the future of preventive
medicine.
Since the work of Burnet in the
early 60's, immune research has
shown that the thymus gland
plays a central role in the mammalian immune system. All vertebrates possess an immune system that serves as a surveillance

mechanism for protection against
micro-organisms and perhaps
the development and spread of
cancer cells. Recent thymus research has opened up new avenues of attack against luekemia.
A number of cancer researchers
have theorized that our bodies
normally treat developing cancer
cells as foreign tissue and destroy such cells before they can
multiply, and that
cancer may be
the result of some
breakdown of our
thymus-controlled
immunity system.
Although only preliminary
reports
have
thus
far
been published,
several attempts
to arrest cancer by
overcoming such

immunity weaknesses seem to be producing highly
promising results.
According to Dr. Allan Goldstein, "It' s a remarkable
system your body has to defend you against germs
and other organisms that might do you harm. It's sort
of a private army. Its mission is to recognize and destroy dangerous invaders like viruses, bacteria, cancer cells, poisons, and the wrong types of blood."
The thymus gland consists of two fused lobes. The
size of the gland can change in a very short time due
to stress, diseases, and poor nutrition. Furthermore
the thymus gland is subject to an age dependent tissue alteration. The endocrine function of the thymus
gland is diminished, and the gland is reduced in size
for no apparent logical reason. For some strange anatomical purpose the thymus gland begins to shrink
after puberty until it gets down to hardly one-sixth of
its original size.
Diseases of old age go along with the loss of thymus
function. The concentration of thymosin, which is the
active thymic peptide fraction, is very active and in
high concentrations during childhood but begins to
decrease in the third and fourth decade of the life of
whole host of infectious diseases, and all forms of
cancer - result largely from a weakening of the T cell
immune system. The fact is that the incidence of the
diseases of old age occurs in direct proportion to a
decline in the number of T cells that comes with age.
In other words as the T cell system becomes weaker
as we grow older, we fall victim to cancer and those
other miserable diseases of aging.
Recently Dr. Paul B. Chretien and his colleagues at
the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland,
reported on a very significant medical trial. They administered high-dose thymosin for just six weeks in
conjunction with intensive chemotherapy to 21 patients with advanced cancer. The results were amazing. The median survival rate was more than doubled. Ordinarily patients with lung cancer at this stage
might have expected to live an average of 240 days.
Instead they lived more than 500 days. Some were
alive and disease-free two years later! If this initial trial
is confirmed by other studies, thymosin may prove to
be one of mankind's best new weapons against cancer.
Dr. Jerry Daniels, Chief of Rheumotology at the University of Texas medical branch in Galveston, administered thymus extracts for periods up to two years to
six patients with systemic lupus and one patient who
had rheumatoid arthritis plus another agonizing disease. The results were very encouraging. Hormones
produced by the thymus may also stimulate the female reproductive system. Research work was done
by Robert W. Rebar and Ahira Miyahe of the University of California School of Medicine in San Diego.
Their finding may have practical implications, the
researchers believe. For instance, thymus extract
might be successfully used with women who do not
ovulate because of a luteinizing hormone-releasing
factor deficiency, thereby bringing about luteinizing
hormone-releasing factor production from the hypothalamus as well as ovulation.
Nutritional supplementation can increase the level of
thymus function and T cell production and increase
the concentration of thymosin, the thymus hormone.
most individuals and is extremely low in old age. See
figure I.
There are two different immune systems in the body.
One is made up of B cells. They protect against viral
and bacterial infections. The other one is composed of
T cells, it is the most important of the two. The T cells
guard against other viral infections, mycobacterial
infections, fungal infections, and cancers. The instant the lymphocytes spot a foreign organism in the
body they begin to produce antibodies against it, and
they in turn alert other cells to manufac-ture antibodies too.
According to Dr. Goldstein the so-called diseases of
aging - like rheumatoid arthritis, myasthenia gravis,
and the other serious auto-immune diseases, a
Enzymatic Polypeptide Fractions are a group of
Thymic factors and free amino acids which make up
the Thymus hormones. These hormones include
Thymosin al, Thymosin B1, Thymopietin 11, and
Thymic Humoral Factor (THF). They have been extracted from the thymus glands and claimed to have
biological activities in promoting T-cells production.
Thymosins a l and B1 are peptides that have been
shown to contain some of the biological activities of
cruder thymosin fractions. Thymopoietin is a 49residue polypeptide that was originally isolated because of its ability to impair neuromuscular transmissions in vivo.

'Extracted from seven day old calf thymus tissue
Thymic Fraction CX110 is a special crude extract
taken from 7 day old calf thymus glands. This is the
time of an animal's life when the hormones of the
thymus are highly concentrated. This is not true for
all glands, some glands produce a more concentrated hormone after the gland has developed, but
the thymus, as we have already learned, becomes
weaker and less productive as the animal ages. Removal of the gland and freeze drying a specific fraction before the calf is 7 days old produces a very
powerful and active thymus fraction. In an experiment with mice, Dr. Lloyd W. Law from the National
Cancer Institute, found this kind of thymus fraction
essential in resisting cancer development and
growth. The scientists observed a greater growth of
antigenic tumor cells if the immune mechanism was
impaired. A special field of interest regarding thymic
activation of interferon, a glycopro-tein, is a major
factor produced by Lymphoid and T cells.
Spleen, this raw concentrate is used to support thymus function and nutritional activation of the spleen
itself. A special enzyme, lysozyme, found in the
spleen is another kind of defense against infectious
organisms. Henry R. Hanover, M.D., reports the
function of the spleen as follows: disposal of red
blood cells, development of immunity, resistance to
infections, effects on intestinal peristalsis and metabolism of iron. Lymph and Bone Marrow work in
harmony as support of the immune system in relationship to the lymphatic system.
L-Lysine answers a very powerfully active anti viral
effect. Lysine is a natural free form amino acid. It is
one of the eight essential amino acids that the body
must obtain from an outside source. L-Lysine therapy has had favorable reports regarding its effects
on herpes outbreak, including its reduction of the
duration and the pain of outbreaks that do occur (for
more on Herpes, see Reference File No. QQL-265J11). Dr. Cory SerVaas, M.D., who writes for the
Saturday Evening Post, suggests that taking LLysine could prevent herpes reoccurrence and possibly lessen the incidence of cancer of the cervix. The
theory that L-Lysine might possibly lessen the incidence of some kinds of cancer is based on recent
new findings. The thing they found was that this one
amino acid had changed one enzyme. That somehow resulted in a malignancy. That single shift in an
amino acid resulted in a deficient enzyme that then
resulted in the malignant potential in the cell lining. It
would appear that a single amino-acid shift underlies
malignancy.
Besides aiding in the prevention of metabolic infection Vitamin C is a strong cellular preventative of
certain bacteria. Vitamin C protects the body against
major forms of stress by supporting the adrenal
function (see Reference File No. AAC-403-566). Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin, but a small amount
is found in the adrenals which indicates the strong
relationship between C, stress, and adrenal function.
In laboratory studies upon adding C to a test tube of
bacteria of cultured virus, the percentage destroyed
is based on the quantity of Vitamin C. Vitamin C is
involved in more metabolic functions in the body
than we care to count.
Can we improve the function of our own immune system and slow its rate of aging? This was a question
posed by Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw. Their answer, yes, to some extent. They thought in fact that
it was now possible to slow and even partially reverse aging changes in the immune systems of aged
animals. They reported that it had been done in animals and more recently in humans using newly discovered techniques, the most important being nutrients like vitamins C, E, and the minerals, Zinc, as
well as hormones like Thymosin.
According to research conducted by Dr. Cheryl F.
Nochels of the University of Colorado, animals given
adequate vitamin E equivalent to 4 to 5 times the FDA,
RDA for humans increased B-cells tenfold and improvement in activity of T-cells was 3 to 5 times in

response to bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells, than
the immune systems of animals supplemented with
Vitamin E at lower levels.
Protease enzymes which split proteins in polypeptides and peptides such as trypin, bromelain, extracted from pineapple and papain found in papaya
stimulated formation of blast cells, the early developmental immune system cell in animals. This is a type
of white blood cell derived from the thymus gland.
Zinc is another nutrient that is essential for the
growth and development of the thymus gland. It is
equally as important for the formation of RNA and
DNA. Zinc has many diverse functions in the body.
There are 156 enzymes that require the presence of
Zinc. It is also necessary for the metabolism of Vitamin A. Zinc deficiency can cause severe thymus shrinkage which can be reversed with Zinc. The results of
animal experiments suggest that many humans may
be Zinc deficient, that is, receive less than the optimum amount.
Selenium, a trace mineral like Zinc has an important
function in the immune system. Selenium has been
found to have anti-carcinogen and anti-mutagen activity in experimental animal research. It also prevents peroxide formation and its damage through its
anti-oxyidant activity, functioning similarly as Vitamin
E. Peroxidized fats are immune system suppressants, mutagens, carcinogens, cross-linkers; and
compounds like hydrogen peroxide, are implicated
as sources of damage that contributes to aging. Preventing or slowing the creation of peroxidized fats
helps our immune system more effectively.
Vitamin B1 can possibly function as an effective immune system stimulant, although it has not been
tested. Because it is a thiol compound (a sulfur hydrogen link called a sulfhydryl bond), it could have
great merit. Some thiol compounds can greatly
stimulate the immune system but many of them can
damage certain organs. Vitamin B1 can be safely
used as a thiol compound having virtually no toxicity.
Echinacea is one of the most powerful bloodpurifiers and stimulating antiseptic and antiputrefactive agent known to mankind, according to the great
Dr. John R. Christopher. It is very useful in arresting
pus-formation, and valuable for correcting autoinfection. Echinacea was introduced as a potent remedy
and no explanations of its action has been satisfactorily given. That a simple herb should possess such
remarkable therapeutic power and not be a poison
itself, is still to be solved.
Blue Flag works in supporting function with Echinacea as it is healing to the lymphatic system. Blue
Flag is most effective for cleansing impurities from
the blood and as a resolvent of inflammations. When
unhealthy conditions are present in the case of aging
etc., the liver in most cases is overloaded and
stressed. Blue Flag is a powerful liver stimulant, some
claim it to be as therapeutic as mandrake root and far
less irritating. It clears the bile ducts of catarrhal obstructions and restores the normal flow of bile. Blue
Flag stimulates the glands, increases liver and pancreatic function. It is alternative and cholagogue. It
promotes waste and excretion, two processes necessary before any repair can take place. In broad terms,
it is a remedy for "bad blood" or to imperfect lymphatic elimination.
Golden Seal is one of the most powerful and beneficial tonics in the herb kingdom. It effectively tones
the tissues it contacts, increases and improves the
appetite, gastric secretions and flow of bile, and aids
in digestion.
Dr. John Christopher considers Golden Seal to be one
of the best general medicinal aids in the entire herbal
kingdom.
