St John’s CE School Year 3 Curriculum Information Spring Term 2017 Literacy Topics: Legends Word detectives – Spellings Non- chronological reports Poems Spelling: To consolidate knowledge of KS1 Letters and Sounds building on from Six-Phase phonics teaching program. Extend the knowledge of spelling strategies and apply to high frequency and cross-curricular words Children will be encouraged to use joined up writing in all their work. Numeracy Rehearse place value in 3-digit numbers, order them on a number line and find a number in between; compare number sentences; solve additions and subtractions using place value; multiply and divide by 10, count in steps of 10, 50 and 100. Add pairs of 2-digit numbers using partitioning, recognise and sort multiples of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10; double the 4 times-table to find the 8 times-table; derive division facts for the 8 times-table; multiply and divide by 4 by doubling or halving twice Identify 1/2s, 1/3s, 1/4,s 1/6s, and 1/8s; realise how many of each make a whole; find equivalent fractions; place fractions on a 0 to 1 line; find fractions of amounts Recognise right angles and know they are 90°; understand angles are measured in degrees; recognise ° as the symbol for the measurement of degrees; name and list simple properties of 2D shapes; begin to understand and use the term perimeter to mean the length/distance around the edge (border) of a 2D shape; begin to calculate using a ruler; know a right angle is a quarter turn; know 360° is a full turn; begin to understand angles and identify size of angles in relation to 90° Place 3-digit numbers on empty 100 number lines; begin to place 3-digit numbers on 0-1000 landmarked and empty number lines; round 3-digit numbers to the nearest ten and to the nearest hundred; use counting up as a strategy to perform mental subtraction. This term the class will be taking in part in Music Workshop with Terry Hogan (Barnet Advisory Music Teacher) Art and Design Technology Children will be doing work related to our Creative Curriculum topics P.E. Swimming this term will be on Monday and P.E /Games on Tuesday (next half term). Please ensure that your child has a correct and clearly labeled P.E. uniform. Please ensure that all their belongings (even their socks) have their names clearly displayed next to the labels. P.E./swimming bags must have children’s names on the front. The swimming bags and the P.E. bags will be sent home after each lesson and children should bring them back as soon as possible. Computing The children will use laptops and ipads in class. The computing topics this term are: We are bug fixers - finding and correcting bugs in programs We are presenters – video performance R.E. Exploration of Christian Faith, Identity, Belonging, Temptation & Salvation. Creative Curriculum We continue with our Topic Earthquakes and Volcanoes. The class will take part in a workshop – Wednesday 11th January. Class trip to the Natural History Museum – Tuesday 17th January Our second topic is Music based and it will link in with the work they are doing with Terry Hogan. Homework Reading- on a daily basis. Please fill in and sign the Reading diaries weekly and send in with the homework. Remember to discuss the books with your child. This will improve their comprehension skills. Children will be able to choose a book from the class library and keep it until they finish reading it. They can change their book on any day of the week. The variety of classroom books is limited and must be supplemented with regular visits to a Public Library. Children will get spellings and times tables on a Tuesday, tested the following Tuesday. Numeracy and literacy/creative curriculum homework will be uploaded to the website on a Tuesday and collected the following Monday. Children might be occasionally given extra homework/ project work to do at home. Please ensure that the children do their homework and bring it to school on the day it is due. The homework is designed to reinforce what they are learning in school and should be timetabled into their week. All written homework must be signed by the parent.
