Deck Permit Application Requirements
With the submission of a Deck Permit Application please provide the following
documents:
1. A complete building permit application form
2. A survey or plot plan showing the property lines and the location of
proposed deck dimensioned to all buildings and property lines
3. Two copies of the deck construction drawings. The drawings must have
sufficient detail so that someone, following the drawings, could build the
deck
Construction Drawings
The construction drawings must contain the following details:
1. Foundation Plan detailing
2. Footing size and location
3. Size, span, and direction, of beams
4. Size, span, and direction of floor joists and decking
5. Dimensions of all components
The construction drawings must contain elevations to demonstrate the following:
1. The general appearance of the deck
2. Cross Section detailing
3. Footing depth and construction
4. Height of deck walking surface above grade
5. Height of guard above walking surface
6. Step details
7. Deck construction
8. Guard construction
9. Details, such as deck to house connection
Indicate the following on the Site Plan:
1. Overall deck dimensions
2. Location of deck in relation to house
3. Location of deck in relation to lot lines
4. Stair location(s) and width
Guards and Handrails
Guards and handrail details must conform to the Ontario Building Code SB-7
Guards for Housing and Small Buildings Guidelines. If using a guard not listed in
the SB-7 Guidelines, two copies of manufacturer's installation instructions for
proprietary products stamped and signed by an engineer must be submitted.
Please ask for details where you purchase the system.
Permit Fees
Permit fees are calculated based on $0.38/sq.ft, $12/$1000 of the total
construction value, or a minimum of twenty five dollars ($25). Accepted
methods of payment are cheque, cash, or debit card.
Permits are typically issued within ten business days provided the
application submission is complete.
