EDITORIAL
We are a circumference society, with little access to
the centre. We live on the boundaries of our own
lives in ever widening circles, confusing edges with
essence, too quickly claiming the superficial as
substance. The centre does not seem to hold us or
draw us back. We can remain on the circumferences
of our lives for a very long time, so that it feels like
the only way of ‘life’ available.
Indeed, not many people are telling us there is anything more to life.
The primary mediating institutions in our deconstructed society are
the media and the business world. While these institutions are not
‘bad’ they are certainly inadequate to name our soul or entice our
spirit and imagination. We are at a serious disadvantage if we take
them as the ‘bottom line’ for life, which is ironically the economic
perspective.
Deconstruction began as a form of literary critique that acknowledged
a piece of writing does not have just one meaning and that meaning
largely depends on the reader. It is a method aimed at revealing the
inadequacy of a view that only one meaning is present. Applied more
widely to society, it becomes evident that the centre is no longer
understood to hold a common point of reference or understanding.
Deconstructive readings of history, for example, have changed the
entire discipline of history. A deconstruction of ethics has had a similar
effect. I acknowledge that this is a paralysingly brief description of a
large topic, but the end result is the same; and that is that there is
nothing universally substantive to support a commonly understood
meaning of life, purpose and culture.
For us in Christian Education, the centre is the God question. It is a
question that is not resolved in our intellect or in morality. Rather, it is
worked out in us when we agree to bear in ourselves the mystery of
God; His suffering in the world and His joy in the world. We are unable
to find the centre alone, but rather in community. We do not think
ourselves into new ways of living as much as we live ourselves into
new ways of thinking. In other words, our circumference experiences
point out that we really do not know what it means to be human

unless we know God. And in turn, we do not really know God except
through our broken and joyful humanity, exemplified in the life of the
Christ. It can be that we worship the journey rather than doing His
journey so as to be transformed in the process. Even in our unity with
God it can be hard to find a strong sense of identity and authentic
experience of holy living, and to find the appropriate boundaries.
Sometimes it is easier to just belong to a group than it is to live out of
the experience of belonging to God, and to have an identity that is
insecure and somewhat tribal of being ‘like them’, rather than
pursuing the Imago Dei together in community.
Towards the end of his life, Carl Jung said he was not aware of a single
one of his patients whose problems could not have been solved by
contact with what he called “the Numinous”, or what we in turn would
call God. It’s an extraordinary statement from a man who had no love
for religion. In spite of our other cultural imaginings, we have no real
access to who we are apart from the human expression of God in the
Christ. It’s the real question to be resolved, the ‘who are we’ that
connects to who or what is at the centre that lures our soul to life.

PRIMARY NEWS
FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY
Last week, Year 3 enjoyed their annual activity day
and night, and on all accounts, this was another real
hit with the children thoroughly enjoying the
opportunity to share an extended day at school with
their friends. A visit to Science Works on Friday
capped off a wonderful two days. I extend my thanks to Mr Horton,
Mr Gillie and other staff who assisted on the day to make sure
activities were fun and well supervised. A number of parents also
made a sensational contribution and we are most grateful to each for
their terrific support.
Year 4 enjoyed their two day annual camp on Monday and Tuesday,
and were blessed with cool, but beautiful weather seeing all of the
planned activities being held in superb conditions. An overnight stay
away from home always sees many weary children the next day and I
am certain they all slept well back in their own beds on Tuesday night.
I extend my thanks to Mrs Naccari, Mrs Bezemer, Mr Gardiner and Ms
Pearson (Pre-Service teacher) for their support and care of the
children across the two days. Many thanks are also extended to Ms
Tuckwell, Mr Griffin, Mr Ciacia and Mr Ghobril for their valued
assistance.
A reminder that the College is participating in the Woolworth’s Earn &
Learn program and that a box for stickers is in the main foyer should
you choose to shop at Woollies.
The Year 3-6 Athletics Carnival has been rescheduled for next
Wednesday and will be held here at school. As always, parents, family
and friends are welcome to come along and cheer.

Junior Swimming Program
On Thursday 23rd July the Year Prep, 1 and 2 students started their 8
week Swimming Program, at Epping Leisure City. It was so exciting to
see all of the students sitting on the side of the pool as they were
educated on the water safety component. Then each individual
student was assessed by some fantastic Swim Teachers and put into
groups.
The students had a 1 hour swimming lesson and got out of the water
tired, hungry and ready to come back again next week. Thank you to
all of the Parent helpers for your support of this program.

our Year 9 students. This will be a week to explore
different aspects of the City and to build confidence

YEAR 9: City Cite Week Starting Soon!
Starting Monday 3 August (next week!), our wonderful Year 9’s will
spend an exciting week exploring Melbourne’s CBD while conducting a
‘Big Question’ group work research assignment. The students have
been busy since the end of last term preparing for the program; it has
been marvellous to witness the enthusiasm and dedication with which
they have approached this task.
The students have received a City Cite Student Information booklet
which details everything they need to know to help make the
experience a safe and fruitful one. I encourage parents to read
through the booklet closely with your children over the coming week
to support them through this journey.
At the conclusion of the City Cite week, on Friday 7th August at 5.30pm
at the venue, parents are invited to come and enjoy their child’s
presentation of the work they achieved during the week. It’s a
wonderful night of celebration. Please make an effort to attend.
Please pray for us as we embark on this exciting learning adventure
together.
Warm regards,
Paul Grech - City Cite Coordinator
Julie Leitch - Year 9 Coordinator

Secondary House XC & fundraiser
PVCC will be holding an adidas School Fun-Run as a major fundraising event this year. The event will be held
st
as our Secondary House Cross Country Carnival on Friday 21 August within the school grounds.
View a video on the Fun-Run http://www.youtube.com/v/ImpA0uFPzgs
This year the school House XC is a healthy, fun and active fundraiser that ensures we send the right message to
our students about getting active, having fun, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and thinking of someone other than
ourselves. The main focus of this event is participation. Family support is most appreciated as we encourage all
students to get involved.
Participating in the run will be compulsory as it is a whole secondary school House event however gaining
sponsorship for our House XC run is optional (although each house will receive points for $ raised!)
All secondary students have had the opportunity to collect a Sponsorship Form to help gain sponsorship on
behalf of the school. The funds raised will be donated to one of our preferred school charities “Project 10:Ten”
(which aims to provide education for every child in Uganda).
We ask all parents to read the Sponsorship Form and sign the front page to grant permission for their child to
fundraise and participate in this event.
Participating students are asked to return the signed consent form ASAP to the PE Office!
In the Sponsorship Form you will find many other benefits such as the chance to win a family holiday in
Disneyland!
You can also help us win an extra $1000 for our school, by participating in the Bupa Family Challenge. We’re
encouraging all of our student families to register for the Fun Run Challenge at
www.bupafamilychallenge.com.au. The Fun Run Challenge has been designed to help you and your child work
together to prepare for the House XC. You will have access to fantastic training exercises, nutrition tips, recipes
and health guides to help you get ready for our House XC and develop some healthy habits as a family. The
school with the most registrations will win $1000 so every family counts! Remember to enter our school name
and the FUN RUN promo code when you register.
Students wanting to track their progress, and use online fundraising, can do so by logging onto
schoolfunrun.com.au/students and creating a Student Profile Page.
Finally, we would like to welcome parents and family members to attend the Secondary House XC Carnival day at
st
the school on Friday 21 August to help cheer on the students. Adidas will provide a huge Start/Finish inflatable
arch that will add to the atmosphere!
If you would like to volunteer and help out on the day please contact me.
Thank you, good luck and happy fundraising!
