Science Experiment File Folder Project
✔ Problem: Which bubble gum brand lets you blow the largest bubbles?
✔ Hypothesis: If I use the Hubba Bubba bubble gum, then the bubbles I blow will be the
largest.
✔ Materials:
◦ Trident Tropical Twist
◦ Extra
◦ Juicy Fruit
◦ Orbit
◦ Double Mint
◦ Hugga Bubba
◦ A ruler
◦ A partner
✔ Procedure:
◦ Gather all of your supplies (listed above).
◦ Unwrap a stick of Trident Tropical Twist gum.
◦ Chew it.
◦ Blow a bubble.
◦ Have your partner measure it with the ruler.
◦ Record the measurement.
◦ Repeat steps 1-6 with the remaining five bubble gum brands.
✔ Variables:
◦ Dependent: The length of each of the bubbles
◦ Independent: The bubble gum brand being tested.
◦ Control variable(s): The ruler being used as well as the scientist performing the
experiment (me).
✔ Data:
The graph below shows the results that I obtained after having performed the bubble gum
experiment.
The average measurements for each trial were as follows:
•
Trial 1: 1.83333333333 cm.
•
Trial 2: 2.166666666667 cm.
•
Trial 3: 2.166666666667 cm.
✔ Results:
The graph I created based on the results of my experiment showed that, out of all the bubble
gum brands I purchased in order to perform this experiment, Extra is by far the only brand that
produced the largest bubbles because if you take a look at the data section of this folder, you'll
notice that the only brand whose bubbles reached a length of more than three (3) centimeters
was Extra.
✔ Conclusion:
My hypothesis was incorrect, because I thought that the Hubba Bubba brand bubble gum
would produce the largest bubbles. Unfortunately, the experiment proved me wrong.
Instead, Extra produced the largest bubble in the experiment during the third trial.
Therefore, I concluded that Extra is the brand of bubble gum that will aid its owner in
making the largest bubbles possible. I did not control how much time I gave myself when
trying to blow the bubbles for each brand and trial. If I had the chance to perform this
experiment again, I would make sure that the time I took blowing the bubbles was a
controlled variables. Besides that, I don't think I would change many things from my
original procedure. If I had to perform a science experiment with bubble gum in the
future, I'd test how long it takes for different bubble gum brands to lose their flavor.
