It is strange. You are reading a Belmont Filmhouse brochure intro written from a train in northwest Poland, by someone trying to connect the dots of his journey back to north-east Scotland.
Thank you Whisky Galore!.
Not so long ago I met someone who found their way to Scotland from Gorzow, Wielkopolska,
hence the current predicament. I cast my mind back... Shortly after that, Belmont Filmhouse
showed a season called Masterpieces Of Polish Cinema, curated by Martin Scorsese. I previously
hadn’t seen much Polish film and watching 4 or 5 of these was a wonderful introduction. The
films provided me with somewhat of a cultural foothold in a country I now think of as my second
home.
So, it is somewhat strange to be here, thinking of Whisky Galore! - a film I have not yet seen,
but much of which was filmed in Portsoy, the next town to where I grew up. Portsoy is a
quintessentially Scottish fishing village where most of my dad’s side of the family was from. I’m
particularly hoping to see the former outdoor pool my grandfather worked at as a boy. Although
on at Belmont Filmhouse in June, it is unlikely to be shown in a ‘Masterpieces Of Scottish Cinema’
season in Poland any time shortly. However, you’d think it would provide a small window into
Aberdeenshire if it was (although we don’t all drink that much - most of the time anyway...).
Film of course doesn’t only talk to and of cultures, societies, locations and so on. It also has
dialogue with itself. Take cover star Baby Driver. Edgar Wright is the king of the cultural reference
- see the Seinfeld pop in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World for proof of this. In Baby Driver you can trace
the lineage through Refn’s Drive, to Walter Hill’s The Driver, to the Alain Delon vehicle, Le Samouraï.
Walter Hill gave weight to this himself, talking about his good friend Edgar on a podcast I
listened to in Gdansk. And, given that this timeline begins with a film that influenced the French
New Wave and ends with our latest release you can be sure that most of the rest of what we’re
showing fits somewhere snugly in between. Even Whisky Galore!.

François Ozon • France/Germany 2016 • 1h54m • Digital • German

moderate violence. • Cast: Pierre Niney, Paula Beer, Ernst Stötzner.
Julia Ducournau • France/Belgium 2016 • 1h39m • Digital • French

Unpredictable French auteur François Ozon defies
labels once again with this sumptuous and striking
period drama. In the immediate aftermath of WW1,
Anna, a young woman, finds a mysterious Frenchman
laying flowers at the grave of her late husband.
Adrien, who claims to be an old friend, is met with
resistance, yet he and Anna gradually become closer
as she learns of his deep bond with Frantz.
Frantz takes a typically Ozon-like direction, switching
the perspective of the source material and writing an
entirely original second half.

Aki Kaurismäki • Finland 2017 • 1h38m • Digital • Finnish with English
subtitles and unsubtitled English • 12A - Contains moderate violence,
racist behaviour. Cast: Sakari Kuosmanen, Sherwan Haji.
Aki Kaurismäki’s superb new film is a humane, funny
and compassionate study of that most pressing
of global issues: the plight of the refugee. With
trademark doleful wit, the director focuses on the
unlikely alliance between Wikstrom, a poker-playing
restauranteur, and Khaled, a Syrian refugee, newly
arrived in Finland and seeking asylum. Winner of
the Silver Bear for Best Director at Berlinale, this is
the second in a planned trilogy about the European
migrant crisis, following 2011’s sublime Le Havre.
One of the most notorious films of 2016, Raw is a
truly outrageous and original horror-psychodrama
about coming-of-age and carnal desire. Lifelong
vegetarian Justine joins her older sister at veterinary
school and is soon engaged in a carnivorous hazing
ritual - the gateway to a dangerously seductive world
of raw meat consumption. Raw meat of every kind...
Young Justine’s life plunges into an adult world of
experimentation, wild parties, violence and this
newly-awakened craving...

This odd, funny and surprisingly powerful fantasy
psychodrama from Timecrimes writer/director Nacho

Hathaway) finds her affluent city lifestyle come to an
abrupt end and retreats to her hometown, where she
reunites with childhood friend Oscar (Jason Sudeikis).
As she succumbs to her alcoholism, news comes
from South Korea that a massive monster is laying
waste to the city of Seoul. It’s bizarre, terrifying news,
that gets stranger still when Gloria learns that her
downward spiral is making it happen...

Whisky Galore!
Fri 2 to Thu 8 Jun
Gillies MacKinnon • UK 2016 • 1h38m • Digital • PG - Contains mild bad language. • Cast: Gregor Fisher, Eddie Izzard, James Cosmo, Kevin
Guthrie, Naomi Battrick, Sean Biggerstaff, Ellie Kendrick .
The warmth, whimsy and, of course, the whisky which made Whisky Galore! such a success in both the source
novel and Alexander Mackendrick’s 1949 film are alive and well in this version of a much loved favourite.
The story is set on the fictional, isolated Scottish island of Todday, in the Outer Hebrides, where gloom sets in as
the wartime rationing of whisky runs out. When a cargo ship carrying whisky runs aground, the shrewd islanders run rings around the buffoonish Home Guard commander (Eddie Izzard) and conspire to hide away cases
of the precious amber nectar. With a cast of familiar faces and emerging stars, including Gregor Fisher, James
Cosmo, Ellie Kendrick, Sean Biggerstaff and Kevin Guthrie, much of this new cinematic vision of Whisky Galore!
was filmed up at Portsoy and it had its World Premiere at Edinburgh International Film Festival 2016.

Citizen Jane:
Battle for the City
Mon 12 to Thu 15 Jun
Matt Tyrnauer • USA 2016 • 1h32m • Digital • PG - Contains infrequent
racist language, drug references. • Documentary.
In 1960, architectural journalist and activist Jane
Jacobs wrote The Death and Life of Great American
Cities, a hugely influential work which argued
against urban renewal programmes and presented
a revolutionary new way of thinking about the
construction of a city - one which began with people,
not buildings. This timely documentary takes as its
central point the David-and-Goliath battle between
Jacobs and ruthless city planner Robert Moses as she
harnessed people power to save Greenwich Village
and SoHo from destructive expressways.

Voiced by exec producer Tilda Swinton, this fascinating
documentary uses personal correspondence,
performance roles and extraordinary archive footage
shot 100 years ago to explore the life of English writer,
archaeologist, diplomat and spy Gertrude Bell - whose
post-WW1 exploits saw her often described as the
‘female Lawrence of Arabia’. Through her letters and
journals, we hear her eerily prescient observations on
the Middle East in the early 20th century, as well as the
relationships she forged, as she navigated the Arabian
desert and the all-male halls of colonial power.
Cate Shortland (Lore, Somersault) directs this taut,
sensual and disturbing thriller set in a beautifully shot
Berlin. Australian photojournalist Clare (Teresa Palmer)
embarks on a passionate holiday romance with
Andi (Max Riemelt), a charismatic local. Their affair
suddenly changes pace, however, when Clare wakes
up in Andi’s apartment to discover he’s gone to work
and left her locked inside. It seems like a mistake
anyone could make; however, it’s soon evident that
Andi has no intention of letting her leave...

Déborah François, Sabine Azéma, Gérard Melan.

language. • Documentary.
Sumptuous 19th-century period drama by Danièle
Thompson (Orchestra Seats) which stars Guillaume
Gallienne as post-impressionist painter Paul Cézanne
and Guillaume Canet as Émile Zola. Thompson’s
sixth feature charts the decade-long friendship and
eventual fallout between Cézanne, who was born
into a wealthy family but struggled to make a living
as a painter, and Zola, who came from a family of
more straitened circumstances but achieved fame
and prosperity as a politically-engaged novelist.
Moving through the corridors and bowels of an
enormous and disorientating structure - a textile
factory in Gujarat, India - Rahul Jain’s discerning
camera takes us on a descent down to a place of
physical labour and intense hardship. Machines
observes the life of the workers, their intense labour
and the environment they can hardly escape from.
With strong visual language, memorable images
and carefully selected interviews, Jain tells a story of
inequality, oppression and the huge divide between
rich, poor and the perspectives of both.

Whitney ‘Can I Be Me’

Nick Broomfield, Rudi Dolezal • USA/UK 2017 • 1h30m • Digital • 15 - Contains strong language, drug references. • Documentary.
From award-winning documentarian Nick Broomfield (Chicken Ranch, Biggie and Tupac) comes a new insight
into one of the greatest singers of all time. Whitney Houston was the epitome of superstar - an “American
Princess” who became the most awarded female artist ever. Even though she had made millions and had more
consecutive number ones than The Beatles, she wasn’t free to be herself, and tragically died at just 48 years old.
Made with largely never-seen-before footage and exclusive live recordings, Can I Be Me tells Houston’s
incredible and poignant life story with insights from those closest to her.
The screening on Sunday 11 June will be followed by a live satellite Q&A from the UK Premiere with
co-director Nick Broomfield.

Rules Don’t Apply
Miss Sloane
Fri 26 May to Thu 1 Jun
Fri 9 to Thu 15 Jun
Warren Beatty • USA 2016 • 2h7m • Digital • 12A - Contains moderate
sex references, infrequent strong language. • Cast: Lily Collins, Alden
Ehrenreich, Warren Beatty, Matthew Broderick, Annette Bening,
Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, Candice Bergen.
John Madden • France/USA 2016 • 2h12m • Digital • 15 - Contains
strong language, brief strong sex. • Cast: Jessica Chastain, Gugu
Mbatha-Raw, Sam Waterston, Alison Pill, John Lithgow, Mark Strong.
With rising stars Lily Collins and Alden Ehrenreich
in the lead roles, Rules Don’t Apply is a witty, starstudded ‘50s Hollywood yarn directed by Warren
Beatty (who began his acting career in that decade).
An aspiring young actress (Collins) from a devout
Baptist family and her ambitious young driver
(Ehrenreich) struggle hopefully with the eccentricities
of their employer - unpredictable billionaire Howard
Hughes (Beatty). Their instant attraction not only
puts their religious convictions to the test, but defies
Hughes’ #1 rule about employee/talent relations...
Classic Re-release
In the world of political power-brokers, Elizabeth
Sloane (Jessica Chastain) is the most sought after
and formidable lobbyist in D.C. Known equally for
her ruthless cunning and a track record of success,
she has always done anything and everything to win.
When she switches firms to work against a campaign
to encourage gun possession among women, she
finds that winning may come at too high a price...
John Madden’s film, thick with twists, brinkmanship
and haunting moral questions, is a sharply-scripted,
character-driven political thriller to savour.

Woody Allen • USA 1979 • 1h36m • Digital • 12A - Contains infrequent
strong language • Cast: Woody Allen, Diane Keaton, Michael Murphy,
Mariel Hemingway, Meryl Streep.
Federico Fellini • Italy 1954 • 1h48m • Digital • Italian with English
subtitles • PG • Cast: Giulietta Masina, Anthony Quinn, Richard
Basehart, Aldo Silvani, Marcella Rovere, Livia Venturini.
A magnificent digital release of this iconic Woody
Allen classic. Isaac (Allen) is a television comedy writer
nervously contemplating the complexities of his life
- the triviality of his work, his ambitions, his disastrous
relationships with women, and the imminent betrayal
of his best friend. As if these private machinations
weren’t enough, his lesbian ex-wife is about to publish
a book about their marriage and divorce... An edgy
social comedy framed as a loving tribute to neurotic
New York, overlaid with an evocative Gershwin score,
it’s funny and sad in exactly the right proportions.
Gelsomina (Giulietta Masina) - a simple-minded
girl - loves the drunken, boorish circus strongman
Zampano (Anthony Quinn), who bought her for a few
lire, put her to work as a clown, and has since ignored
and neglected her. When she finds a kindred spirit in
gentle tightrope walker (Richard Basehart), she begins
to question this life she was sold into. Well over sixty
years since it won the first Academy Award® for Best
Foreign Language Film, Federico Fellini’s magnificent
all-time-classic La Strada returns to our screens.

The Duke of Burgundy
Me Before You
Sat 17 Jun at 3.20pm & Sun 18 Jun at 6.10pm
Thea Sharrock • UK 2016 • 1h50m • Digital • 12A - Contains moderate
sex reference, suicide references. • Cast: Emilia Clarke, Sam Claflin,
Janet McTeer, Charles Dance.
Peter Strickland • UK 2014 • 1h44m • Digital • 18 - Contains sexual
fetish theme. • Cast: Sidse Babett Knudsen, Chiara D’Anna, Eugenia
Caruso, Monica Swinn, Fatma Mohamed.
Taking its title from a rare species of butterfly, The
Duke of Burgundy chronicles the increasingly
intimate relationship between wealthy amateur
lepidopterist Cynthia (Sidse Babett Knudsen) and her
housekeeper, Evelyn (Chiara D’Anna). As Cynthia’s
demands begin to betray a sadomasochistic streak,
Evelyn dutifully submits to her humiliations with
a surprising relish. In another director’s hands, this
material might easily have tipped into the severe.
Peter Strickland (Berberian Sound Studio), however,
once again demonstrates a marvellous gift for
modulating tone. An intoxicating cinematic curiosity.

All children, except one, grow up...
Captured live at the National Theatre, a recorded
performance of JM Barrie’s much-loved tale screens
in cinemas. When Peter Pan, leader of the Lost Boys,
loses his shadow, headstrong Wendy helps him to
reattach it. In return, she is invited to Neverland,
where Tinker Bell the fairy, Tiger Lily and the vengeful
Captain Hook await. A riot of magic, music and makebelieve ensues. A delight for children and adults
alike, Sally Cookson directs this wondrously inventive
production, a co-production with Bristol Old Vic.
The story has been told before, but never like this.
An occupied desert nation. A radical from the
wilderness on hunger strike. A girl whose mysterious
dance will change the course of the world. This
charged retelling turns the infamous biblical tale on
its head, placing the girl we call Salomé at the centre
of a revolution. Internationally acclaimed theatre
director Yaël Farber (Les Blancs) draws on multiple
accounts to create her urgent, hypnotic production
on the stage of the National Theatre.

Dunkirk

Christopher Nolan • Netherlands/UK/France/USA • Cast: Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Jack Lowden, Kevin
Guthrie, Barry Keoghan, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard.
The legendary evacuation of Allied soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk - a pivotal moment in the Second
World War - is brought magnificently to screen by Christopher Nolan in one of the most hotly-anticipated films
of 2017. Told from three perspectives - the beached infantry, the rescuing navy/civilian vessels and the airmen
in the sky - much of Dunkirk has been shot on 70mm IMAX film and Super Panavision 65mm film, making
it only the third major motion picture of this decade to be shot and shown theatrically in 70mm (after Paul
Thomas Anderson’s The Master and Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight).

Coming Soon
Sofia Coppola • USA 2017 • 1h31m • Cast: Elle Fanning, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Colin Farrell , Angourie Rice, Oona Laurence, Addison
Riecke, Emma Howard, Wayne Pére.
An ever-darkening Southern Gothic tale set in a Civil War-era girls school in rural Virginia, The Beguiled is a reimagining of the 1971 Don Siegel thriller starring Clint Eastwood. Directed by Oscar® winner Sofia Coppola (Lost
in Translation), this new version - shot on 35mm film - casts Colin Farrell as John McBurney, a Union soldier who
finds himself in the care/custody of the teachers and students of this very sheltered school when he is found
wounded on the grounds. Soon, the house is in the grip of heady sexual tension, rivalry and sinister intent,
leading to a highly unexpected turn of events...
