This date symbolizes how far into the year
women must work to earn what men earned in
the previous year. However, this year
Michigan is observing it on April 25th,
because state legislators will be in Lansing
that day and will hear the voices of women
and men who are demanding pay equity.

THE PRESIDENT’S CORNER
“Every woman must have a purse of her own,” is
the Susan B. Anthony quote that is the
inspiration for this year’s Lavish Luncheon: The
Power of the Purse.
Branch members and guests will realize the
Power of the Purse when we report the proceeds
from the Lavish Luncheon that will enhance our
local high school and college scholarships.
Another way to recognize the Power of the Purse before the Lavish
Luncheon is to donate new or gently used purses or tote bags at the April
12 branch luncheon at the Village Club. Most of us have them in our
closets, often look at them, and wonder what to do with them. Donate
them on April 12th!
The Birmingham Branch Foundation will provide tax receipts, and branch
members will distribute them to Haven, Lighthouse Path, and other local
charities which are helping women find new lives away from abuse,
poverty and need as they go back to school or look for a job. We all know
the confidence which comes from having the “right” purse on our
shoulder. Help us to inspire that confidence in other women with your
donation on April 12.
The success of this year’s Lavish Luncheon relies on your attendance and
the generosity of our Study & Interest groups. You can look forward to a
delicious meal and an exciting raffle. Franklin Boutique will present the
latest fashions modeled by our very own members, and K. Carroll will
present beautiful purses (including one featured on Oprah’s Favorite
Things).
The Lavish Luncheon will be May 10 at Pine Lake Country Club. Doors
open at 11:00 with lunch served at noon. Random Raffle tickets are 5 for
$10.00. You’ll find the registration form in this bulletin. Ask your friends
and fellow AAUW members to join you. You do not have to send in your
checks together. Have everyone register and indicate seating
preferences. The last day to send in your reservation is April 30, so don’t
delay. For reservation information please contact Pam Hoffman, 248-865
-7257. For other information, contact Patty Orlowski, 248-641-3892.

ARTISTIC ENDEAVORS
You are invited to participate in a
creative morning:
WHERE: Colette Stager’ home,
4779 Rambling Dr, Troy.
WHEN: Wednesday. April 26, 9:30 am
Learn the process of “Suminagashi” or "floating ink"
which is marbling plain paper with water and ink, an
ancient Japanese technique that provided paper
backgrounds for poetry. It's quick and easy because it
uses plain water instead of the “carrageenan” usually
needed for marbling.
Instructor Debra Gash will provide materials for both
black and color, on paper samples - good for cards,
books, and other items.

Congress has its sights set on expanding private school voucher programs. In fact, the House Oversight
Committee is set to vote on a bill to fund the D.C. voucher program for another five years. But there's a
way you can help to stop this and other voucher efforts in their tracks.
Urge your members of Congress to stand up for public education by opposing private school
voucher programs!
When public funds are re-directed to private and religious schools through school voucher programs, we
put the education and civil rights of women and girls at risk. Private and religious schools are not held to
the same civil rights and accountability standards as public schools, and for this reason, AAUW has long
opposed the use of public funds for voucher programs.
Although promoted as “school choice,” vouchers do not provide true choices for students and parents. Not
all public school students can access voucher schools, as private schools can reject any applicant they
choose. Most concerning, private schools often do not have to adhere to federal civil rights laws,
specifically Title IX, allowing for the discrimination of students on the basis of sex, disability, or English
language ability.
Take action now. Tell Congress we shouldn’t give our tax dollars to unaccountable private schools.
Reprinted from AAUW Action Network, March 9, 2017
