“Wheeling Jesuit University offers so much for
our students: a Jesuit education in the spiritual
tradition of St. Ignatius Loyola, and a beautiful
campus where students easily engage each other
and our faculty in an atmosphere of respect and
encouragement.”

LIFE
At Wheeling Jesuit University, our philosophy is rooted in the Jesuit
educational tradition that spans more than 450 years. Academic
excellence, a commitment to serve others and the desire to educate the whole
person — these are the values that make a Jesuit education unique.
We prepare students for thinking in a moral context about relevant, global
topics. The experiences our students gain prepare them for careers in
boardrooms, classrooms, medical centers, laboratories and non-profit
organizations, among other exciting opportunities. No matter their career
path, our graduates are making a difference in the world.
use your COMMUNITY
As a first-year student, you will live in freshman housing that promotes community with your peers and
gives you the opportunity to form life-long friendships. Each floor of every residence hall has a resident assistant who
will usher you through the intricacies of making the transition to dorm life. On the academic side, a faculty advisor
will guide you through your course work at Wheeling Jesuit. This guidance has been well received with 87% of
graduating students recognizing a faculty member or Jesuit as a mentor.
use your BACKYARD
With 70% of students participating in internships and field experiences within the local community,
Wheeling certainly earns its reputation of being a small town with big opportunities.
Situated in the northern panhandle of West Virginia on the Ohio River, Wheeling is a tight-knit, safe community with all the amenities
of a large city. Wheeling’s charm includes unique stores and shopping complexes, beautiful parks, walking trails, coffee
shops and its very own symphony. Local landmark favorites, like The Alpha for drinks and wings and DiCarlo’s for pizza by the
slice, are a short walk or bike ride from campus. If a weekend trip with friends is in the cards, Pittsburgh is just an hour away, while
Columbus, Cleveland and Charleston are within a three-hour drive from Wheeling.

“Even though I grew up thousands of miles away,
Wheeling Jesuit has provided a sense of belonging
to a family that you don’t find just anywhere.
I can’t see myself anywhere else. And no matter
where I end up professionally, I will always call
Wheeling Jesuit ‘home.’ ”

use your CULTURE
With students from more than 21 countries and throughout the United States, Wheeling Jesuit is truly a global community.
Diversity is always celebrated as students from all faiths, ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds call our
campus home. We honor these differences annually at our campus-wide Culture Fest, an event where students share their heritage
and customs with peers, faculty and the local community.
At Wheeling Jesuit,
educating for
leadership is an integral
part of your academic
experience. Whether you are

leadership is a trait that

use your CLASSROOM
Taking advantage of everything Wheeling Jesuit has to offer — a 65-acre campus with modern facilities coupled with a 550-acre
retreat farm and research preserve — means that your classroom isn’t equipped simply with a whiteboard.
Whether classes are held in traditional rooms, at the creek side or in a performing arts studio, venture in and you will hear something
far too infrequent in education today — conversation. Our 15-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio ensures that classrooms will
never be mistaken for amphitheaters or arenas. At our University, quality discussions reign and students flourish. It’s no coincidence
that 97% of students report interacting with their professors outside of the classroom.
“As a professor in the Biology department at WJU,
I have an opportunity to draw on my many years
of diverse teaching experience. The students here are
inquisitive and the conversation held both in and
out of the classroom is enriching for all involved.”

“I was looking for a school where I could do it all. I wanted
the ability to challenge myself both in the classroom as well
as in the pool. Wheeling Jesuit gives me everything I need to
be successful no matter what the obstacle...whether it be a
tough Chem exam or the conference championships. I know
that the lessons I learn at Jesuit as a student-athlete will
serve me well long after I graduate.”

SERVICE
A key component of the Jesuit outlook is taking part in service. That means getting out, getting your hands dirty and
helping others who need it. That means challenging injustice, seeking reform and changing things. But it also means
having fun, learning about yourself and finding friends who share your passions.
The Service for Social Action Center arranges service immersion trips throughout the year for our students. Some
examples include: mentoring at-risk youth; planting gardens at community centers; cleaning, painting, and flipping mattresses
for the elderly; serving and interacting with the poor; chopping wood in Appalachia; marching in Washington, D.C. in support of
important issues; rebuilding communities and wetlands in New Orleans; and visiting villages in Central America.
Nearly every student on campus is involved in service of some sort, whether
locally, nationally or across the globe. In fact, our students donated
more than 26,000 hours of service time in the last year alone.
WJU has also been named to the 2012 President’s Higher Education
Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and
Community Service (CNCS). We are proud to be amoung the national leaders of
higher education institutions for volunteering, service-learning
and civic engagement.

FAITH
We are a Catholic university, but
students at Wheeling Jesuit focus
on discovering and exploring their
own faith. An hour from campus, the
Lantz Farm offers the perfect setting
for retreats and spiritual reflection.
The Jesuit conviction of “finding
God in all things” is especially
prevalent at Wheeling Jesuit, fueled
by the curiosity and varying beliefs
of our students.
At Wheeling Jesuit, 76% of graduates
who participated in a retreat found it
to be an extremely significant
part of their college
experience.
USE YOUR U.
Whether deciding on a school or deciding on a major, you are looking for what best suits you — you are
looking for the right fit. At Wheeling Jesuit, we take our motto, “Luceat Lux Vestra” or
“Let Your Light Shine,” seriously. We will help you discover the greatness inside of you, harness it and prepare
you for a successful and rewarding life after graduation.

CAMPUS LIFE
Involvement on campus is a hallmark of our students. You could be standing on
stage in a production at Troy Theater or floating down whitewater rapids at one of
the Adventure Society’s outdoor odysseys. You might join Campus Ministry, play an
instrument in the pep band or end up auditioning for Jesuit Idol. Maybe you’ll write
a column for the Cardinal Connection, our student-run newspaper. Whatever it is
that interests you, you’ll find an outlet on our campus.
Weekends at Wheeling Jesuit are full of excitement. The Ratt, our on-campus pub,
hosts bands every Friday along with theme nights throughout the year. Our Campus
Activities Board plans events year-round for students, including the annual Last
Blast weekend, complete with obstacle courses, rock climbing, concerts and a
highly competitive raft race down Wheeling Creek. To unwind after a long week, stop
by Campus Coffee in the center of campus for Starbucks® with friends.
If you’re looking for a great workout, the McDonough Center isn’t just a place
for varsity athletes; it’s a resource for all students. Consider it your own 107,000
square-foot health club. You can run laps on the indoor and outdoor tracks, play
racquetball, pump iron, get in some cardio at the fitness center, swim laps in the
pool or shoot hoops in the gym. Many activities are offered to ensure your body is as
healthy as your mind.

“Choosing Wheeling Jesuit has allowed me to stay
close to home, while still earning a great education.
The small class sizes have enabled me to form lasting
relationships with my professors and peers that have
helped me to grow as a student, and as a person.
At Wheeling Jesuit, I have been able to learn, not only
through my time in the classroom, but also through the
amazing experiences that I have been fortunate enough
to be part of.”
