(541) 801-0434 Why Teach My Dog to Wear a Muzzle? is such a stigma associated T here with dogs wearing muzzles in David Leer photographer 541-981-0512 [email protected] Dog Photo Sessions and Packages details at: www.creekwalkerphoto.com public or in the veterinary office. This is a stigma that I would like to see changed. Like many things a stigma exists out of a lack of knowledge or misinformation. Most people see a dog in a muzzle and instantly assume that the dog is aggressive. It may be the dog has a high prey drive and will chase anything that runs or over-reacts when touched. This dog’s owner should be congratulated for being responsible. By removing the teeth the dog has the ability to socialize and learn skills while not being a risk to others around him. There are many dogs that are out in public now-a-days that should be muzzled. The DVD “The Muzzle Up Project” by Maureen Backman is an excellent video that goes over the idea of training your dog to be comfortable in a muzzle in all situations. She is trying to encourage people to have their dogs wear muzzles when out and about so that dog bites can be reduced to zero and all dogs have an opportunity to socialize propertly. Most people think of muzzles as the tight band around their muzzle that prevents them from opening their mouth, called an occlusion muzzle. That is a muzzle that is typically seen in a veterinary or emergency setting to prevent bites when the dog is in pain or scared after being injured. The type of muzzles that Maureen is Page 2 AKC B/OB Match talking about are basket muzzles. This type of muzzle allows the dog to open their mouth, pant, drink and eat with it on. The basket muzzle comes in many varieties and needs to be fitted to your dog. Baskerville muzzles work great for blocky head dogs and have large holes up front for eating Continued on page 2. The Italian muzzle has a removable front grill which will allow easier access for eating and drinking. The Lurcher muzzle is designed for dogs with long, narrow muzzles like greyhounds, poodles and collies. DogMuzzle.com has some really good information on the different muzzles that they carry. Like training a dog to wear a head collar there is training that is required to get your dog comfortable with wearing a muzzle. It starts out with allowing them to look at and investigate the muzzle, to having the muzzle on the ground providing treats (the dog sticks is nose in the muzzle to pull the treat out from below it. An excellent way to get their nose in the muzzle willingly is to put the muzzle in a jar of peanut butter and have them put their nose in the muzzle to lick the peanut butter. Never try to surprise them with strapping the muzzle on. This is a very slow and gradual desensitization process. The buckle is around the head and off. The dog always has the right to say “No” or “Stop” by voting with their feet. This process can take many weeks and you move at the speed that the dog goes and make it fun! Frequently they will be robotic and not think that they can turn their heads or walk. This is the time to use the “touch” command to have them target your hand in different locations, treating each time. Eventually you can turn this into a touch recall game so that they come running to get the touch of your hand and treat. With this approach the dog associates the muzzle with fun things and food. Now get the dog used to wearing the muzzle to the veterinary office. This means going to the office, getting on the scale, getting a cookie and leaving. No poking, no prodding. This means that every time they go to the vet’s office they think it will be about getting a cookie and not something bad happening. Even if your dog doesn’t wear a muzzle you should be doing this regularly, just to keep the positive association going. By having your dog wear a muzzle at the vet’s office the staff and veterinarian can relax because they are not worried about being bitten while examining the dog or doing any procedure that might be painful. You get a better exam. You also can prepare your dogs for the exam by getting them used to the handling at home and associated with getting treats. Have your dog lie down on a table. Give a treat. Play with a paw, give a treat. Look in the ear, give a treat. You get the idea….Treats!!! Make it fun for the dog. If your dog knows how to play dead then use this to play dead on the table. Every dog should be comfortable in a muzzle. It removes the stress from the situations when they do have to wear them for their own safety. She has a bit of an independent streak, but that doesn’t stop her from enjoying the attention she deserves. She is a calm and quiet, and is looking for a home that has a lot of the same. She loves to explore the outdoors and enjoys sitting in a loved one’s lap while getting groomed. Miss Kitty is used to being the only animal in the house and would prefer for it to stay that way. That’s okay, though, because she has plenty of affection to give. If you think Miss Kitty would fit well in your home, come down to Greenhill and say hello. Ophelius Ophelius is a true gentleman. He is very affectionate, and likes to show it by giving you a sweet and heartwarming head-to-head bump. He can take some time to warm up to new people but, he is happy to sit in your lap and get head scratches once you have become acquainted. He does have a hard time sharing attention with other animals, and would prefer to be the only pet in the house. That’s nothing to worry about though, Ophelius has enough love and affection to fill any home. Maybe he could fill yours? Hazel Hazel is a happy and sweet young lady. She has a good amount of energy and loves to run around and play, which she shows by bouncing around in a most adorable way. Even though she has a rough time getting along with other animals, her gentle demeanor and love for humans makes her a fine addition to a home with kids. Hazel is looking for an active family that will take her on lots of walks and spend some time in the yard playing. After that she is happy to plop down on a big fluffy bed and take a nap. Hugh Hugh is a very handsome gentleman. He is a natural explorer and loves to follow his nose, is very playful and loves the company of humans.
