Fax: 435-1132 Did you know Angel Island (A.I.) is inside Tiburon’s town limits and is a mere 20-minute
ferry ride from downtown? Called the “Ellis Island of the West” because of all the
immigrants from across the Pacific Ocean who came here during the 19th and 20th
centuries, this one-mile-square piece of land has a history few other islands can rival.
Eons ago, A.I. was attached to the Tiburon Peninsula. After global warming melted the
glaciers, the one-mile-wide valley (now Raccoon Strait) filled with water. When ships
began to explore the West Coast, they passed by the bay’s entrance because, from out
at sea, A.I. made it appear that the coastline was continuous. Finally, in 1775, Lt. Juan
Manuel de Ayala discovered the opening and sailed his ship into a sheltered cove (now
known as Ayala Cove). He named the nearby peninsula “Punta del Tiburon” (Shark
Point) because of its formation and for the many sharks in the nearby waters.
In 1814, the English ship, Racoon, came into the bay, severely damaged. The crew used
the same cove on A. I. as Ayala had to repair their vessel, and the strait between the
island and Tiburon still carries that ship’s name (but spelled differently) – Raccoon Strait.
After Mexico broke away from Spain, the island became a cattle ranch and a favorite spot
for settling dueling challenges. In 1860, it became the property of the U.S. Government,
which used the island to defend the West Coast during the Civil War - with never a shot
fired. Army forts were built – Camp Reynolds, Fort McDowell and Camp Simpton – now
called west, east and north garrisons. After the Spanish-American War, returning soldiers
from the Philippines were sent directly to A.I. to be checked for contagious tropical
diseases.
From 1910 to 1940, A.I. was the West Coast’s immigration station, where as many as onemillion Asians were held in quarantine, living in barracks, a few for as long as several
years. During World War II, it held Japanese and German POW camps, and it was from
here that 300,000 American soldiers were processed to and from the Far East. In 1952,
the top of Mount Livermore, A.I.’s highest peak, was cut off to make room for a radar
station to control Nike missiles. It was obsolete before it was completed, the missiles were
removed in 1962, and Angel Island became a state park.
Business of the Month, Main Street Wine Bar, Nancy Larson
“What I like about this business is that it makes us more a part of this
community,” said Nancy Larson. “It’s something I can do and really
enjoy it.” Brooke Tognazzini sold her business, Prima Palate, to the 15year Tiburon resident last March and moved to Texas. The first thing
Nancy changed was the shop’s name to “Main Street Wine Bar.” An
official renaming Open House will be on Sunday, October 14, 3 to 6 p.m.
In addition to taking on an entirely new business, Nancy is attending
The Culinary Institute of America in Saint Helena and will finish next
May. She also recently enrolled in a “wine immersion program” at the
school in order to become a “certified wine professional.”
After graduating from California State University, Sacramento with a B.S. degree in psychology and social science, Nancy
worked for over 15 years in the pharmaceutical industry. Her last position was with McKesson Corporation as vice
president of product strategy. She met her future husband, Scott, who already lived in Tiburon, and the pair still live here,
with their, now, seven-year-old daughter, Emma. “After Emma was born, I quit working and was immersed in being a
mom,” Nancy said.
Nancy has new plans for her Ark Row business: The focus will be on wine sold by the glass, bottle and case, with a
selection of unique California, French and Italian wines. “We are adding new wines from around the world monthly,”
she said, and we’ll be starting a wine club later this year.” In addition, the Wine Bar sells an assortment of artisan cheeses
and salami from Cowgirl Creamery. They also carry Recchiuti Chocolates. Plans are to have a full kitchen by next summer
so she can offer small plates of food with wine parings daily and to host monthly wine-maker events and weekly wine
tastings on Sunday afternoons. The Wine Bar is the ideal location to hold special events such as birthday, anniversary and
bachelorette parties, girls’ night out and book club meetings. Consider using it for your next party.
Main Street Wine Bar is at 84 Main Street, Upper Ark Row. It holds a Happy Hour on Fridays and Saturdays, 3 to 7 p.m.
and from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sundays, for $7 per glass. Store hours are 2 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, and 12 to 8
p.m. Thursday through Saturday, or anytime by appointment. Phone, 889-8998.

closed to all boat traffic and in-water activities, including
kayaks and paddle boards, from October 1 through March

for overwintering. There are thousands of migratory ducks,
geese and shorebirds that use the bay for refueling on their
