Angles and Triangles
An angle is a figure formed by 2 rays that share an endpoint. In Part 1, you will
learn how to classify angles and then apply this skill to classify triangles.
How can you classify the angle?
Think About It
You can classify the angle based on its opening.
A right angle forms a
square corner and
measures exactly 90°.
An acute angle is less
than a right angle.
An obtuse angle is
greater than a right
angle.

Cambridge, MA—Students at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
have made plans for a flying car. Flying cars
have long been a part of made-up stories. The
students want to make flying cars part of real
life.
Since 1917, people have been trying to
make a flying car, but they have always run
into the same problem. A flying car has never
been as good as both a car and a plane.
The student team at MIT thinks that they
have solved the problem. They have a plan
that uses new materials. They think that the
materials will make the difference in their
flying car. Maybe by the time you start to
drive, you will learn to drive a flying car!
Solve It
The drawing shows a plan for a flying car.
Use the drawing to answer the questions.
1. What type of angle does the tip of the airplane wing have?
2. How would you classify the triangle shape of the airplane window?

Cannes, France—Wallace and Gromit and
Chicken Run are both stop-motion films. They
were made using clay figures that were posed
for every single shot. It was a long and
difficult job—but the movies that were made
were terrific to watch.
The same studio that made those movies
faces a new challenge to make Flushed Away.
This time, instead of using clay figures, the
studio is going to use computers to draw and
move the characters. The studio says that it
has no plans to stop using stop-motion in
other films, but it is pleased to also have
computers to use. The studio can now use
computers or stop-motion, whichever one is
better for the story it wants to tell.
Solve It
Some clay figures have features that are shaped like triangles.
Use the clay figure to answer the questions.
1. Write two ways you can classify the clay
figure’s triangle eyes.
2. Write two ways you can classify the clay
figure’s triangle mouth.
