Anthony Birthday Celebration Hear My Voice: Win the Vote, a one act play that follows the life of a young woman who campaigns for ratification of the 19th Amendment, is coming to The Gathering Place in Milton, Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon, February 13, 2010, to help celebrate the 191st birthday of suffragist Susan B. Anthony. Elizabeth Rainer is the play’s only actor and she is accompanied by videos and photographs as well as soundtrack dialog from other prominent story members as she tries to convince her family that women must win the vote. Along the way she meets other suffragists including Ida B. Wells, Alice Paul, and Lucy Burns. The play is a production of Living Voices, a Seattle-based theatre group that uses video and live performance to bring history alive. Ms. Rainer has been a Living Voices company member since 2001 and has performed in movies and television and in theatres across the country. The annual luncheon honors suffragist Susan B. Anthony, born February 15, 1820 in Adams, Massachusetts, who for more than 50 years was a central figure in the struggle to gain equal rights for women. Anthony traveled, lectured and canvassed throughout Wisconsin and across the nation for women’s suffrage. Since the celebration began in the early 1990’s attendees have contributed over $9500 to the Susan B. Anthony House in Rochester, New York. Open to all, the 20th Annual Susan B. Anthony Birthday Celebration is sponsored by the Rock County Women’s History Committee in partnership with the Janesville League of Women Voters. The reservation deadline is Friday, February 4 with Carolyn Brandeen, or Kris Koeffler. Seating is limited and prepayment of $30 per person is necessary to confirm reservations. Make checks payable to the League of Women Voters at P.O. Box 8064, Janesville, WI 53547-8064. The Gathering Place is located at 715 Campus Street in Milton. Elisabeth’s Blog Follow our President, Elisabeth MacNamara, as she tours the country this election season. You can’t fire the cop and say you are against crime! Submitted by Elisabeth MacNamara LWV-US President Today, we joined with an interesting and diverse array of groups (Judicial Watch, Taxpayers for Common Sense, Common Cause, Democracy21, U.S. PIRG, CREW, Campaign Legal Center and Public Citizen) for a press conference calling on Speaker-elect John Boehner to retain the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) in the upcoming 112th Congress. The League is deeply concerned that many in Congress, apparently wishing to return to a time when there was no meaningful ethics enforcement in the House of Representatives, have called for steps that would substantially weaken the OCE. In this year’s elections, the American people did not vote for less ethics and more corruption. You can’t fire the cop and then say you’re against crime. The retention of a strong and effective Office of Congressional Ethics is essential to regaining the public’s trust. The retention of the OCE -- or its demise -- will signal the direction the new leadership will be taking the House of Representatives on ethics issues. The League urged that the OCE not be weakened in any way. The group said that the OCE must retain its independent, bipartisan leadership structure, the ability to issue public reports, begin investigations on its own initiative, and hire and supervise an independent staff. The League also called for strengthening the OCE by ensuring that it has access to subpoena power. LWV-Janesville Committee Reports Juvenile Justice The presentation was held on Thursday, November 11, 2010 by Lance Horozewski, manager of the Juvenile Justice Division. He gave a comprehensive review of changes being made in services to youth based on research regarding effective interventions. Major changes in how the county will use the current detention center are planned. We will plan to meet with the detention center superintendent after the first of the year. Lisa Ryan, Marilyn Walterman & Kay Deupree Climate Change The Natural Step Study Circles began in early October and continue through the last week of November. Three groups with an average attendance of 6-8 in each. Many ideas have surfaced. We are planning to compile them and ask for a discussion with the Sustainable Janesville Committee in December. Looking forward to a book study in January or February. Hopefully another study circle for those who could not finish the current round. Both Pete Cannon, who serves on the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign board (but key for us is that he is retired from the Legislative Reference Bureau) and Lori Stottler have agreed to serve on a panel on redistricting in March. The third person I am hoping to be on our panel is Jennifer Block (GIS manager at the County Planning, Economic Development and Community Development). March 3rd has been set as the date for an information/educational program. The point of the session will be to answer the question: why H See C ommittee, Page 3 H Committee county’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee a group charged with designing a program for the public should people in Rock County care about redistricting? explaining the criminal justice system.
