POSSESSIVE NOUNS REVIEW
A possessive noun shows possession or ownership.
The car of Diane is gray.
o Diane’s car is gray.
o The car of Diane is gray.
The eyes of Joe are brown.
o Joe’s eyes are brown.
o The eyes of Joe are brown.
Remember These 3 Rules
1. To change a singular noun into a singular possessive noun, add
doesn’t matter if the singular noun ends in s already.
The name of my son is Chris.
The hair of Chris is brown.
’s (apostrophe s). It
= My son’s name is Chris.
= Chris’s hair is brown.
2. To change a regular plural noun into a possessive, add only
another s!
The brother of the girls is short.
The problems of the students are sad.
’ (apostrophe). Don’t add
= The girls’ brother is short.
= The students’ problems are sad.
3. To change an irregular plural noun into a possessive, add
’s
(apostrophe s).
The books of the men are on the table. = The men’s books are on the table.
The mother of the children is nice.
= The children’s mother is nice.
TRICK:
*Cover up the apostrophe and everything after the apostrophe
to see if the base noun is singular or plural
The boys’ shoes are stinky.
