It is hard to believe it has been a year since I first shared our vision for our big renovation project. It has been a year filled with many meetings as well as brainstorming with staff and others. Ideas have been brought up and tossed about and sometimes tossed out but now decisions have been made and we are moving ahead. Hurter objective remains the same. This is to provide private rooms in our nursing center. Our President/CEO current plans call for a memory loss center for nursing on the first floor of Bausman. (This is the area that now houses our Assembly room, front office, administration offices, gift shop, beauty shop and therapy). 17 private rooms with full baths as well as a dining room will be located here. The current nursing center will see all of the rooms become private rooms with full baths except for three which will remain semiprivate. There will also be an updated dining facility as well as nursing station. We have decided to utilize the west side of Nissley, where there are now administrative offices, as more personal care rooms. This will enable us to better meet ongoing needs of our residents. Between the current west wing of nursing and Nissley House a new three story building will contain a new welcome center (front office), administration offices, and a number of resident amenities (including fitness center, woodworking shop, game room and wellness area). On the third floor there will be four two bedroom/two bath apartments. Plans remain as previously shared regarding placement of our new multi-purpose/chapel building and adding “Main Street” along our main hallway between our nursing center & Hamilton & Nissley Apartments. “Main Street” will include a library, gift shop, beauty shop and therapy center. Benchmark was selected by the Calvary Homes Board to be the builder of our project. Plans have been submitted to them for pricing. We continue to ask for your prayers and financial support as we finalize plans and raise the funds needed to see this project become a reality. Veterans Day Program Board Members Rev. It was amazing how clearly they are able to remember the exact units they were in and what made an impression on them. Thank you all so much for your service! We welcomed more than 125 guests who enthusiastically toured our campus—we had five residences open—and had genuine interest in learning more about becoming members of our community of faith and fellowship. We continue to receive applications and calls for more information and tours. From a marketing perspective, it was another great success. Mr. & Mrs. Donald Alban (Joanne) to 535 Elizabeth Drive from Lynchburg, VA Special thanks to the small army of team members and residents who helped make this another great event for Calvary Homes. Mr. & Mrs. Charles Arms (Louise) to 1420 Fellowship Drive; Apt. 204 from Lancaster, PA The date for next year’s event is Saturday, October 21, 2017. Mr. & Mrs. Bradford Heil (Diane) to 604 Elizabeth Drive from Bartlesville, OK Mr. Walter Huss to 630 Elizabeth Drive from Ephrata, PA Directional signs dotted the Calvary Homes campus to help our guests find their way on their self-guided tours. Mrs. Irene Lancaster to Health Care 40-1 from Reading, PA Following their tours, many guests returned to the Assembly Room where they had the opportunity to have their questions answered by members of Administration. New Home for Marketing The Marketing office has relocated to 596 Elizabeth Drive, a standard twobedroom cottage just off the main parking lot. The new office is a combination sales office for the marketing director and assistant, and model home for one of Calvary’s most popular residential choices. The “selection room” for samples of flooring, countertops, cabinetry, and paint is being moved into the remodelled garage to provide a more comfortable and attractive area for clients to make decisions about their new homes. Our new Marketing office at 596 Elizabeth Drive While we continue to unpack, organize, and hang pictures on the wall, we welcome your visit to our new home. Master Control to Earth: “Do you read me?” Residents, staff and their families enjoyed great food, a petting zoo, musical entertainment and fellowship at Calvary Homes annual Country Fair. A beautiful fall day made the event perfect. Our thanks go out to the many employees helped out to make this day such a success! Earth: “Sometimes loud and clear….” With our continued head scratching, and our struggle to convince people of this world that they are going the wrong way, we must Pastor Kevin Brown continue to remember that God is in control. Chaplain The sovereignty of God does not mean that the Lord exercises complete autonomy and control over every decision or choice that human beings make; but it does mean that, whatever decisions are made, or whatever circumstances befall us, God makes everything work together for the good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.” God’s perfect will cannot be resisted, nor can it be thwarted. The Calvary Homes community lives by the Psalm 46 theme, “God is our refuge and strength; a very present help in trouble.” Certainly, we have seen our moments of trouble from the presidential campaigning season and debates, to global social turmoil and national disasters. But, we continue to trust God and believe that His sovereign will is emerging during these “seasons of trouble.” Gail Rehman is anticipating a funnel cake as Carol and Cliff Hurter and Sylvia Conrad are busy fixing them. Karen Atherholt Director of Life Enrichment Bobbie Brennaman and Barbara Boyd enjoy the entertainment. The children of staff and greatgrandchildren of residents enjoy the balloon animals. The Psalm reminds us that God’s sovereign will is non-resistant. David encourages his chief musician to orchestrate a melody and play the music, while the sons of Korah sing it in harmony with the sopranos of the worship team called “Alamoth.” David says, “Sing we will not fear though earth is removed; mountains are shaking, mountains are swelling and throwing themselves into the sea; and waters are roaring and are troubled. There is a river and the streams are making the City of God glad. It is His holy place and the tabernacles of the Most High are in it. God is present in the midst of His people; they shall not be moved, because God will help the city and He will do it early!” So, whatever the political outcome arises in the United States of America; however the global situation plays itself out; and whatever new national disaster comes to bear, God is in control and His will can never be resisted. He will be glorified and His people will rejoice with him. Alleluia! 6 Hot dogs and hamburgs coming right up! 7 Church Tour Residents of Calvary Homes greatly enjoyed a guided tour of historic Lancaster City churches in October. Resident Dick Long (aka Ben Franklin) has led walking tours of local Colonial churches for the past 30 years. Dick led us through four city churches with interesting and informative history along the way. Karen Atherholt Director of Life Enrichment The first stop was the fourth oldest active Jewish synagogue of the United States, the Shaarai Shomayim (Gates of Heaven) congregation located on North Duke Street. This is a Reformed Judaism church, founded in 1747 and their synagogue has beautiful stained glass windows and fall decorations signifying the Holiday of Sukkot, which is celebrated ten days after the Holy Days. Our next stop was Grace Lutheran Church on North Queen Street. Founded in 1874 this church has a beautiful bell tower (which I had the pleasure of ringing!) as well as being the home of the old Lutheran Bell. This bell was imported from England and was used on many historically important occasions, including in 1778 to announce our independence. After being transported to Philadelphia it rang to call the Continental Congress to meet in the courthouse. Later it was used to call the devout to worship and it is now referred to as the Lancaster Liberty Bell and can be seen in the entrance to the church. We had hoped to visit Trinity Lutheran church on North Duke Street but were unable to do so due to a funeral in progress. Dick explained the Memorial Wall which has grave markers of past congregants on the wall on the side of the church. Next stop was St. James Episcopal founded in 1744, also on North Duke Street, which has graves behind the church of some early patriots. One of the graves belongs to Thomas Barton who was the third Rector and served during the Revolutionary War. He had promised to pray for King George of England each Sunday. This caused a division in the congregation between the Patriots who wanted nothing to do with England, and the Loyalists who wanted to be loyal to the king. The Patriots won out and banned Rector Barton from the church and gave him a police escort out of Pennsylvania to New York City. Above: Dick Long begins his narration of our tour at the Memorial Wall outside Trinity Lutheran Church. We finished our trip by learning about what previously was Zion Lutheran Church on Vine Street, founded in 1874, but reluctantly sold in 1982 when church attendance was down and younger people were not joining the church. It was bought in the same year by the Lord’s House of Prayer, a charismatic Christian church which is able to attract young people and is an effective outreach in the city. At left: Grace Lutheran Church stained glass windows All in all, a wonderful day, learning many new things about the rich history of the faith community in Lancaster City! Lord’s House of Prayer on East Vine Street 8 99 Faithfulness to the Lord During one of our many lovely days this Fall, I stopped to chat with two residents on the sidewalk who were giving thanks for several recent opportunities they had to share God’s love and concern with employees. Though their lives of service to Christ took them to mission fields in many faraway places, now they were finding their mission field was coming to them! This is but one of so many examples I could share of how Calvary Home residents continue serving Christ in their “retirement”. In reality, they have never really retired from serving Christ but continue to reach out to others in many loving and caring ways. Thank you to everyone who participated in the Extra Ordinary Give on November 18th! Proceeds from this county-wide giving event totaled $12,175 for Calvary Homes’ Benevolent Fund. Each year, Calvary provides over 13,000 days of benevolent care for residents throughout our continuing care community. These gifts will join gifts to the Calendar Year End Appeal with both helping to brighten our Christmas trees on campus. We rejoice in the Lord for His great gift and for the gifts of these many donors. Daniel N. Snyder Director of Development This example of resident’s continuing faithfulness to Christ should inspire all of us to express our faithfulness to this ministry through an outpouring of support for the Benevolent Fund during our Calendar Year End Appeal. Each year we provide over $450,000 in benevolent care for personal care and independent living residents. If you count the additional shortfall we face from Medicaid funding for nursing care residents, this figure would be over 1.1 million each year! Such needs cause us to regularly rely on faithful giving from friends, families and local businesses to enable the continuance of this important ministry each year. To highlight the faithfulness of donors this year, we are combining giving from the recent Extra Ordinary Give held on November 18th with all giving for our Calendar Year End Appeal and applying them toward lighting our Christmas tree. Each $100 given will place a light on, not only the tree outside the Nissley Building, but also a tree placed in Fellowship Hall! On Thursday, December 8, 2016 at 7:00 pm we will hold our official Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Fellowship Hall. This event will be an excellent time to celebrate God’s faithfulness to us through 2016 and celebrate the generous support of our partners in serving older adults. Giving your gift by December 8th will make sure the Christmas tree will be as bright as possible for this inspirational event all can enjoy. However, if you should miss this date in making your gift, we will continue adding lights to these trees through the remainder of the Christmas season. Please plan to join us for the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and give to help us continue touching lives with loving, quality care well into the New Yea Third Annual Bucket List Ride This year’s bucket list ride took place on Saturday August 13th. Each year the Lord has blessed me with planning and organizing this wonderful event. The motorcyclists enjoy meeting new residents and seeing familiar faces. This year’s event was the first year we had an article written in the newspaper as well as having two news crews; CBS 21, and Blue Ridge Cable 11 record this wonderful event. Adam LaRose, 105, was featured in Blue Ridge Cable’s segment along with Dave Bender, who has given Adam a ride every year since this ride started. Each year gets better and better. More residents are riding and then we have a “Meet and Greet” lunch afterwards with the bikers. I am so thankful for the employees who donate their time to help make this ride a success each year. Next year’s ride is being planned for June and we hope to see you there! On behalf of myself and New Age Riders we were deeply saddened to hear of Adam LaRose’s passing. We are very thankful the Lord gave us this opportunity to have Adam be a part of this ride for the last three years. —Ashley Kohl Medical Records 10 Calvary’s 11th Annual Benefit Golf Tournament a Success! Our Heavenly Father provided a simply wonderful day for 91 golfers who joined us for our golf outing on September 22nd at Four Seasons Golf Course.
