Newspapers of the French Revolution 1848

Newspapers of the
French Revolution
1848
“One of the characteristics of the 1848 revolution was the explosion of
the printed word.”
Newspapers of the French Revolution of 1848
This collection of over 400 titles, many of which have not previously been available
digitally, gives unprecedented access to a historical source of great interest for the
period of the Second Republic. Unlike official sources, the newspapers record the
uncontrolled and often zany expression of a vast range of ideas, opinions and
aspirations during one of Europe’s great episodes of popular uprising: not only
‘serious’ debate in mainstream papers, but the byways of popular activity in response
to great events.

Voices from Wartime
France
“The extraordinary story of how a unique collection of French wartime
newspapers made its way to the British Library.”
Voices from Wartime France, 1939-1945
This collection constitutes the sum of the French press that actually
reached Britain during the German Occupation of France from 1940-44.
This is the largest and most important collection of titles from Occupied
France anywhere outside France, and has remained almost unknown
to the scholarly community. Offering a full picture of the basis on which
many key political decisions were made in Britain about the conduct of
the war in France, this collection will shed new light on a much studied
period.

French Royal Acts
“Pamphlets often contain the details of life and law, at times the only
extant record, with which writer and scholar construct a living
history.”
French Royal Acts, 1256-1794
French royal acts governed every aspect of life in France. They
created the rules and bureaucracies and increasingly
oppressive taxes which helped to bring about the Revolution.
Approximately 16,000 pamphlets covering this important period
in French history are available in this collection. One of the
largest collections of its kind, it offers a wealth of information on
the legislative history and governance of France, as well as
other aspects of French life.
