The next 2 weeks in the Senior School are critical in terms of finishing off one year and
commencing another. All Year 10, 11 families received a comprehensive letter from me a
couple of weeks ago explaining the dates, but I will take this opportunity just to reinforce
these.

At the time of writing this report our Unit 3/4 students are one week down with their final
examinations. In catching up with most of them, I have been really pleased that they have
said how well prepared they have felt and stepping into the gymnasium again does not hold
any great fears for them anymore.
The Unit 3/4 examinations conclude on Wednesday 21 November when we have a small
number of students doing the Chinese exam.
I am writing this report when my class of Unit 3/4 Mathematical Methods are doing their
final of the two examinations. One is always a little nervous!!

House performing Arts
My observations are that students who see College as more than just attending classes do
best. They appear to have the strongest engagement with school and exhibit a sense of
belonging. There are many avenues for this, including after school sport in the BAS
competition where we compete against other schools; participation in the intra-College
activities such as walking group and social tennis; social action and community service;
various ensembles, bands and dance groups as well as the Middle School Musical and, of
course, there is the House Competition.
The House competition runs across the school year and involves every Middle School
student. It includes events such as a Spelling Bee, Writing Competition, Downball, Football
and Trivia. The focus of the House Competition is on maximum involvement. Students
participate with a genuine enthusiasm – at times their zest for their House could almost be
described as tribal. Of all the House activities, none generates more passion than the House

Performing Arts Festival. No doubt parents will have heard about this recently amid the
business of rehearsals, costumes and preparations.
The theme for this year was ‘Friends for Life’ and involved three distinct performance areas.
The first was a choral item, which the whole House was involved in. It was wonderful to see
every Middle School student up on stage singing their heart out in the pursuit of House
points. Secondly, a dance performance, where each House had a nice mix of boys and girls
dancing and their many hours of lunch time rehearsals resulted in a wonderful performance.
Finally, a drama piece performed by the year 9 students in each House which brought
together the three areas: singing, dancing and drama, whilst being consistent with the
theme. All this was done in front of the rest of the students and staff in the Middle School
and whilst it can be a daunting experience, the students appear to thoroughly enjoy
themselves.
Much to the delight of the very passionate Mr Yau, Ross House had a very successful festival
as they took out the choral and drama items and Waters won the dance. The festival
provides our Year 9 House leaders with a wonderful opportunity to develop their leadership
and organisation skills. From the very beginning, onus is on them to take the lead and they
appear to genuinely enjoy the responsibility bestowed upon them. From writing the script
through to organising rehearsals, the Year 9s were most impressive and the staff reflected
very positively on their efforts.
Middle School Health & PE week
At the time of writing, we are in the middle of an action packed Health & PE week. Middle
School PE staff Jason Hutchins and Megan Evans, along with the student leaders, have
organised daily activities for the students to participate in. The message across the week has
been centred around healthy living through a balanced diet and regular physical activity.
Each day an activity a lunchtime activity has been organised and the students have got right
behind the initiative by supporting each event in great numbers.
Monday saw aerobics and Zumba sessions run throughout lunchtime. These were run by
Dance teacher Ms Carbone on the oval. Plenty of interest was generated as the music could
be heard across the Middle School. It was great to see so many students get out of their
comfort zone and dance through their lunchtime. If the number of the red faces in Study
after lunch was any indication then those involved certainly met their daily physical activity
requirements.
On Tuesday a number of novelty events were run by the PE team. These included longest
kick and nearest the pin golf. Wednesday saw our very own version of Masterchef in the
College Café. Contestants Imogen Bedggood (Yr 7), Lochlain Heley (Yr 7) and Hugh Murray
(Yr 9) went head to head in a contest requiring them to prepare a lunch dish with a limited
selection of ingredients. In front of a big crowd of Middle Schoolers, our three chefs worked
vigorously to prepare the ultimate meal. Judges Mr Shepherd, Miss O’Rourke and yours truly
enjoyed the fruits of their labours and found it very difficult to separate the three meals in
terms of their quality. In the end, Imogen’s summer salad narrowly won the contest. Keep
an eye on the Courier as the event is likely to receive some coverage.
As we approach the end of the week, the PE team have planned a staff versus student
soccer match on the oval for Thursday as well as a Beep Test on Friday. The Beep Test is the
final event in the House competition and is a favourite amongst the students. It is a test of
aerobic fitness and will prove a great way to finish the week as the entire Middle School
participates.

Last week Ella Squires and Astrid Livitsanis travelled to Melbourne to compete in the
Victorian primary school state athletics titles. Astrid competed in the 10 year old 800m and
although she didn’t finish on the podium it was a magnificent effort to be there and
represent herself and the school on such a big stage. Ella competed in both the 11 year old
triple jump and the hurdles with outstanding results in both. In the triple jumps Ella jumped
9.65 meters to win the event and be crowned the Victorian champion for her age group. In
the hurdles, Ella made the final which again was a great effort. Unfortunately for Ella there is
no triple jump at the national level so she will not be able to progress any further. However,
it has been an excellent achievement and she will no doubt be a force in the triple jump for
years to come. Congratulations to both Ella and Astrid on their magnificent achievements.
Year 5 & 6 Netball
On Wednesday the 7th of November both the Year 5 and Year 6 netball teams played in the
Grand Final at Llanberris Netball Centre.
The Year 5 team played St Thomas More School - it was a nail biter, but in the end, our
came out on top winning 14-10.
The Year 6 team played against Black Hill Primary School. The girls made it look easy and
had a convincing win 24-11.
A big thank you to all of the staff and parents who made their way down to the centre to
watch the girls in action. They were really excited and appreciated the support.
Congratulations!

Understanding what is meant by Colours
Colours are used at the school to denote excellent in performance in school activities in a
wide range of areas – Sport, Performing Arts, Public Speaking, Service, Publications and
the Duke of Edinburgh Programme.
Parents need to be aware that Colours are not used to reward people for individual and
group activities outside of the school, where the student is not actually representing the
school in competition. Whilst the school will certainly acknowledge students for their
participation and success in such events through assemblies and communication media such

as College Connections and Ring A Roo the criteria for Colours has been set up to reward
people only for school based performances.
The criteria for Colours are awarded in advance and I have listed them below for parents to
understand how they are awarded for each activity.
The staff member responsible for that area will use the published criteria to identify those
students to be nominated for full and half colours.
The Head of Sport, together with the relevant staff member will then consider the
nominations and decide on the allocation of the Colours. The final nominations are then
taken to the Principal who will then confirm the awarding of Colours for each individual in
each activity.

Individual Achievements
I am not sure if parents have caught up with the latest news from The Victorian Schools
Cycling Championships.
The 2012 VSCC Road Series includes 9 zone finals and a state final. There are 16 races at
each event made up male & female, racing & novice, across 4 age groups. The top 3 placegetters for each race receive a medal and entry into the state final.
Jenni White travelled down with the team that had made it through to the state finals, run at
Belmont Criterium Track in Geelong Friday week ago. The team representing BCC included
Nicholas White ,Hayden Emery and Angus Lyons (in the U17 racing category), Magnus
Baker ( U17 novice) and Liam White ( U 19 Racing) . Unfortunately Lucas Hamilton ( U17
Racing) was unable to race on the day.
“Angus Lyons (Ballarat & Clarendon College) perhaps rode the best race on the day by
taking a 500m lead on the JR17 Boys Racing field and essentially time-trialling himself to
victory.”
Liam White finished just out of the medals in a sprint finish. The other boys rode well to
represent the school at state level.

Library book returns and the end of year
As we approach the end of the year I ask all parents to please remind your children to
return their library books before the last day of school on Thursday 6 December. Although
we allow loans during the shorter term time holidays we’d like ALL library books returned for
the end of year break so that we can do a stocktake of the library collection.
As well as looking at home, on bookshelves and under beds etc, can you remind the
students to also look in their locker and school bag and return any books they may have. We
don’t do fines but we do want our books back, they can even be returned anonymously in
the return chute if the kids are worried about how long they’ve had the books for.
A reminder as well for year 12 students to please remember to return any library books they
still have before they finish their final exams.
Premiers’ Reading Challenge 2012
For those students who participated in, and completed the Challenge in September, their
names were printed in the Honour Roll which appeared as a lift out in The Sunday Age on 11
November 2012. I’ve been told that some copies missed out on receiving the lift out so
please contact the library if you’d like to see a copy.
