Current Practices in Utilization of Units for Radiation Measurements Ellen P. Anderson Director, Radiation Safety & International Liaison NAS Workshop on Adapting SI Units for Radiation Measurements in the U.S. Washington, DC * 29 September 2016 Topics • Role of NEI • Current practices by the nuclear industry • Who defines practices in the nuclear industry? Nuclear Energy Institute • The Nuclear Energy Institute is the industry’s policy organization. • Its broad mission is to foster the beneficial uses of nuclear technology in its many forms. 3 Role of NEI • Develop policy on key legislative and regulatory issues affecting the industry; • Provide a forum to resolve technical and business issues for the industry; and • Provide accurate and timely information on the nuclear industry to members, policymakers, the news media and the public. 4 More than 350 Member Companies in Over 17 Countries 5 U.S. Nuclear Power Plant Workforce Demographics • Approx. 100,000 nuclear workers overall - 56,000 utility workers • 65% or 36,000 persons have no formal education beyond high school - 44,000 supplemental workers (e.g. laborers, carpenters, millwrights, welders, radiation protection technicians, etc.) U.S. Nuclear Industry Employment Distribution by Age 30% Utilities Only Total Employment: 25% 2015 – 56,568 % employees 2013–62,167 2011 - 59,700 20% 2009 - 57,200 2007 - 55,900 15% 2005 - 57,900 2003 - 58,400 10% 5% 0% 18-22 23-27 28-32 33-37 38-42 43-47 48-52 53-57 58-62 63-67 67+ Age Range 2003 2005 2007 2009 2011 2013 2015 2013 Trend Source: 2015 Gaps in the Energy Workforce Survey Results. Contractors and vendors are not included. 2015 Trend Units Used in the Nuclear Industry • All power reactors and fuel cycle facilities use traditional units (e.g. rad, rem, etc.) • Exception: Approximately 100 persons industry-wide use SI units for radioactive waste shipments - highly trained and specialized radiation protection personnel Who Defines Practices in the Nuclear Industry? • NRC establishes - regulatory requirements for licensees (e.g. 10 CFR Part 20, 50, etc.) • INPO establishes - practices in excellence for nuclear power plant operations (NPPs only) • NEI provides - policies on key legislative and regulatory issues affecting the industry - representation of members’ positions on generic issues (e.g. meetings, letters, etc.) Conclusions • The Nuclear Energy Institute is the industry’s policy organization, representing our membership on key legislative and regulatory issues; • 100,000+ nuclear industry workers use traditional units except for transportation of radioactive waste; and • NRC and INPO define industry practices.
