A Starr student was recognized by City Council and the Oregon Police Department in September for making a very responsible decision. Elijah Mead came across a gun while out and about in his neighborhood. He immediately got the help of an adult, and the gun was safely removed from the area and disposed of properly. Starr School is very proud of Elijah for realizing the potential danger of this situation and for taking the proper action. Volume 11 Number 3—November 2012 Superintendent’s Message Focus On The Common Core State Standards... Big changes are on the horizon for public schools in Ohio and around the nation. Beginning in the 2014-2015 school year, student assessment will be based according to a new set of standards. New Common Core State Standards (CCSS) have been adopted by forty five states and represent the most sweeping change in the history of public education in America. The new standards are significantly more rigorous and require students to perform at a much higher level. To put it simply, the new standards are a game changer! An example of the increased level of rigor is to compare a current kindergarten math standard to the Common Core standard. Presently, kindergarten students are expected to be able to count to 20 and backwards from 10, and know their shapes, colors and numbers. The Common Core standard for kindergarten requires students to count to 100 by 1’s and 10’s, to count forward from any given number 1-99, to compose and decompose numbers, to think abstractly, to manipulate 2D and 3D shapes, and to understand that 3+2 = 4+1. Expectations for student learning will be significantly increased at every grade level in the academic core subject areas. As you can see, the Common Core State Standards are a big deal! In anticipation of the new Common Core State Standards, the Oregon Schools have been busy preparing teachers and principals for the transition from the current Ohio Michael E. Zalar Achievement Tests Superintendent to the Common Core Assessment. The Race to the Top (RttT) grant has provided professional development funds for activities to assist teachers and principals in mapping and aligning grade level curriculum to the new Common Core standards. In addition, new teaching strategies are being adopted by teachers throughout the district to better focus and standardize their instruction. The district is also considering the possibility of re-configuring grades 5-8 in an effort to better meet the demands of the new accountability system. The Board of Education has been gathering feedback from the community regarding the potential reconfiguration of our two middle schools into 5/6 and 7/8 buildings. The various Community Forums conducted throughout the district have provided an opportunity for parents and community members to engage in conversation with the board about the benefits and challenges of restructuring. The questions and concerns raised from the forums is an important part of the information the district has been collecting so they can make an informed decision based upon what is in the best interests of the students. These are exciting times for the Oregon Schools. While school funding continues to be unstable, we have reduced operating costs and improved student achievement. This has happened because the community is supportive and because staff is committed to making the sacrifices necessary to ensure a high quality education for all students. We have a great opportunity to position our students for success as we transition to the new Common Core Standards. I am confident that together we will rise to the challenge of preparing our children for college and career readiness and for success in the 21st century global economy. I look forward to continuing our work together on our “Journey towards Excellence.” Dr. Michael E. Zalar, Superintendent of Schools, may be reached by calling (419) 693-0661or by emailing [email protected] School Board President's Message Oregon Schools Are Back!!! P.J. Kapfhammer, President Oregon Schools Board of Education As a lifelong resident of Oregon and as a proud graduate of Clay High School, I am pleased to announce that Oregon Schools are on the right path to Excellence! The district has been through some tough times with the loss of tax revenue from state and local sources. Bad economic conditions forced the district to make some difficult reductions in programs and services, although that is now in the past as we move forward. We as a district are excited about the future of Oregon Schools. The community survey we conducted last spring told us the community wants the Board of Education to listen more and we are doing exactly that! The Board conducted six Community Forums since school began this year. Our meetings are more open and transparent, and the board encourages public participation. Every decision we make is based on doing what is right for your kids. This Board of Education believes that the schools belong to the community, and this board is proud to represent the you! I want the community to know that we have great people working in Board members: Front Row: Diana Gadus, Vice President; and Carol Molnar. Back row: Jeff Ziviski; P.J. Kapfhammer, President; and Mike Csehi. our schools, working hard every day to make this district great! We are focusing on investing in the future of your children. With community support, the board is confident of establishing the goal of Excellence! Oregon City Schools belong to the Oregon community. The Board of Education is here to work for you and thanks you for your support! Race To The Top The 2012-13 school year begins the third year of Oregon City School’s implementation of the federal Race to the Top grant. Highlights of this year’s activities include: • aligning the district's instruction to the new Common Core State Standards in reading and math and Ohio's Revised Standards in science and social studies, • the district will begin year 2 of a 3-year plan that provides teachers in-depth knowledge and skills in formative instructional practices, • teachers will begin meeting in grade and subject level teams to analyze data and collaboratively plan instruction to meet the needs of all students, and, • begin the gradual implementation of Ohio's new Teacher and Principal Evaluation Systems. The district's RttT Transformation Team oversees the implementation of the grant for the district. Team members include: Dawn Henry, Director of Teaching and Learning, Terri Hook, District Lead Teacher, Lu Lane, Director of Assessment, Angela Cooney, Fassett Middle School 6th Grade Teacher, Jennifer Conkle, Starr Elementary Principal, and Scott Bruns, Clay High School Humanities Teacher. 2 New Teacher, Same Tradition The Clay High School DECA Chapter participated in the I.A. Competition at the University of Findlay on September 25. This was the students’ first competition since being enrolled in the marketing program. They participated in a variety of competitive events. Eight of the thirteen members were involved in team management case studies. Each team was given a scenario of a business problem and worked together to solve it. The teams presented their solutions to a set of judges made up of college professors and business experts. Two other students went through the job interview process and were judged on how well they answered personality questions and filled out an application. The last three students competed in practice competitions for running for a state office. “Since this was our first competition, I wasn’t expecting us to do as well as we did. We all worked very hard and earned all of the awards we received,” DECA member Riley Shull said. DECA members placed in the following areas: • 1st Place o Kyrie Amirol and Alexia Bryant in Buying & Merchandising Team Event o Tylor Brummett and Carly Calevro in Sports Management Team Event o Aaron Rizo in Parliamentary Law o Todd Klewer in Public Relations • 2nd Place o Hanna Carr and Sydney McQueary in Business Services Team Event o Jenna McGrady and Riley Wasserman in Travel and Tourism Team Event • 4th Place o Riley Shull in Public Relations • 5th Place o Brent Baker in Job Interview This competition also helped prepare five students who then competed at District Competition at Bowling Green State University on October 5. Recess Rocks! Phase 2 of Starr's playground is completed. The 2nd phase of playground equipment was installed at Starr this summer! After waiting for the mulch to arrive, the students are loving the newest additions to the playground. The completion of the playground project was possible due to Permanent Improvements Funds and ongoing fundraisers supported by the community. The renovation of the playground is an ongoing project. The green and yellow playground equipment was purchased in 1997 and has had many updates over the years. Soon this structure will need to be replaced. There is also a need to update the swings on the playground. Fundraising will continue and renovations will occur as the budget allows. Great Strides During the month of October, Coy Elementary students participated in an annual fundraiser for the Cystitis Fibrosis Foundation named “Great Strides.” The fundraiser increased awareness of the disease and raised money for research to combat its debilitating effects. Students walked and jogged for donations and also collected loose change from friends and family. A total of over $900 was collected! Great effort, Coy students, and good work! The DECA IA Competition Team is pictured. Jimmy Murphy and Brent Baker both participated in the job interview event and both received fourth place. Aaron Rizo competed in Parliamentary Law, where he gave a self-introductory oneminute speech, completed a test over parliamentary procedure, and an interview, earning a fourth place award. Todd Klewer and Riley Shull competed in the public relations event. Both gave a self-introductory one-minute speech, created a press release, and completed a test and interview. Ms. Vallie Robeson, DECA advisor, was extremely pleased with these final results. “I know that the competition was tough and the students worked very hard. I couldn’t be more pleased with their efforts. We have had a great start to the year!” Ms. Robeson is the new Marketing Instructor at Clay High School. A Clay Alumna, she is a 2002 graduate of the Marketing Education Program and has taken the place of her high school teacher Mrs. Anna Diekman, who worked at Clay High School for thirty-one years, retiring this past spring. Marketing student Jenna McGrady said, “I know she has big shoes to fill, but I think she is doing a great job. I can’t imagine the amount of pressure she has on her, yet she makes teaching us look easy. We have fun in class and we learn a lot. I’m glad that Ms. Robeson is our new teacher.” The first time that some of the students met their new teacher was on their trip to Carrollton, Ohio, for Ohio DECA Camp in July. Eight of the thirteen students enrolled in the Marketing Education Program attended camp, where they were separated into different groups with other students from schools all around Ohio. They partici- DECA students competed at the District competitions. pated in team-building activities, developed leadership skills, and played recreational sports in their free time. “DECA camp was so much fun. I met a lot of new people, and I found out things about DECA that I didn’t know,” Hanna Carr said. The next event the students are looking forward to is the Ohio DECA Fall Leadership Conference in Columbus in November. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. It is a component of the Marketing Education Program at Clay High School for seniors interested in careers in the business industry. Eisenhower Eighth Graders Learn About Dating Violence On Wednesday, October 3, the eighth grade health classes at Eisenhower Middle School welcomed a guest speaker from Victims Forum. She was invited to the classes to talk about Teen Dating Violence. Students watched a DVD about how these relationships sometimes get started and also how they often escalate into violence. The students were also given a handout on the warning signs of abuse and contact information. A great website for both students and parents to begin this very important discussion is www.cadv- ohio.com and www.loveisnotabuse. com. Please have the discussion with your son/daughter about the dangers of Abusive Relationships (before they begin dating). Students learn about teen dating violence. Oregon City Schools is working hard to improve communication with parents. As part of their efforts, they have recently implemented Power Announcement, an automated communication tool which allows parents to choose how they want to be contacted for various types of district communications. Parents can choose to be contacted via text message, e-mail and/or phone (cell or home) for each of the following types of messages: Emergency Notifications, Student Bulletins, Attendance Notifications, School Cancellation Messages, and General Messages. Power Announcement is tied directly to the PowerSchool parent portal. The district is confident overall communication will improve by allowing the parent to choose which modes of communication are most convenient. It has become evident to the district that traditional ways of communicating with parents are becoming outdated and less effective. Therefore, the district is using social media to connect with the community. You can like “Oregon City Schools” on FaceBook and follow “@ClayHS” on Twitter. The district is simultaneously cutting costs and improving communications. Power Announcement replaces the old automated attendance calling system at roughly half the cost while the social media outlets are free! Additionally, the district is in the process of scaling back printed communications to reduce printing costs and postage. As part of this cost reduction strategy, the district will continue its’ transition to electronic grade cards. According to Technology Director, Nathan Quigg, “Schools have to change with the times to make sure we are effectively sharing information in ways our parents and students utilize. Today’s society expects information as soon as it is available. Parents and students don’t want to wait a week for us to print and mail a gradecard when they can simply login on their phone and get the information instantly through PowerSchool.” The same as last year, parents can sign up to receive their student’s grades e-mailed to them in the PowerSchool parent portal. Parents love the online parent portal and the new iPhone apps, “PowerSchool for Parents” and “PowerSchool for Students”! Access letters for Power Announcement and the parent portal were mailed home in September. In the last two weeks of September, parents and students logged into the system almost 20,000 times. During that time span, “over 60% of our students had records checked by parents and/or the student themselves” Quigg said. The district needs to get the word out to those who have not logged in. If a parent did not receive a letter or needs assistance getting their account setup, they should contact Linda Toth at 419-693-0661 x 3273 or via e-mail at [email protected]. Parents and students will undoubtedly be logging in this week as Oct. 5 is the second grade entry date of the quarter. Clay High School 1st Place FFA Team Geology students search for fossils at Oleander Park. On October 12, thirty six CHS geology students collected Devonian (375 million year old) fossils from Fossil Park, which is part of the Olander Park System in Sylvania, OH. The fossils are abundant in the shale, or mudstone, slag piles that are unusable by the limestone quarry. After that they traveled to Blue Creek MetroPark in Waterville, to see the old, working/farm jail made from Devonian aged limestone, the onsite quarry from which it was excavated and glacial groves that were on the property. This was followed up by viewing the Oak Openings region, which is the 22,000 year old beach of Lake Erie. It was a rare opportunity to see what kind of local geology exists in northwest Ohio. One-hundred-seven students from seven counties in northwest Ohio participated in this competition. These students were tested on their ability to identify common crops and vegetable plants and seeds, as well as over 40 weeds common to Ohio, insects, and plant diseases. They also were tested on their knowledge of soil conservation, plant fertility, insect and disease control, and pesticide use. Finally they completed a team activity which included determining plant variety selection and fertilizer needs, interpreting soil test results, selecting appropriate pesticides, and determining expenses, returns, and potential profit associated with growing a specific crop at a specific location. The Clay High School students on this team were: Nick LaRue - FOURTH Place Individual, Morgan Bourdo - SIXTH Place Individual, Amanda Tolliver - EIGHTH Place Individual, and Javier Salazar NINTH Place Individual Also competing in the event were: Joey Moore, Rebecca Kaczmarek, Ashley Tolliver, Caleb Graham, Amanda Morris, Rayann Diebert, Dylan Harsh, Daniel Wiedmann, Kenzie Myers, Chris Moser, Brendon Knorr, Jarod Ja- cobs, Jose Sanchez, Zach DeWitt, Alli Furll, Brayden Leathers, Celeste Duran, Alexis Loucks, Eddie Donnelly, Vincent Lewinski, Brock Belinske, Adam Reynolds, Skylar Musselman, Amy Trowbridge, and Alyson Jadlocki. Students used the knowledge they learned during class and after-school practices to prepare for the competition, and to prepare for college and careers relating to botany, turf management, landscaping, entymology, soil science, conservation, pesticide application, environmental sciences, and wildlife management. Honoring Veterans Oregon/Northwood Rotary present dictionaries to Coy third graders. Third grade students throughout the Oregon school district can thank the Oregon/Northwood Rotary Club for making sure they know the word-of-the-day! Annually, the Rotary presents every third grade student in Oregon with a personalized dictionary for work at home, and school, demonstrating the Rotary’s commitment to students, and education. Coy’s presentation took place on October 18. Coy’s heartfelt thanks go out to the Oregon/ Northwood Rotary for their continued support and generosity. During the 2011-2012 school year, many schools in the district held fundraisers to benefit the Honor Flight project of Northwestern Ohio. At Starr Elementary School, the fifth graders in Mrs. Hook’s, Mrs. Lewis’, Mrs. Mitchell’s, and Mrs. Nadolny’s classes collected pennies to contribute toward the memory books given to the veterans going to Washington, D.C. to visit the war memorials. Along with the donations toward the memory books, each student wrote a letter to a veteran, which incorporated the writing process used in the 5th grade curriculum. Final copies were written on patriotic themed stationary and expressed the students’ appreciation for each veteran’s service to our country. Two veterans, Robert Fuller and Thomas Schroeder, both Army Veterans of the Korean War serving the 24th Infantry Division, received letters. They were so moved by the letters written by current Fassett 6th graders Madison Curavo and Jaron Henry that they took the letters with them on the trip. Pictures of the veterans holding their letters were delivered back to the two students this September, bringing the connection between student and veteran full circle. www.oregoncityschools.org Go Wild For Reading Master Teachers Pictured are: Tabitha Nadolny; Dave Shafer, OCFT President; Terri Hook; and Dr. Mike Zalar, Superintendent. Terri Hook and Tabatha Nadolny were recognized at the September board meeting for attaining the Ohio Department of Education’s Master Teacher Certification. The Master Teacher program allows teachers to demonstrate their practice based on the Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession. The honor roll is located on pages 6 and 7. Coy students get hooked on reading. The staff at Coy Elementary wants the student body to “Go Wild For Reading.” That was the theme of this year’s annual Right to Read week, and students took part in all types of events to help get them hooked on books. Fostering a love of reading helps a child’s academic skills and introduces them to new and exciting worlds. Every day, students participated in DEAR time or drop-everything-and-read. On Monday, kids went bananas for reading by munching on a banana while enjoying a book, and later got up close and personal with some entertaining Rain Forest friends. During an assembly, they enjoyed the antics of a monkey who could play dead and a talking bird. Tuesday’s agenda included a visit from the Toledo Zoo. More daring students had the chance to pet an alligator! On Thursday, everyone brought their favorite stuffed animal to read to - less daring, but more cuddly! Guest readers from the administration building joined in the fun, entertaining classes with a good story. The week concluded with a visit from the author of “Critters, Flitters and Spitters: 24 Amazing Ohio Animal Tales.” Mr. Rich Sowash spent the day at Coy School talking about his experiences as a writer and sharing his knowledge about Ohio’s awesome creatures. Thanks to everyone for their work in organizing a week of reading fun! Read on! The theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week was “Have Two Ways Out.” People should know two ways to escape from every room, and should designate a place to meet outside the home in case of a fire. Students at Starr School were encouraged to review their home fire escape plans during the week and practice their plan during the evening of October 10. It is important to have a home fire escape plan that prepares the family to think fast and to get out quickly when the smoke alarm sounds. A highlight of the week was a visit to the Fire Safety bounce house and a tour of a fire truck. Starr students and staff thank the Oregon Fire Department and Cleaner and Dryer for sponsoring this event. The kids learned many beneficial lessons which will keep them and their families safe for years to come. "Super U" Assemblies The Super U! Challenge (Super YOU!) came to Oregon City Schools in October. Coy, Jerusalem and Starr were treated to an action-packed assembly that promoted a bully-free school environment by encouraging students to build positive character traits and identify (and stop!) bullying behavior. Being a Super You is all about being your own “personal super hero” and letting your best traits shine – at school and at home. The Super U! Challenge was designed after exciting children’s game shows from T.V., such as “Minute to Win It.” During the 45-minute show, contestants from the audience were invited to take part in imaginative, funny, and wacky interactive challenges that involve oversized props, creative costumes, and yes…even some slime! Each exciting challenge was based around a specific message about bullying and positive character traits that reinforced what students hear in school. The fast-paced format and a hilarious show host ensured that all grade levels had fun! Students were able to participate in the show – and as soon as they saw the wild challenges, there was never any Students put on and participated in a game show called "Minute to Win It." shortage of eager volunteers. He attended a luncheon on October 15 at the 2012 OAGC Conference at the Hilton-Easton in Columbus. This is an exceptional honor. There is only one student selected to represent the state of Ohio each year. Erek is currently a 7th grade student in the Oregon City School District. The Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award Program was launched by NAGC in 1996 with a contribution by Reg and Maggie Green, of Bodega Bay, California, in honor of the memory of their seven-year-old son Nicholas, who was killed in a drive-by shooting while visiting Italy in 1994. The Greens donated the savings from their son’s college fund with a request that NAGC create a program to support the accomplishments of bright children who were approximately Nicholas’s age at the time of his death. With this lump sum contribution of $15,000 (and another $5,000 in 2005), NAGC created the Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award Program, which recognizes the accomplishments of one child in each state, each year. These students must demonstrate excellence in visual or performing arts, academic achievement, or leadership. Erek was nominated in the spring by his 6th grade Language Arts teacher, Mrs. Leigh Ann Kesling. Erek was nominated because of his superior leadership abilities and initiative. He has been collecting denim for recycling since 2009 and to date has collected over 13,000 pairs of denim. Additionally, he is collecting shoes for recycling and hoping to reach another Guinness World Record. Mrs. Kesling stated, “Erek serves as an outstanding role model to young people who want to make a difference. He has found his passion at such a young age that he inspires me to help other students find theirs.” The National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) is an organization of parents, teachers, educators, other professionals, and community leaders who unite to address the unique needs of children and youth with demonstrated gifts and talents as well as those children who may be able to develop their talent potential with appropriate educational experiences. www.nagc.org "Jump On In" Pictured L to R: 1:Just arrived for our first day of Jump Start. 2: Showing off my Kindergarten skills. 3: Practicing bus safety. miles. Bottom left: Top joggers were awarded gift cards. The Jerusalem Parents Group held its 3rd Annual Jog-a-Thon fundraiser on Friday, October 12. Started by Melissa Lammers, this schoolwide event involved students grades K-5, as well as many dedicated volunteers and staff members. The goal of this fundraiser was to promote physical fitness, teamwork, and healthy competition, while raising money to benefit Jerusalem Elementary. Of the funds donated, 100% will be used for the school. This year’s monies are slated for additional equipment for the library, as well as various events and supplies. The students had a lot of fun getting outside and showing their school spirit during this worthwhile fundraiser. This summer ten seniors from Clay High School completed the American Legion’s Buckeye Boys and Girls State programs. The one week camp is a challenging, hands-on, simulated local and state government camp. Girls from across Ohio gathered at Ashland University while boys attended at Bowling Green State University. Clay High School would especially like to thank the American Legion Christ Dunberger Post 537 for working to raise the funding that sponsored Clay High School’s students and for organizing a dinner for all the participants and their parents. Top: Boys attending from Clay were: Front row: Todd Klewer, Dan Klorer and Kyle Gladieux. Back row: Trent Ridenhour and Kevin Delvecchio (Cardinal Stritch) and Michael Ellis (Clay). Top right: Fourth grader Mya Mullins showing a strong finish at the first race of the season. Bottom: Jerusalem students competed against runners from six other school districts in this cross country event. Jerusalem Elementary students got an introduction to cross country running this year by joining the Jets Running Club coached by Jeremiah Przybylski. This group was open to all students in grades 2-5, and met every Tuesday and Thursday morning before school for the first quarter. In all, we had 55 students participating. Most of those students took part in at least one of a series of three cross country race events sponsored by the Lake Young Runners, which is an elementary cross country group out of Lake Schools. An additional focus of training was to prepare for the Eastside Turkey Trot 5K run on Thanksgiving Day. The kids are training hard right now to prepare for this final event to complete the season.
