PAGE 11 HEAT STRESS Vigorous exercise in sport places some people at risk of heat illness. There is an increased risk of heat illness when there is hot and humid weather. We need to take more precautions during hot weather. These include: • • • • • • • • • • • Acquiring adequate fitness and acclimatisation. Acclimatisation for sports activities requires at least 5 days of training in hot or humid conditions, progressing from moderate intensity and duration as acclimatisation develops. Take rest breaks according to the intensity of the conditions. Reduce clothing, utilise shade, wetting the skin, applying ice packs to groin and armpits, drink cool water or sports drinks. Clothing should be light weight, light coloured, loose fitting and provide protection against the sun. Reduce warm up to minimise the increase in body heat and temperature before competition. 2-3 cups (500-750 ml) of cool water or sports drink during exercising (60 mins) is recommended. If exercising for several hours, do not consume enough water to exceed your sweat loss as this can be harmful (low blood sodium). If you have recently experienced a high temperature, infection, diarrhoea or vomiting you should NOT take part in strenuous exercise. Wear a broad brim hat and sunscreen. Run within personal limits. TOILETS Toilets are located behind the club tents and at the swim start. RUBBISH Rubbish bins are provided throughout the event precinct. Please do not litter on course. LOST PROPERTY Lost property will be in the registration area. Please contact the Triathlon Queensland office for assistance following the event – 3369 9600 or [email protected] PAGE 12 WETSUITS The Moreton Bay Triathlon swim is expected to be above 24 degrees, so is not wetsuit compliant. However, we will allow wetsuits if there are jellyfish. Please bring your suit, as it will be announced on the day. These areas are outlined on the Event Precinct map. A full road closure will be in place for the cycle course, however please keep left where possible. There are para-tri athletes in the event, so please be aware on course. Please note that Hornibrook Esplanade is still open in the West direction, so you must obey all Police, Traffic Management and Event Staff instructions. USE OF DRONES Athlete and spectator safety is our number one priority at the Moreton Bay Triathlon. According to Civil Aviation Safety Authority, you must not fly any remote-controlled aeroplanes/helicopters or drones over populous areas such as beaches, heavily populated parks or sports ovals while they are in use. The use of drones and model aircrafts are therefore NOT permitted in the event precinct and/or race course.
