Founded in August 2009, the Friends of Spivey Hall Council, in
partnership with Spivey Hall’s Executive & Artistic Director, develops
initiatives to build community among the Friends of Spivey Hall, to
expand membership, and to advance public recognition of Spivey Hall
and Clayton State University.
The Friends of Spivey Hall Council:
• Undertakes activities to increase membership in the Friends of
Spivey Hall.
• Assists in promoting Spivey Hall’s programming to attract new and
diverse audiences from throughout the metro-Atlanta area.
• Provides advocacy and support for fund-raising efforts consistent
with Spivey Hall’s mission.
• Organizes social and music-related events for the Friends of Spivey
Hall to engage with one another.

Mission Statement
Clayton State University’s Spivey Hall is dedicated to artistic excellence
and enriching the lives of people through access to fine music, consistent
with the vision of its founders, Walter and Emilie Spivey.
Spivey Hall fulfills its mission by presenting performances by
outstanding international classical, jazz and world-music artists in its
acoustically superb, 392-seat recital hall, and through music education
programs developed in collaboration with educators, all of which
address the needs of the diverse communities it serves.

Vlad Iftinca
Pianist Vlad Iftinca is a staff musician at the Metropolitan Opera and the
Staff Music Coach for its Lindemann Young Artist Development Program.
Born in Romania, he received his primary education at Reina Sofia School of
Music and the Real Conservatorio in Madrid, Spain. He pursued additional
studies at the Mannes School of Music and the Juilliard School in New York.
Mr. Iftinca has collaborated with distinguished singers such as Deborah
Voigt, Hei-Kyung Hong, Thomas Hampson, Luca Pisaroni, and Isabel
Leonard. His recital appearances include the Metropolitan Opera’s Summer
Recital Series, Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall in New York City, Los
Angeles Opera, San Francisco Conservatory, Seoul Performing Arts Center,
Hong Kong Arts Festival, Spoleto Festival USA, and Ravinia Festival’s
“Rising Stars” recital series.
Mr. Iftinca has been part of the music staff at the Renata Scotto Opera
Academy in Westchester, New York, and from 2004 to 2006 he collaborated
with “Regina Resnik Presents,” performing in San Francisco and New York.
Other engagements include “Opera on the Avalon” in St. John’s, Canada;
the Samling Foundation for Young Singers in Newcastle, United Kingdom;
and recitals in New York, Utah, and Florida. Last fall he appeared at the
Beijing Music Festival.
Joined by the Spanish pianist Consuelo Martín Colinet, Mr. Iftinca recorded
the complete works for four hands and two pianos of Joaquín Rodrigo, which
was released in 1999 by the Spanish record label Dial Discos.

Isabel Leonard
Highly acclaimed for her passionate intensity and remarkable vocal beauty,
Isabel Leonard continues to make waves in the world of classical music
both at home in the United States and abroad. This season Metropolitan
Opera audiences hear her in two role debuts: as Miranda in Adés’s Tempest
and as Blanche in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmelites. She appears as
Rosina in the English version of Rossini’s Barber of Seville. The season
also brings a role debut with the Canadian Opera Company: Sesto in
Christopher Alden’s production of Mozart’s Clemenza di Tito. This spring,
in addition to Spivey Hall, she appears in recital at the University of Notre
Dame, at the Isabelle Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, with San
Francisco Performances, and in her Zankel Hall recital debut. She will be
the featured soloist in Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 and Berlioz’s Nuits d’été
in concerts with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and she closes the season
in Japan at the Saito Kinen Festival, where she will perform the title role
in L’Enfant et les sortilèges and Concepción in Ravel’s Heure espagnole
with Seiji Ozawa conducting.
Last season’s highlights included Ms. Leonard’s highly acclaimed Rosina
in Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Metropolitan Opera. A Met audience favorite,
she also appeared as Zerlina in the new production of Don Giovanni, with
Sir Andrew Davis conducting. She returned to the Vienna State Opera
for another Rosina and made a sensational role debut as Ruggiero in the
new David Alden production of Handel’s Alcina at Opera National de
Bordeaux. She finished the season at the Glyndebourne Festival with one
of her signature roles, Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro.
Ms. Leonard made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 2007 as Stéphano
in Roméo et Juliette, conducted by Plácido Domingo and starring Anna
Netrebko and Roberto Alagna. This production was also recorded for
video and television transmission and broadcast live over the Metropolitan
Opera worldwide radio network. She has appeared with Opera Colorado,
Fort Worth Opera, Chicago Opera Theatre, and Santa Fe Opera. Her
professional U.S. opera debut was as Stéphano in Atlanta Opera’s
production of Roméo et Juliette in the 2006-07 season. She made her New
York Philharmonic debut in Ravel’s Enfant et les sortilèges, conducted by
Lorin Maazel, and her American orchestral debut in The Three-Cornered
Hat with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the 2006 Tanglewood
Festival, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel.
In constant demand as a recitalist, Ms. Leonard made her first coast-to-coast
recital tour in the 2007-08 season, appearing in Atlanta, Washington, D.C.,
San Francisco, and Fort Worth and ending with her Carnegie/Weill Hall
debut. She appeared as a guest soloist in the Marilyn Horne Foundation’s
75th Birthday Gala in Carnegie Hall and was featured in a solo recital as
part of the Foundation’s On Wings of Song series in New York City. She
has performed with soprano Barbara Bonney in recital at Alice Tully Hall,
presented by the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society. A graduate of
the Juilliard School, she appeared in numerous productions of the Juilliard
Opera Theater, including Offenbach’s Orphée aux Enfers, Mozart’s Finta
giardiniera, Cavalli’s Calisto, and Wargo’s Music Shop.
Ms. Leonard is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the
Beverly Sills Award, the Richard Gold Award of the Shoshana Foundation,
a Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation Award, the William Schuman
Graduation Prize of the Juilliard School, the Makiko Narumi Prize of the
Juilliard School, and the Marilyn Horne Foundation award of the Music
Academy of the West. She was a winner of the Giulio Gari Competition.
A native New Yorker, Ms. Leonard received both her Bachelor and Master
of Music at the Juilliard School. She studies with Edith Bers, and has also
studied with Marilyn Horne, Brian Zeger, Warren Jones, Margo Garrett,
Denise Massé, and Janine Reiss.
