EXPLORING HABITS – PART 1
To survive, an animal needs water, oxygen, food and shelter. It also needs a mate to reproduce.
Plants need light, water, carbon dioxide, mineral salts (nutrients), oxygen and space to grow. A
habitat must provide these things.
The conditions or environment of a habitat are caused by physical environmental factors (e.g.
amount of light). An organism is adapted so that it can cope with the environment in a habitat. For
instance, gills are an adaptation of fish that allow them to get oxygen out of their habitat- water.
Adaptations give different organisms different capes and this helps us tell them apart. Animals are
classified into Gross like vertebrates and invertebrates. Plants are also classified into groups.
Mosses –reproduce using spores, have thin leaves without a chicly, without any roots or xylem
vessels.
Ferns- reproduce using spores, leaves have a cuticle, with roots or xylem.
Conifers- reproduce using seeds (found in cones), needle shaped leaves with cuticles, with roots or
xylem.
Flowering plants- reproduce using seeds (found in fruits), broad flat leaves with cuticles, with roots or
xylem.

Answer the following questions:
1. How can animals and green plants be classified?
2. How do plants, animals and environmental conditions interact in a habitat?
3. What lives where?
4. Which groups of plants have a cuticle on their leaves?
5. Why are mosses only found in damp places?
