Slow down, you’re going to fast…
Please read that title again. You’re not going too fast. You’re going to fast. We’re all going to
fast—and abstain. And not just during these days of Lent; Lent is a great time for us to pick up
the habit of fasting all throughout the year, especially on Fridays. Each Friday we should call
to mind the greatest love the world has ever known. We remember how on Good Friday Jesus
made the sacrifice of his life for me: “This is my Body, given up for you.” Then we remember
his invitation to us, to do the same and return love for love: “Do this in memory of me.” For
Catholics, every Friday is a day of penance to receive more deeply the love of Christ and give
more generously to him in return.
In the past, Catholics did this all together. Everyone knew you don’t eat meat on Friday. If you forgot to observe
this law of abstinence, this law of love, you mentioned it at your next confession. More recently, for the Fridays
outside of Lent, our U.S. bishops conference obtained the permission of the Holy See for Catholics in the United
States to substitute a penitential, or even a charitable, practice of their own choosing. This must still be done on
Friday. For most of us, it’s pretty easy to simply to abstain from meat on all Fridays of the year. During Lent
abstinence from meat on Fridays is obligatory in the United States as elsewhere.
Colin Donovan, one of EWTN’s theological experts reminds us:
The law of abstinence requires a Catholic 14 years of age until death to abstain from eating meat on
Fridays in honor of the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday. Meat is considered to be the flesh and organs of
mammals and fowl. Also forbidden are soups or gravies made from them. Salt and freshwater species of
fish, amphibians, reptiles and shellfish are permitted, as are animal derived products such as margarine and
gelatin which do not have any meat taste.
To that I say, “Bring on the JELLO.” Obviously, an all-you-can eat lobster fest is best left for another day. A
number of people asked about St. Patrick’s Day. This year it fell on a Friday and people were wondering if they
could celebrate with their customary corned beef. It seemed the news was filled with a number of bishops who
offered a blanket dispensation for the day. I wish St. Patrick would have gotten more coverage than the corned
beef. His faithful preaching and prayer on our Lord Jesus Christ and the Most Holy Trinity are truly great news and
worthy of celebration. Our Bishop Daniel Conlon encouraged us to celebrate the day well and reminded us of the
freedom we have in offering another penance on that day. One example would have been to prepare an offering for
a local food pantry before enjoying your meal. You might think this message comes late, but the next Friday is just
around the corner.
I’ll also remind those packing lunches for the school children to help them pick up this habit of abstaining. That
can be done with a healthy lunch, even for those under fourteen. I was in the school lunch room on Friday and one
student felt guilty with their meaty lunch. I said, “Eat what your parents sent. You need lunch.” Remind them for
next week. Another child had a beautiful note from mom. You can add that to the cheese or peanut butter and jelly
sandwich: “Love you. Love Jesus.”
He sure loves us. Let’s love him in return. Let’s love him more than our favorite meat, because his flesh is real
food. And if we’ve forgotten about that, let’s try to remember him again each Friday.
With my prayers,
Fr. Jerome

Thoughts for the Week — On our Lenten journey we are
offered the opportunity to focus on prayer, fasting and
making changes that offer renewal and new life. Some
thoughts:
Allow your faith to be seen.
Go out of your way to help or talk to someone who is
usually difficult or out of your group.
Call, visit, or text someone who is ill or lonesome.
Reduce your speech, talk simply and gently.
Exercise patience, especially with people and situations that
annoy you.
Don’t do any complaining.
