Earls Court wins
Earls Court has again won the Best
Large Estate in Waterford ! We last
won it two years ago.
Inside
The competition, organised by the
City Council and sponsored by WLR,
looked at the ways in which we build
neighbourliness in the estate:

Match and Man
The leaves of brown
The estate never looked as sombre. The
lack of wind in October has meant that the
leaves fell straight down and stayed with
us.
Well done Stephen Daniels of
Mayfield Green
got Man of the
Match.
Story Page 3
The Residents Association has been
forced to dump branches and leaves that
we cut and gathered on Tidy-up Days behind the front walls. Due to cutbacks the
Council won’t take the waste away.

This is our fourth time to win and it
puts Earls Court at the top of the roll
Somebody unknown person has got in on
the act and dumped big branches behind
the right the front wall. This is an eyesore
and must not be repeated.
An old story
Can we again appeal to people who live
on the corner of a street with no footpaths
to reduce the size of their corner hedge to
1 metre off the ground? This is to avoid the
danger of a child running off the main-road
footpath onto the street not being seen till
its too late by a car exiting from your street.
The corner hedge on Auburn Drive is a
good example of a hedge that does not

Given the unwillingness of the leaves to get
up and walk away there will be a tidy-up
on Saturday next, 13th November starting as usual at 10.30am. Please come to
the front of the estate and help Earls Court 
put on its Christmas face.

Daylight robbery
We have had a couple of
daylight burglaries recently. In both
cases entrance was made by the
small fanlights in the downstairs toilet
or utility room windows. Keep the door
to this area locked to limit the amount
of goodies available to the robber.

Tree-thinning
It is hoped to get the City Council to cut down
dead trees and thin out trees that are a hazard
to safety, vision-when-driving or security. They
have promised to do this during the winter hibernation period.
If you have suggestions or requirements for
trees to be removed from public greens contact

A woeful winter
Last winter, from late December to February,
we went through weeks of weather that one
would like to forget but that were unforgettable.
For years we may have thanked the Lord that
we live on a height well above the Suir and its
floods, Viewmount, Collins Avenue, Powerscourt, Ballinakill Park and Ballinakill Downs
but living up high has one drawback—when the
ice comes hard it can turn travel into a nightmare. Many residents fell and hurt themselves.
thanks
We belatedly say Thanks to the residents from
houses near the front of Earls Court and further
up who responded to the call to spread salt on
the main road over a number of weeks at Christmas and in January.
We were lucky enough to get two consignments
of 24 bags of salt from the Council, and we
shared these with most of the estates mentioned
above. One night we had just finished around
11.30pm when the Council salt-spreader swung
into the estate and did it all again.
Well, we didn’t have a slippery road for ages afterwards.

Neighbourhood Watch was set up in
Earls Court almost a year ago. In that
time it has helped in the fight against
Earls Court’s share of break-ins and other minor
anti-social activities.
The Residents Association has paid for the manufacture and erection of Neighbourhood Watch
signs. Deirdre, our Area Co-ordinator of Neighbourhood Watch has told the Newsletter:

That stickers for a front door or window will be
given out to everyone who wants them in due
course. Not all the stickers have arrived yet.

That a new area co-ordinator will be needed by
January because she is retiring (after a job well
done!)

That the following streets still need a person to
volunteer as a street-co-ordinator:
Alderbury Grove, Alderbury Close, Creston
Close, The Orchard, Auburn Close, Medford
Green. Tel: 086 8790458 to volunteer.
The former Centra, and
now Day-Today shop
in Powerscourt is once
more back under the
management of an Earls Court family , Phil and
Declan Purcell from Brentwood Crescent. It is
open from 7.15-8pm Monday to Friday, 8am-8pm
on Saturday, and 8.30-6.30pm on Sunday.
DayToday serves daily newspapers, phone credit,
bin tags, hot and cold deli, tea, coffee and many
other conveniences. It also offers Bill Payment
Facilities through the Postpoint terminal. The
Purcells speaking to Earls Court residents
through the Newsletter say:
“We are a local friendly family living in the community for the last 18 years and hope with your
support to give people what they want. We will
be flexible in changing to meet people’s needs.
We will be providing a valuable service to our local community and we look forward to serving you
in the near future.”
Both Ourcells have served on the Residents Association Committee . We hope Earls Court residents will now support them.

Maxol makes a comeback
The derelict Maxol garage opposite Collins Avenue is to reopen. Maxol re-bought the site and now
has Planning Permission to open a petrol station,
shop, off-licence and small café area in a Mace
retail building. Some Ballinakill Avenue residents
objected that the off-licence with lead to anti-social
behavior.
Spot the big house
opment Plan, and that local similar businesses will
be hit, also contrary to the Development Plan.
McAvinue further argued that the new building (it
has a zinc roof and a flat roof—see drawing) will
clash with its surroundings, and that the disability
facilities will be substandard.
City Planners may have forgotten that the previous

Pride of Place
Waterford City Council has produced a leaflet for
the guidance of adult cyclists. It is an excellent
leaflet, originally written by UK National Standard
cycling instructors for cyclists in Galway.
One of the surprising recommendations is that
where there is not a cycle lane the cyclist should
take up his/her primary position—in the middle of
the left hand car-lane. “Adopt it when you can
keep up with traffic, or when you need to emphasise your presence or deter risky overtaking.
You are not allowed to impede others unnecessarily but you are not obliged to let someone pass
if you think there is any risk to yourself”.

Satellite Dishes
The problem of satellite dishes is still with us.
Those companies who erect satellite dishes are
well aware that it is against planning by-laws to
erect a dish on a front wall or on a chimney.
We ask all satellite owners to
call back the company who installed the dish and get them to
move it to the side.
Please remember that satellite
dishes are outlawed on front walls because they
are an eyesore to your neighbours.
Please support the ongoing annual collection of €35 for the upkeep of the estate.
