“It is initiatives such as the LGBTQ Families Engaged evening series that provide the entire community of Durham with the
opportunity to embrace diversity and practice inclusivity. For LGBTQ community members in particular, these events demonstrate
Durham’s commitment to inspiring positive change,” said Tanya Shaw-White, President of PFLAG Canada Durham Region . “PFLAG
Canada is proud to be partnering with the Durham District School Board on this important initiative.”
“The DDSB had declared the 2014-2015 school year as the Year of the Ally to reaffirm our commitment to supporting all
dimensions of diversity,” said Director of Education, Martyn Beckett. Our goal is to create welcoming and accepting school
communities where we recognize marginalization, speak up about it, and work together to plan action to create positive social
change. LGBTQ Families Engaged provides an important forum for working together as allies to create positive and affirming
space for the LGBTQ voice in our school communities.
