March 2017 17 Village Hall Report And Our Lady and St Joseph Osgodby: Sadly the Village Pantomime had to be cancelled this year, due to a fall in numbers and illness amongst the cast. We didn’t have a chorus so this made it very difficult to carry on, the decision had to be made and it was agreed to cancel, but hopefully next September we will be able to recruit a full cast and produce a Village Pantomime once again. As many of you will know, unfortunately the Village Pub had closed in November so we were unable to hold our traditional carol singing and final 100 Club Draw on Christmas Eve, so the draw was held at our January meeting. The winners were: April 2nd 5.30pm Mass May 7th 5.30pm Mass June 4th 5.30pm Mass (PoC Fr.Robert Thacker 01673 842323) From the Vicar: Under Bishop Christopher’s leadership the Diocese of Lincoln has been developing a vision statement. Each Parish Group is being encouraged to develop their own vision too we have chosen, for the Kelsey Group, ‘to ensure a faithful, confident and joyful worshiping community in each village’. A useful time to reflect on the Christian journey is Lent. If it is helpful to you, please join in with our Wednesday evening Service and Holy Week Good Friday Service and of course, Easter Day. £300 Martyn Bowley £150 Mrs. K. Davenport £75 Dave Boyles £50 Chris Coe. Last summer time we employed a “mole catcher” for the playing field. Up to now he has caught over 30 moles and the field is looking a lot better. However, looking at the tyre tracks, it seems that some people are using the field to practice driving! Please don’t, it causes ruts and poses a risk to others using the field legitimately. We continue to attempt to refurbish the playing equipment and applied for a “Co -Op” grant for this. We have been advised that we have got through to the final short list and should get to know the outcome on Wednesday, 1st March 2017. The decorating in the Village Hall was finished during the Christmas holidays and during February Half Term the floor to the toilets was painted. The Summer Fete will be held on Saturday 10th June 2017, more details will be available nearer the time. In the meantime if anyone would like to donate raffle prizes, tombola prizes, books and cakes, please see me at the Post Office. Also offers of help on the day would be much appreciated. With my best wishes The Village Hall AGM will be held on Monday 3rd April, starting at 7 p.m. Rev Geoffrey Spencer Ann Bennett [email protected] Horticultural Society And the Churchwardens: : From December our Charity Services have already raised around £250 for the Children’s Society, L.I.V.E.S., SSAFA Forces Help and the Lincolnshire Trust for Cats and we look forward to increasing the generosity of support for other charities with a significant local presence. March 2017 5 LIVES report Church News We are all aware of the pressures that are affecting our National Health Service, and we watch with increasing dismay at its apparent deterioration despite the heroic efforts of the front line staff. None of us wants to add to that burden, and we are asked constantly not to overuse the emergency services unless it is really necessary. However, if it is an emergency…. DO NOT DELAY… DIAL 999 and get help quickly. LIVES First Responders can and do help by being available locally so that we will almost always be there to start taking action before an ambulance crew arrives. BUT [there is always a “but”] responders can be dispatched only by Ambulance Control after a 999 call is made, and the responder has to be “on duty”. In this area currently we have very few active responders, so, sadly, there is a good chance that we will not be on duty when a medical emergency happens. What then? Well, do not delay, in an emergency dial 999. They are the experts, and they will help. They will not mind, and you will not be “wasting their time” They will advise you if you need to take further immediate action. Where needed, help will be on its way. April 16 If a LIVES First Responder is on duty somewhere else in the area then Ambulance Control will know and, if appropriate, will send them . Osgodby First Responders have responded to over 30 emergency 999 calls in our area in the last 12 months, by covering less than two days a week. We would love to be able to cover more, but, frankly, there are not 2 pm Good Friday Service t St. Peter’s Kingerby th And St Margaret’s Usselby: March 16th 3pm Mothering Sunday Evening Service enough of us. If you think you can help, please let us know. 6 March 2017 May 28 June 28 th 3 p.m. Evening Service March 2017 15 School Council Elizabeth Bedells The School Council are regularly asked to setup for events like Bingo or lunches at the Village Hall. One of our most recent achievements was helping to interview 3 possible candidates for our next Head Teacher, and the successful candidate was Mr Taylor. Handing over the Baton Elijah Swan It has all come to an end and sadly Mrs Fincham is retiring. We are getting a new Head called Mr Taylor. He used to work at Coddington Primary School near Newark. He is excited to work in the school. Harry Moore says “He is easy to talk to.” Our current Head Teacher has been with us for 17 years working 10 years in Class 1 and 7 years as the Head. Mrs Fincham is going to’ hand the baton on’ as she would say! There are many other events that could have been written about but these are the ones that the children have reported on. This will be the last time – as you will have gathered – that I will have the pleasure of sending copy for the Parish Pump. It has been an honour being a member of staff at Osgodby Primary School and ultimately the Head Teacher. I am disappointed for the children that ‘the powers that be’ have not enabled the school to have better facilities, especially in not having a large indoor space (AKA a hall!) I do feel that I am leaving the school in good hands and I am looking forward to handing ‘over the baton’ to Mr Taylor. I am in no doubt that he will continue to build on the potential of Osgodby School in the community. Howard Stanley Gobey Many of us were saddened to hear of Howard’s illness and subsequent death and it was a testament to his place in the village and wider community that his funeral was so well attended. One of his good friends, Alan Wilkinson, has penned the following obituary. Howard Stanley Gobey was the landlord of the Crown Inn for many years, taking over as landlord with his mother - Doreen - when his father died suddenly in 1984. At the age of 28 Howard came to live with his parents shortly before the Queens Jubilee. Previously he had run a newsagents shop in Sheffield. Howard proved to be an enthusiastic gardener and was an outstanding golfer, he was interested in many sports particularly snooker where in its day the Crown had many teams and on occasion hosted celebrities from the world of Snooker, An enthusiastic cyclist when younger Howard would often cycle to Cleethorpes for an ice cream and on one occasion after a party spent the night on Cleethorpes front eventually being found by the police and on being informed of his whereabouts his parents thought his was at home having a lie in. Howard was a generous supporter of village charities, at one time he sponsored the Village Football Team as well as being a team player. Support was also given to the Harvest Festivals and Christmas Eve Carol services which were held in the pub. These occasions were well supported and Howard carried on with the pub full of customers often refusing any help such was his nature. Golf became Howard’s life and he spent many hours with his dog by his side firing golf balls down the paddock to the rear of his bungalow perfecting his drive. Unfortunately the pub trade dwindled and Howard chose to only open a few evenings a week becoming famous among his clientele at closing time for saying “you don’t want any more do you” Many thanks for all your support. Thanks, Alan and R.I.P. Howard. Jill Fincham 14 March 2017 March 2017 7 Howard Stanley Gobey An appreciation Jean and Archie Dodds have also written their thoughts about Howard. Howard was our good neighbour from 1984, when we moved to Osgodby. Although a man of few words he was generous and kindly; goose eggs, tomatoes and wonderful Victoria plums passed over the garden fence. In return our cats moved in with him and his aunt. This was unrealised by us until Howard brought one, ginger and white, to the surgery. Subsequently this cat suffered a major injury and was devotedly nursed by Howard over many months, making a remarkable recovery, to the amazement and delight of Archie’s colleagues. As we all know he was equally devoted to his German Shepherds. We were relieved to find he kept a very orderly pub. Boxing Day will never be the same as the “children” will not be able to have a game of snooker after supper. One year they were so late going to the Crown that Howard said it was that he was closed. Ever resourceful the WAGS were sent to plead. Howard gave in and even offered snooker lessons to one of the WAGS. does the most work on it gets to meet Sam Ruddock, Sarah Outon, Shona McCallin, Sophie Allen and Ben Smith (successful sporting personalities). Thomas Hunt, Lily Packer and I have been specially picked by Mr Foster to be Sport’s Ambassadors. Thomas Hunt Our little team have to work together to start clubs after school and during breaks. We have to try and motivate people to join clubs and try to make people have more fun and continue to enjoy their time at our amazing school. Basketball Harry Sharman On Tuesday 28th February some pupils from our school from Class 3 and 4 (including me) went to Caistor Yarborough Academy to battle it out with Nettleton in basketball. There were supposed to be a few other schools but they didn’t come. Classes 3 and 4 had a wonderful time playing Nettleton. At the end Osgodby and Nettleton were very tired, so was I! At the awards Class 3 didn’t manage to beat Nettleton but Class 4 did! The score was 6-4 to Nettleton and 14-2 to Osgodby. Osgodby came home triumphant with 2 trophies. All in all basketball is quite fun. Joe Bennett The Year 3 and 4 game was very close but we lost. The games were hard but I managed to score 2 goals first try. If you got it in first try it counted as 2 points. We managed to win; the other schools couldn’t get through our defences so that was how we won. The snooker tournaments organised in the Crown brought publicity and visitors to the village. Many lads enjoyed playing for the village football team sponsored by the Crown. His care and concern for his aunt was exemplary; indeed, in his own way he cared for the community of Osgodby. We admired his bravery and determination to carry on at home for as long as possible during his final illness. There is no doubt he appreciated all the help he received. Archie and Jean Dodds 8 March 2017 March 2017 13 Parish Pump March 2017 Osgodby Primary School This quarter of the Parish Pump has been written by Class 4 with the majority of submissions from Year 5 pupils. Elizabeth Bedells Since the last Parish Pump our school has once again been up to lots of exciting things including going to the pantomime before Christmas, the Christmas Concerts, Lunch and parties. Kindred Spirit Ruby Dring This (academic) year we have been in touch with Olga Primary School (Tower Hamlets, London). Class 4 pupils have been paired up with pupils from Olga Primary School. They did a fact file about themselves and sent them to us and then we did a fact file about ourselves and sent them those. Quite a lot of Class 4 are happy with who they got paired with I am. It is all very exciting. Class 4 love the Kindred Spirit Project and we look forward to going to London and seeing Olga School. Aqua Splash Tournament May Smith On 1 9th January some of Class 3 and 4 went to the Swimming Gala at Louth Swimming Pool. Everyone had at least one race each. There were all different types of stokes like; front crawl, breast stroke, butterfly and back stroke. There were 9 other schools there for us to compete against. I did the 25m back stroke race and I came first from what I have been told. We had lots of firsts, a few close 2nds. Class 4 came 4th but Class 3 got 1st and are now going to the County Final! Book Fair Emily White On Wednesday 22nd February it was the Osgodby Primary School Book Fair. There were loads of different books including Tom Gates, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Amy Lee, The Darkness Hex and the Worst Witch. Also there weren’t just books. There were bookmarks, rubbers, pencils, pencil sharpeners and posters. The Book Fair ran for three days and was after school. Class 4 got out the big metal boxes with all the books in. Class 4 took a lot of money but we don’t know how much profit yet. The books were quite expensive but they were very good! Jessica Gothorp Loads of pupils and their parents came to get a book from the Scholastic Book Fair. There were loads of great books for ages 2 – 12. People could also buy stationery, posters and bookmarks. This awesome event started on Wednesday and finished on Friday. People are reading these books in school and out! Mrs Greig and Mrs Fincham both held this event. Many pupils used their one pound book token they got given. The Legacy Challenge Fergus Downie At school we are going to be taking part in the Legacy Challenge. Osgodby School has done this many times before but who ever 12 March 2017 March 2017 9 In the Garden “The ever-silent spaces of the East, Far-folded mists, and gleaming halls of morn.” In Praise of Trees As attentive readers will have worked out long ago, I am deeply in love with trees. In this I’m not alone: Unlike us mortals, trees have the trick of perpetual youth: regeneration. Trim, cut or lop them and they put out fresh green growth, as hedge or coppice or pollard. Trees are living marvels. “I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree.” (Joyce Kilmer) “Huge elm, with rifted trunk all notched and scarred, Like to a warrior's destiny! I love To stretch me often on thy shadowed sward, And hear the laugh of summer leaves above.” (John Clare) www.thegardentiger.co.uk “Loveliest of trees, the cherry now Is hung with bloom along the bough...” (A E Housman) “I’d like to go by climbing a birch tree, And climb black branches up a snow-white trunk Toward heaven, till the tree could bear no more, But dipped its top and set me down again. That would be good both going and coming back. One could do worse than be a swinger of birches.” (Robert Frost) Why such devotion? Well, for a start, trees are an example to us: they teach us how to live well. They re-invent themselves, adapting to season. Even towering high, they are humble, steadfastly rooted in solid ground. They live in harmony with their environment, cycling and recycling air, sun, soil and water. They are not acquisitive: they take only what they need, and give back what they do not, for the world to share. And they are models of hospitality, welcoming migrants and refugees to their roots and branches and leaves – even the fungi and larvae that consume or damage them. We have much to learn from trees. But there’s more. They represent not only what we should aspire to be, but what we can only dream of becoming. Like Icarus, they reach for the sun. Like him too, they may fall. Unlike Icarus, though, they can rise again - from the living root. In some ways trees are immortal: many, like elm and alder, spring from underground so readily that the arising trees and saplings may be considered as members of a single, spreading organism which does not die. The tragic mortal Tithonus in Greek myth, falling in love with Eos, the goddess of the dawn, was granted immortality by the gods, but not, alas! eternal youth. Here he laments in Tennyson’s monologue: “Me only cruel immortality Consumes; I wither slowly in thine arms, Here at the quiet limit of the world, A white-hair’d shadow roaming like a dream 10 March 2017 TOPCAT Report TOPCAT hosted the Great American Song Book on Saturday 11th February at the Village Hall.
