Morocco March 11 – 22, 2016 Location Rabat, Morocco – Students will begin and end their trip in Rabat. Rabat, with a population of 650 000 is the capital and second largest city in Morocco. Rabat maintains a relatively important textile industry and serves as the second most important city in the country after Casablanca. Eligible Participants Upper School students interested in developing broader intercultural perspectives. An intercultural residential experience is required for any students pursuing the Appleby College Diploma with Distinction in Global Leadership. Cost The cost of each of the Intercultural Trip is $5000 This includes all air travel to/from Pearson International Airport (rides to the airport can be arranged for boarders as needed), all travel costs while on the trip, all project costs and all planned meals for the duration of the trip. Additional costs will include passport fees, immunizations and spending money for snacks and souvenirs. Please Note: Financial assistance is available through application in person to the Business Office. In most cases, where there is demonstrated need, we follow the model of the school paying one third, the family paying one third, and the student eventually paying the final one third. Appleby College makes every effort to ensure that all students at Appleby College are able to participate in these trips and wants to try to ensure that financing is not the roadblock. Application Process Go to the Intercultural Learning Programme Info Site in e.school. Complete the Appleby College Intercultural Trip Application Form, and submit this, with a deposit of $1500, 2 passport photos and a photocopy of your passport photo page to the Global Education Office by Monday, October 19. Morocco Itinerary (tentative) March 2016 Day One Day Two Day Three to Seven Day Eight to Nine Day Ten Day Eleven Arrival mid-day at Rabat/Sale Airport and check into accommodations for a quick freshen up and lunch. After lunch there will be an orientation session and a casual walking tour of the old medina. We will have an early evening dinner with a family in a Riad house in the old medina of Rabat. There will be a traditional Moroccan band - a chance for some dancing - and a henna artist will decorate the female students with (temporary!) natural henna tattoos, and the male students will get a traditional red Moroccan tarbush hat (a fez hat). The day will begin with an Arabic class Walk around the ancient walled city of Chellah (near the Medina of Rabat.) with a picnic lunch in the ancient Roman ruins. In the afternoon, we will continue touring various sites including Mohammed V Mausoleum and Hassan Tower, the fortressed ancient Kasbah and a walk down the craft street of rue de Consul in the old medina. Dinner in a traditional Moroccan home. These days will also begin with an Arabic class We will get involved with the renovation/painting/peace garden at local community projects in the mornings The afternoons will include various activities such as: visit to a traditional Moroccan tailor/seamstress, learning how to cook in a Moroccan kitchen, Arabic calligraphy class, learning about Islam and Islamic Culture, archaeology museum, Villa des Beaux Arts and visit to the traditional potteries to work with a potter Overnight trip to Marrakesh. We will tour Marrakesh and see the massive souks of the old medina, Jam’a El Fna Square: (storytellers, tooth-sellers, snake charmers), old palaces (Bahai Palace, Majorelle Gardens). After some shopping and a late lunch and then back to Rabat. Today is the final Arabic class and we finish up our work at the peace garden We will have a project ceremony with tea and finishing with a cultural feedback session The afternoon we will play games and sport with kids from a project that supports young people from la less privileged area in Salé.
