T20 CHAMPIONS 2016-17
What a night at the SCG! T20 cricket does not get any better than this! This game should have been
on TV as an appetiser for the BBL. It came down to the last ball and it went our way. Commiserations
to Mosman. Thanks to Kingsgrove Sports for sponsoring such an exciting competition.
Congratulations to our players and coaches on giving it everything. Congrats to Daniel Hughes (who
should be batting for Australia) for his Man of the Match performance. #ALLIN.

GREEN SHIELD
The Green Shield boys have had a great start to the season, winning the first 3
rounds against Hawkesbury and Blacktown. Captain, Sam Fanning, is piling on
the runs and well supported by his talented team.

In the 3 round match today at Alan Border oval, Mosman batted first and
reached 9/174 after the 50 overs. NDs grabbed another victory … 8/175 with Will
Fort (son of Old Boy Tony) 79*. Gotta be better than his old man!
All players and Coaches (Rod Hokin & Josh Miller) are to be congratulated.

The team will play 9 matches on tour (8 in Barbados and one in Southern California) and also
enjoy some memorable tourist attractions, including visiting Universal Studios; a tour of
Kensington Oval (Test Cricket venue where Australia won the 2007 World Cup final); Catamaran
sailing under the Caribbean sun; a day at Disneyland, Anaheim; a Major League Baseball game
(either LA Dodgers or Anaheim Angels); and a tour of Los Angeles; Hollywood Blvd, Sunset Blvd
and Santa Monica’s famous Pier.
The full touring party to the West Indies and USA in mid-2017 will total 37 people, comprising 14
players, 3 officials and 20 family supporters. The tour will be a once in a lifetime experience for
all concerned and will also be beneficial for ND’s future AW Green Shield prospects. In 2015,
the Coaches’ Association and NDCC took an U/15 representative team on a tour to Sri Lanka,
where all the players significantly developed their skills in conditions that were quite different to
the turf pitches in Sydney. The following season (2015-16), the NDCC
AW Green Shield team, led by Rod Hokin (Head Coach), went through
the 7 preliminary rounds as undefeated minor premiers, only to bow out in
the quarter-finals.
Nearly half of the team going to the West Indies and USA next year are
already directly involved with NDCC as members of the AW Green Shield
team in 2016-17, or participants in the NDCC Junior Academy, receiving
regular coaching to further develop their skills and confidence. It is also
anticipated that other players in this West Indies touring team will go on to
represent NDCC at AW Green Shield level or later as Grade players.
HARPO’S VAULT – First Grade
Once again congrats to the club as a whole for the results at the half way point
in the season. However, special mention to the First Grade team on their win
on the last ball in the final of the 20-Over comp. I wasn’t at the game but
reading Drifter’s graphic description of it made me wish that I had been.
Enthusiasm, pride and emotion oozes from our president when he talks or
writes about our club and it is absorbed by all members. Mind you, it has
always been inherent in ND’s psyche since our birth back in 1925 but it has
never been higher than it is at the moment. It couldn’t be summed up better than did Danny Friedrich
when he wrote to the club members expressing his thanks for the concern and consideration it had
showed to him on his recent tragedy: “The spirit, comradery and care has been overwhelming from
the ND’s family, and makes me feel incredibly lucky to be a part of this great club.”
Every member who has played for the Firsts this year was a part of this wonderful win on Sunday but
if readers will allow me some “Vault licence” I’d briefly like to mention one.
When I first saw Jono Whealing playing schoolboy cricket I said; “This lad will wear a baggy blue cap.”
Well so far I haven’t been correct – so far! I don’t understand why the NSW selectors have
overlooked this fine batsman because, let me tell you, boys and girls, I have seen most of the Blues
players since the war and without equivocation can state there are a number of these who weren’t as
good as Jono – in the past and now. However, it is not too late and in the meantime, Jono and his
teammates can concentrate on winning the comp for the powerful NDs.
[Another umpire story.] It was a county limited-overs game in England and, although in the middle of
summer it is quite light at 9pm, at 9:30 the eyes are beginning to squint a bit. So the batsman walked
over to the ump and said, “I’m having difficult seeing, how’s the light?”
The ump pointed to the sky and asked, “What’s that?”
“The moon,” answered the player.
The ump replied, “Well, how much bloody further do you want to see! Play on.”
CONGRATULATIONS TO HARRY CONWAY – “SIXERS” SIGNING
Harry was signed up by the Sydney Sixers today. He joins 4 other ND
players involved in the Big Bash:
Sixers: Brad Haddin, Nathan Lyon, Daniel Hughes
Thunder: Chris Green
We will miss them in the grade ranks in January but we are lucky enough to have
the talent to battle through it.
