Merrill Film Society
February 8, 7 pm: Casablanca (1942)
In conjunction with the 2017 Camden Conference, whose
theme is Refugees and Global Migration, we present two films
about refugees and the interstitial space in which they exist .
Rick's American Cafe, the nightclub that Humphrey Bogart's
expatriate character owns in Casablanca, is one such space,
where people pass through on their way from somewhere else
to no place in particular, and where the usual rules don't seem
to apply. Casablanca is one of those films where everything
seems to fall together perfectly. It is remembered for being a
great love story between Rick and Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) and
for having a number of quotable lines ("Of all the gin joints...",
"I'm shocked -- shocked! -- to find gambling...", "Here's looking at you, kid," even lines that no one ever spoke, like, "Play it
again, Sam").
February 22, 7 pm: Children of Men (2006)
Children of Men was made ten years ago and takes place ten
years hence, but it looks like it could take place today. The human race has become infertile, and most of the world has become chaotic. The U.K. remains relatively stable, but in London they are rounding up and jailing anyone not born there.
Some non-natives belong to a militant underground with its
own political plans. One former activist has to help a miraculously pregnant woman reach scientists dedicated to saving the
human race. It's science fiction, to be sure, but it is gritty and
realistic rather than neat and futuristic. With Clive Owen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Caine, Julianne Moore, and directed by
Alfonso Cuaron (Y Tu Mama Tambien, Harry Potter and the
Prisoner of Azkaban).
Monday Matinee
February 27, 1pm: Manchester by the Sea (2016) After
the death of his older brother Joe (Kyle Chandler), Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is shocked to learn that Joe has made him
sole guardian of his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Taking
leave of his job, Lee reluctantly returns to Manchester-by-theSea to care for Patrick, a spirited 16-year-old, and is forced to
deal with a past that separated him from his wife Randi
(Michelle Williams) and the community where he was born and
raised. Bonded by the man who held their family together, Lee
and Patrick struggle to adjust to a world without him. Rotten
Tomatoes.
Eco Kids Presents
February 21, 6 pm FernGully (1992)
Magic and adventure await in FernGully, a spectacular rainforest where a bat named Batty, whose radar has gone haywire,
joins together with Crysta, Pips and the Beetle Boys to save
their marvelous world from the evil Hexxus. Ignoring the warnings of her friends, Crysta, the curious tree fairy, explores the
world beyond FernGully. She discovers Zak, a real live human
who is helping demolish the rainforest. Once Zak sees the
beauty and magic of FernGully, he vows to save it. But it may
be too late. The diabolical Hexxus is on the loose and intent on
destroying all of FernGully.
