ALEPH CLASS NEWSLETTER February 2017 | Shvat 5777 ARIOT / TAL AM HEBREW PROGRAM In Hebrew, we learned the Lamed story: We enjoyed the story of Doda Leah who goes to school with her ice cream truck, bringing GLIDA with different flavors to the kids. We noticed that since the word for ice cream, glida, ends with kamatz and the letter hay, it is a feminine form and we have to use the feminine form for the colors too: GLIDA ADUMA, GLIDA CHUMA, etc. The children loved making the ‘decorations’ for the ice cream truck. Some of them wrote the sounds that the truck made: “LEE! LA! LEE! LA!”. Some wrote in Hebrew script and some in print, according to their abilities. Some created the menu, drawing the different ice cream cones and naming the flavors in Hebrew, for exampla: SHOKOLAD, VANIL, BANANA, etc. Doda Leah is so kind. When she noticed that Gila is sick, she drove to her house to bring her the ice cream. We enjoyed acting the story out and when the computer randomly picked a boy for the job of DODAH Leah, we took this opportunity to change it to DOD Louie, and with it changing all the verbs to the masculine form. We had a lot of fun while learning. We love the Tal Am and Ariot program! The 7 species that Israel is blessed with are: Wheat and Barley, (bread, challah, matzah, a mitzvah from the Torah.) Grapes (wine for kidush) Pomegranate, (on Rosh Hashanah we ask God to make us as full of good deeds as the RIMON is full of seeds). We also learned how they help us do mitzvot: Figs (there’s always a ripe fruit around for us on the fig tree, just like there’s always something to learn when you open a Torah, and there’s always an opportunity to be kind!) Olives Oil for the Menorah in the holy Temple and for Chanukah. Dates as sweet as honey, like a righteous person each of that tree’s parts are useful: The baby branchlulav, the branches - s’chach on the sukkah, the trunk and dead branches to make a fire at night in the desert, and the fruits give you a lot of energy and shade in the hot desert. What a blessing!!!. THE SIFRONIM WE READ FOR TUBISHVAT We read the little booklet "ETZ KATAN, ETZ GADOL". We laughed as Hillel figured out and thanked God for creating small fruits on big trees so if they fall on our heads it won’t be disastrous! PAGE 3 We also read the little booklet "LAMA OHAVIM ETZIM?" Why Do We Love Trees? We love them for the food and shelter they give us; for the animals, for their beautiful flowers, foliage and more. We wrote those in Hebrew on the beautiful big tree stickers we received from JNF. When it was time to read the little booklet “ARIOT BROSH HASHANAH LA’ILANOT” comparing the trees to us, the Jewish people, on our Rosh Hashanah, we had the blizzard. We took the booklet home to read and watch from our windows. The trees’ heads are covered with a white kippah of snow and from their branches are hanging the white sheets of ice, just like a tallit. The wind hauling and whistling like a shofar between them. They move their trunks and branches as in prayer, a prayer for a good year for rain and for plenty of fruits. Of course we do that too, pray with them, as their good year is our good year! Shanah Tova La’ilanot! THE TU-BISHVAT SEDER PAGE 4 We had a wonderful Tu-Bishvat Seder including a Haggadah. We enjoyed feeling grateful for the abundance of variety of fruits that God gave us and the diligence in which the wonderful PA parents decorated the school. It felt very festive!!! Enjoy the enclosed pictures. HaMorah Lichter I was so happy Rav Yosi gave me the task to read a quote from the Talmud about the fig tree.
