Above: Adjustable monitor arms play nearly as important a role in maintaining healthful postures
at work as an ergonomic chair. That’s because the body will adjust however it needs in order to put
the eyes at the right distance from the work at hand. And – here’s the catch – the right distance varies
depending on the individual. One position does not fit all, or even most.
What We Know
There are two dimensions that affect viewing a monitor – eye height from the seated
position and distance from the monitor. Seated eye height varies in U.S. adults by
11.4 inches. That means a standard monitor with its limited adjustability (usually up
and down a few inches and angled a few degrees) sitting on a standard desk is correct for only a few people, incorrect for most people, and incorrect by as much as 11
inches for some.
Preference is also a factor in determining monitor height. This is especially true for
individuals who wear glasses or contacts. We know that the best viewing height for
most people is slightly below their eye height. This slight downward gaze is natural, and
is usually defined by the line between the top of the ear and the eye. Bifocal wearers
typically prefer the screen to be 15 to 20 degrees lower than non-bifocal wearers.
Perhaps even more important than monitor height, though, is viewing distance. Research shows that when people are free to adjust the monitor, they choose a disContinued on page 2
The Eyes Always Win
continued from page 1
tance of between 20 inches and 39 inches – a huge range.
Furthermore, the distance someone prefers often changes
with age. Clearness of vision (visual acuity) and ability to
compensate for glare are 10 times worse at age 70 than
at age 20. One of the conclusions of the research is that
people with progressive addition lenses prefer that the
monitor sit slightly lower than people who don’t wear these
eyeglasses. A person’s preference for screen distance can
also change throughout the workday. Even young workers
experience near-vision fatigue, which can be offset by adjusting the screen distance.
For all these reasons, there is no universal ideal monitor
height or distance. Without the ability to adjust the monitor, a person’s posture will always be determined by their
desire to maintain the best focal distance. A stationary
monitor severely limits a person’s movement, when we
know that regular and varied movement is beneficial to the
spine, muscles, and circulatory system.
Design Problem
When tools don’t adjust to the person’s requirements, he
or she must adjust to the tool, sometimes at great cost to
the body and the bottom line. In order to view the monitor at a preferred distance, people end up with hunched
shoulders and craned necks – an uncomfortable position
they hold for extended periods of time if their work is computer-intensive. Positions that strain the back can lead to
back pain, which is second only to headaches in causes of
lost productivity at work and costs companies as estimated
$7.4 billion a year in workers 40 to 65 years of age. In any
given three-month period, more than 25% of adults experience low-back pain, and eight out of 10 workers will experience it sometime during their career.
There’s also a design problem related to input devices.
Right now the mouse and keyboard are the two primary
input devices, but touch screens are gaining in popularity.
Ergonomists encourage workers to use different input devices throughout the day because variety decreases the
risk of repetitive stress injuries. In order to accommodate
touch screens, however, monitors must have a huge range
of adjustment that allows them to be an input device one
moment and an output device the next.
While these are a few of the primary design problems,
there are others. Collaborative work is the norm in many
offices, but stationary monitors don’t support it very gracefully. Instead, team members squat, lean and hunch over a
shared monitor in an effort to see the work.
Design Solution
Monitor arms that allow for a full range of adjustment address the need for healthful movement. The worker can
then change positions freely throughout the day and adjust the monitor accordingly so that it’s always at the height,
distance and angle ideal for focusing.
Finally, it should be noted that while laptop computers are
great for mobility, they don’t provide much ergonomic support. When they are used with an external monitor and external input devices, however, workers can experience the
productivity that comes from using multiple monitors and
the ergonomic benefit of proper placement.
For single screen applications, a “float and freeze” style
monitor is appropriate. With this style of monitor, a person simply moves the screen to the desired position and
lets go; the screen stays put without having to be locked or
tightened to maintain its position. The screen can also be
lowered to desktop level and tilted toward the ceiling (making it easier to use as a touch screen) or raised to standing
height to support collaborative work.

SO WHAT IS THE FUTURE
LEADERS GROUP ANYWAY
AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Earlier this year I was approached by Vicki Berman in her
general “not so subtle” approach that we all love, to join the
Future Leaders Group. Not very sure of what I was getting
myself into, I joined the Future Leaders Committee. After
just a few short months as a Future Leader I can attest that
somewhere between the wine roster, karaoke and more than a
few laughs I have grown professionally, but more importantly,
built amazing relationships all while having a blast!
All CREW members 35 and under are invited and encouraged
to join Future Leaders. We proudly hit 46 Future Leaders
members last month! The Future Leaders Group is a fantastic
opportunity to peer network in a fun social setting.
We have had two very successful events this year. Karaoke
night at the Hammered Lamb was a raging success. Seeing
Libby, Wanda and Valerie on stage belting out Sweet Caroline
has definitely given me a new perspective of CREW. We also
had an exploration meeting that served as an information
gathering session to get feedback and input from Future
Leader’s on a shared vision for the group. We have some
exciting social events in store for the upcoming months and
look forward to additional opportunities to bring the Future
Leaders together for more networking opportunities.
for September 23rd. Imagine a professional “speed dating”
event with some of the most influential visionaries in our
community! This is an exciting opportunity for all Future
Leaders to not only meet with leaders in our community
but to also network with peers from other industries and
organizations.
We have had a tremendous response to the Mentorship
program, an invaluable opportunity for Future Leaders to
meet with a CREW Mentor over lunch or breakfast in an
intimate group setting. Past mentors include Wanda Riley,
Ray Schuman and Betsy VanderLey. I am humbled by the
fact that so many CREW members are willing to take the time
out of their busy schedules to meet with us “newbie” CREW
members and impart some of their wisdom and knowledge
to us. We are excited to announce upcoming Mentors include
Brian Clark, Jill Kling, Yvonne Baker and Sandy Hostetter.
The Future Leaders Committee meet once a month and is
spearheaded by Vicki Berman and Co-chaired by Tracy de
Lemos and Lindsey Pfaender. We would like to encourage
and invite all Future Leaders to join at least one (or all) of
the subcommittees.
If you are already a Future Leader, keep an eye on your
emails for upcoming event information for the next social
event, mentorship lunch, and industry wide event. If you are
a CREW Member age 35 and under and want to be included
in the Future Leaders Group, please email Tracy de Lemos
at [email protected].
Our industry outreach committee is currently working closely
with the Young Leaders of NAIOP and ULI to orchestrate an

SOUTH BEACH
PRE-PARTY
CREW Orlando’s second quarter Members Only event was
a fabulous South Beach-style “Pre-Party” designed to get
our membership excited about the 2014 CREW Network
Convention and Marketplace, which will take place in Miami.
The event was held at Cocina 214 in Winter Park, and featured
margaritas and sangria, as well as a round of CREW Trivia,
with prizes ranging from free tickets on the CREW Orlando
Convention bus, to discounts on Convention registration fees.
The event included the participation of CREW Network Board
Member Linda K. Adler, who shared all sorts of details about
Convention. Thank you to our event sponsors First American
Title Insurance Company and Winter Park Blue.

MARKETPLACE
LUNCHES
Have you been to a Marketplace Lunch this year? The series,
which was started in 2013, has brought CREW Orlando
members an exclusive opportunity to network and foster
new business relationships. The Marketplace Lunch is a
monthly networking and learning event that includes lunch,
an opportunity to network with fellow CREW members in
a close and personal setting, and a brief presentation by
the hosting firm on a current issue affecting commercial
real estate. Topics this year have included town center
development, transportation, branding, and title insurance.
There are only three lunch sessions remaining in 2014, so
don’t miss out. Who says there’s no such thing as a free lunch?
