As part of the project, the students read Omnivores Dilemma, heard from several guest speakers, took a trip to a local sustainable farm, and viewed excepts from recent food‐related documentaries Supersize Me and Fathead. Part of their challenge was determining which of the numerous issues being considered will have the greatest impact on the overall future of food in our society. After initial exploration of a variety of food‐related issues, students determined a particular issue to focus on for their awareness campaign. To gain background information on this topic, students explored the nature/nurture theme by reading and discussing novels in literature circles and studying the genetic information provided in their biology textbook. Students then interviewed their families to gather information for pieces that are displayed on their websites: a pedigree, poem, picture, and biographies. By creating the website, students come to an understanding about how they have been affected by nature and nurture and write a memo that addresses their conclusions. What determines the price and structure? Believe it or not, a lot of math is involved in the construction and cost of a house! Using their prior knowledge of area and perimeter, students should be able to get a rough estimate of the price of a home that they created. Students were given a plot of land that is between one acre and three acres.The group’s task was to take on the job of an architectural and landscaping firm. They constructed a floor plan of a house that could be built and made construction and monetary calculations based on their design. Students worked to answer these questions as they built their case for the trial: What is the relationship between the increased temperature and pressure in the kernel?What is the internal pressure of a popcorn kernel right before it pops? How can we use the ideal gas law to determine the amount of water in a kernel of popcorn? What is the minimum amount of force needed to do damage to someone’s eye? Could the popcorn kernel popping in someone’s eye cause extensive damage? To market the race students used social media, Microsoft Publisher, video, radio, and website design. Students planned and participated in a training program for the 5K within groups based on running goals. This project's driving question was: "How can we bring our community together to participate in physical activity for a good cause?" What began as a class project became a benefit for a classmate and friend. The students raised $13,000 from the event, which they donated to the family of one of our VNT students who was diagnosed with bone cancer. The funds were used to help cover medical expenses. Proposals included historically accurate opening ceremony ideas, designs for needed venues, medical and health considerations, and cultural diversity. Presentations were given and winning bids chosen by all of New Tech. Newsletters included the biology, geography, and history of the pathogen as well as a creative idea that the students thought would be able to "viral" on the Internet. The words of the speech were evaluated for importance and the words that held the most power were picked out. The students then designed a piece of artwork to reflect and accentuate the key words that held the most meaning and made the speech so powerful. DeKalb New Tech Project Name The Voice of Resilience Course Visual and Verbal Communication Teacher(s) Nancy Irwin, Amy Buchs Students Alexis Darling, Jon Hansbarger Partner name Project description Artists and authors are some of the most courageous people around. They work, exposing their own unique voices to the world. For this project, students read the The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds and worked with a local counselor to learn about resilience and person voice. Students created art and writing rich in voice and submitted work to the Scholastic Awards. Student work form the project won a variety of awards including two Gold Keys in writing and one Silver Key in writing. The winning design is being incorporated into the organization's trademark. Students also wrote Op Eds to call attention to the organization's causes. Students created unique designs centered around a chosen architectural style and constructed formal proposals. Designs will be considered when construction begins on the land. Students determined the best use of the land based on things such as zoning, neighborhood descriptions, etc. The proposal created by students will be presented to the school board and student designs may be constructed on the land.
