Preparation (optional):
◦ Sign up for an account on Sumdog and create accounts for your students.
Activity (60 min):
◦ Review more and less (10 min)
▪ As a class, count up to 10. Write a number line as you count.
▪ Point to numbers randomly and then ask the class to tell you what one
more/less than this number is.
◦ Add/subtract one (15 min)
▪ Show how one more/less can also be written as addition or subtraction
▪ Write some problems on the board.
▪ Have the class express each problem using one more/less, and then use the
number line to find the correct answers.
◦ Play Sumdog games (25 minutes)
▪ Either print out and distribute the handouts, or project it in front of the class.
▪ Play the games together as a class (Street Racer or Canal Clear Up would be
a good choice as the questions aren't timed).
◦ Paired review (10 min)
▪ Have each student think up a problem like the ones they have seen today
(either add/subtract one or one more/less).
▪ Their partner must tell them the correct answer. They continue, taking turns.
