PREFACE TO THE ONLINE VERSION
This survey was compiled in 1985 by Archivist James Shelley, who explains the scope of
its contents in the Introduction that follows. It has been revised and expanded with the assistance
of Monica Blank, John LeGloahec, Erwin Levold, Harold W. Oakhill, and Pecolia Rieder.
Readers will note that the survey is formatted in columns. Reading from the left, readers
will find a box number, a folder number, and the folder title. If only one column of numbers
appears to the left of the folder title, this is a box number. Readers also will see that the format
varies from collection to collection; this reflects the different formats of the collection finding
aids.
For more complete descriptions of particular collections, readers should consult the
online Guide to Archives and Manuscripts at the Rockefeller Archive Center at:

INTRODUCTION TO THE 1986 EDITION
The inclusive dates of this survey are 1910 to 1974. During that period, psychiatry as a
medical science often shifted in its direction. This survey reflects those changes. As a result, the
range of entries is understandably broad. In addition to psychiatry, and often included under that
heading, are related areas of neurology, physiology, endocrinology, genetics, child development,
sex research, criminology, anthropoid research, all types of psychology, and the general field of
mental health.
Among the early Rockefeller philanthropies there was occasional overlapping of support.
For example, the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial, the General Education Board, and the
Rockefeller Foundation all contributed to studies in child development, sometimes to the same
program. It is therefore possible that a subject, individual, or program might be found in more
than one collection.

THE BUREAU OF SOCIAL HYGIENE ARCHIVES, 1911-1940.
John D. Rockefeller, Jr. established the Bureau of Social Hygiene in 1913 for “the study, amelioration, and
prevention of those social conditions, crimes, and diseases which adversely affect the well being of society, with
special reference to prostitution and the evils associated therewith.” He was the main contributor throughout its
history. The emphasis at first was on activities against prostitution, vice, narcotics, and police corruption. After
1928, the Bureau developed a broader interest in criminology, crime reporting, and juvenile delinquency. Included
in this collection is material concerning drug addiction, sex research, and the relation of mental illness to crime.
THE COMMONWEALTH FUND ARCHIVES, 1918-1980.
Founded in 1918 by Mrs. Stephen V. Harkness, the Commonwealth Fund has supported a wide variety of
programs based on the Fund’s initial mandate, “to do something for the welfare of mankind.” The majority of the
grants concern the broad field of health, with specific emphasis shifting as societal needs and conditions changed.
The general aim, however, was to support activities that promised long-range improvement or significant discoveries
of new information or methods. The Fund’s experimental and pioneering attitude is reflected in the multitude of
ground-breaking projects and programs it underwrote or established. The study and improvement of psychiatric
theory and practice and the professional training of psychiatrists played an integral role in many of the
Commonwealth Fund’s endeavors.
This survey presents folder lists for two series in the Commonwealth Fund archives:

Series 25: Mental Hygiene Program, 1928-1950
Throughout the 1930s and 1940s the Commonwealth Fund provided financial support for several unique
projects concerning psychiatry, pediatrics, and the teaching/training of psychiatrists. Public and private institutions,
as well as individuals, were recipients of these grants, with the majority going to universities or colleges. The records
for the special studies consist mainly of correspondence and general files relating to a specific grant. Financial
records are also found in the folders titled “General Files and Correspondence.” The projects are arranged
alphabetically within the following sub-series:

GENERAL EDUCATION BOARD ARCHIVES, 1902-1964.
Established in 1902 by John D. Rockefeller to aid education in the United States “without distinction of
race, sex, or creed.” In 1933, the GEB began its program in Child Growth and Development as a continuation of
programs originated by the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial in the 1920s. Grant concentration was extended to
support research on early infancy and adolescence. Strategy was based on two principles: longitudinal study, in
which groups of children were studied continuously over a span of years; and interdisciplinary research by teams of
specialists trained in physiology, psychology, physical anthropology, and anatomy.
The files below are designated “930 Child Study” in Series 1.3 of the GEB archives. Along with the folder
titles, the finding aid provides some description of the folder contents and lists the names of major correspondents
represented in the file.

LAURA SPELMAN ROCKEFELLER MEMORIAL ARCHIVES, 1918-1949.
Founded in 1918 in memory of Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, Sr., the Memorial was originally planned for
general philanthropic purposes. In 1923, under Beardsley Ruml, its direction was redefined to emphasize an
interdisciplinary approach to the social sciences. This included a strong interest in the new field of child study. Five
major research centers for child study were established at Yale University, Columbia University, University of
Minnesota, University of California, and the State University of Iowa. Grants concentrated on the nursery school
age level and parent education. In 1929, when the Memorial was consolidated with the Rockefeller Foundation, its
support for child study was continued by the General Education Board.

THE ROCKEFELLER FAMILY ARCHIVES, (1897-1960)-1961.
The Rockefeller family philanthropic policy concerning health agencies generally involved giving to larger
“umbrella” organizations that would distribute the funds on a national, state, or local level. Family support for
organizations concerned with mental health increased after World War II with the entry of John D. Rockefeller, Jr.’s
sons into the family office.
Material relating to living members of the Rockefeller family is not available for research.

NELSON A. ROCKEFELLER Papers, 1930-1979.
The papers of Nelson A. Rockefeller (1908-1979) constitute three record groups within the Rockefeller
Family Archives: Record Group 4, Nelson A. Rockefeller, Personal; Record Group 15, Nelson A. Rockefeller,
Gubernatorial; and Record Group 26, Nelson A. Rockefeller, Vice Presidential.
Most of the material related to mental health in the Nelson A. Rockefeller Papers will be found in the
Gubernatorial Office Records, which are on microfilm (862 reels) at the Archive Center. Rockefeller was elected to
four terms as governor of the State of New York, and the subject files in his gubernatorial records are arranged
alphabetically within his four administrations (1959-1962; 1963-1966; 1967-1970; and 1971-1973).
Two series within Record Group 15 — Series 25, Press Office and Series 33, Speeches — contain more
than 200 speeches, press releases, and transcripts of press conferences that touch upon the subject of mental health.
They are listed under “Health, Mental” in the gubernatorial speech index; limitations of space preclude their
inclusion in this survey.
Rockefeller’s Vice Presidential papers (Record Group 26) contain no speeches or press releases specifically
on mental health.
More specific files on mental health in the Nelson A. Rockefeller Papers are listed below.

THE ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION ARCHIVES, 1910-(1912-1979).
Established in May 1913 by John D. Rockefeller “to promote the well-being of mankind throughout the
world.” In that same year, the Rockefeller Foundation began a cooperative relationship with the National Committee
for Mental Hygiene. For many years the foundation continued to support the committee’s studies of the institutional
treatment of the mentally ill. During the 1920s, support for psychiatry was mainly directed towards its acceptance in
hospitals and medical schools as an important and integral branch of the medical sciences.
In 1933, under Dr. Alan Gregg, emphasis was shifted to research and the advancement of knowledge in the
field of “psychobiology.” For the next twenty years, the Medical Sciences Division concentrated most of its
programs in this broadly defined area, focusing mainly upon psychiatry and neurology — and to a lesser degree
physiology, endocrinology, and genetics — to investigate the biological causes of mental and nervous diseases.
Other related programs, some of which were in the natural sciences or social sciences, included child study, social
psychology, industrial psychology, comparative psychology, sex research, anthropoid research, and studies of
chemical dependency.
Record Group 1: Project Files
The project, or grant files, are divided by date of material into nine groups. Only the first two, 1.1 and 1.2, are
included in this survey. Each file within these groups has an assigned country number (200 - 833) usually followed
by a letter designating a foundation program (A - Medical Sciences, D - Natural Sciences, S - Social Sciences). This
then is followed by individual files alphabetically arranged. Additional project files for European countries also
appear in Record Group 6.1: Field Offices, Paris.
Rockefeller Foundation records more than 20 years old are open for research.
A name index for Record Groups 1.1, 1.2, and 6.1 is included at the end of the survey.

THE ROCKEFELLER UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES, 1901-1982.
Established in 1901 as The Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research; the first institution in the U.S.
devoted solely to biomedical research. In 1958, the name was changed to The Rockefeller Institute; in 1965, the
Institute became Rockefeller University.
Only one psychiatric study was ever carried out at the University. In 1939, a team of scientists led by
Alfred Einstein Cohn conducted a study to examine the association of personality type with arterial hypertension.
Although Cohn was a specialist in clinical research and cardiovascular diseases, he also had a strong interest in
psychoanalysis. Included among the Cohn Papers are two folders of correspondence with the Institute of
Psychoanalysis in Chicago.

Appendix 1. ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION NAME INDEX
The following is a list of names of persons who appear in Record Groups 1.1, 1.2, and 6.1 of the
Rockefeller Foundation Archives. This list was compiled using the Rockefeller Foundation’s published annual
reports and from the register entries used in this survey. Both sources are sometimes arbitrary in the use of names, so
this list is only partially complete. Since this list draws upon the annual reports as well as the register, not all the
names in this index will appear in the descriptive entries of this survey; those not appearing in this survey are
marked with an *.
