Sailfish News July 29, 2013 IN THIS ISSUE Coach’s Message Hey guys! I almost hate writing the date on each newsletter…. I can’t believe the summer is going this fast! Luckily there is still some time to jam-pack a tonne more fun in. On Wednesday evening, we will be having our second annual Water Gun Fight and BBQ. Your coaches are armed and ready…you better be too! Then on Saturday it’s the COLBY MEET!!! This is definitely a highlight of the year, and has everything but a firework finale. Hmm, maybe that’s something to look into…just kidding! But seriously, it’s that fun. Also, there are some great events that Kristen Cockerill has been put together, so check out the last page of the newsletter to see what’s coming up. We had two great meets this weekend: Bedford and Lunenburg. I hope you all enjoyed dunking Andrew in the dunk tank! He was pretty soaked by the time he got back on deck. Good job guys! Also, thank you guys for being more flexible and communicative about the relays. I really appreciate it, and it ended up with some of our best relays this year, especially at Lunenburg! e will be doing more individuy This week in practise we will be doing more individual work, so while a set runs, we take people out for some one-on-one work to tackle individual needs. Now that we have a good base on strokes and endurance, it’s time to put the finishing touches on our technique! Provincials are coming up, and we want everyone to finish the year with a bang! Keep your goals in mind and identify your weaknesses. When we take you aside , you should know straight away what you want to improve on in order to attain your goals! One thing I suggest is that you watch videos of professional swimmers (preferably at the Olympics so we can be sure of the quality of swimming) to get a sense of what the final product of a stroke looks like. Here are some names to Google: Annamay Pierse for breaststroke (her world record in the 200 breast at Worlds in 2009), Michael Phelps her butterfly (his gold medal win in the 100 fly, Beijing 2008), Ryan Lochte for backstroke (the 200 back final in Beijing, 2008) and for freestyle, the Australian women’s 4x100 free relay at the London 2012 Olympics. Keep the high intensity guys! So far so good!! Upcoming Events HERE COMES THE WATER GUN FIGHT!!! Your coaches will scratch you if you do not arrive by the time scratches are due! THIS IS THE BEST MEET OF THE YEAR. BRING EVERYTHING GREEN THAT YOU OWN, PAINT YOUSELF GREEN, PAINT YOUR BABY BROTHER GREEN, PAINT YOUR DOG GREEN, AND GET STOKED! Big thanks to Rebekah Chan, our lovely meet manager this year! Warm up: 8:15 Please arrive for 8:00 at the latest! Your coaches will scratch you if you do not arrive by the time scratches are due! Okay. Admittedly not as exciting as the COLBY MEET, but let’s be honest, we are a hard act to follow. The Kentville pool is in YARDS, so all your races will be SUPER FAST. Ever wanted to know what it feels like to look at every single time from every single race and be able to compare your times to a certain Mr Phelps? Well here’s your chance! There will be a canteen, an auction, attractive volunteers, and pretty much everything fun you could possibly imagine. There is also a coaches relay at lunch instead of the Participation relay, so you get to watch your favourite Colby Coaches (plus Richard) destroy the competition of those foolish other teams that think they can take us on. Start practising your cheers and begin mentally preparing for the most psyched up day of the summer. Seriously, bring body paint. DON’T FORGET TO BRING YOUR BOOKLETS TO THE MEET!!! ***PLEASE REMEMBER TO E-MAIL THE COACHES AT [email protected] IF YOU ARE NOT ATTENDING THIS MEET Address: 125 Park St. Kentville, NS B4N 1M5 This is a Template B meet. Washrooms are available in two locations: in the ball field adjacent to the pool and next to the tennis court. There will be a canteen available all day, with hot food served at lunch. There is also a ticket auction to support the Kentvile Marlins. There is no smoking on the property, and the town of Kentville is a smoke-free town itself. I am bulletproof to the extent that a lot of things can be thrown at me, but it's about how much I am prepared to let them affect me".
