Your Questions Answered
What is a sandwich
placement?
Will the student be required to
undertake specific projects?
Typically 12 months of work
experience taken as part of a
student’s degree. Usually forming the
3rd year of a 4 year undergraduate
degree programme.
No - the current guidelines stipulate
that students undertake normal
employment responsibilities and are
integrated as an effective member
of the organisation. It is at the
organisation’s discretion to offer
a project to the student whilst on
placement, but this is not mandatory.
When do placement students
start work?
Students are available to start work
as soon as they finish their 2nd year,
often from July onwards. In order
to meet the requirements of the
placement scheme, the latest they
can start work is mid-December. The
majority will start their placement in
July or August.
Is there a minimum period of
employment required?
To meet the requirements of our
sandwich placement scheme students
must work full-time (35 hours per
week) for a minimum of 36 weeks.
Students are available from July until
the following September so some
employers offer 15 month placements.
However, the norm for most students
and employers is 12 months.
Are students assessed whilst
on placement?
Yes - we require the student to
complete a Placement Assessment
File, which comprises of internal
organisational appraisals, together
with a signed certificate of
attendance. Students are encouraged
to compile their own portfolio during
the period of employment.
How are students monitored?
Each student is assigned a Placement
Tutor who is responsible for visiting
the student whilst on placement.
This visit will incorporate meetings
with both the student and supervisor
to discuss performance and any
issues which have arisen during
the placement. Each student
is encouraged to be in regular
communication with the University/
Tutor by telephone, email or the
University’s intranet facility.
What is the normal salary?
On average our students are paid
£12-16k for a 12 month placement
(pro-rata for anything shorter or
longer). This will vary dependant
on the region, organisation and the
role undertaken by the student. We
attempt to ensure that no student is
paid under £12k unless agreed by the
student and the University prior to
commencement of the placement.
What documentary evidence is
required?
Details of the job specification
Terms and conditions of
employment/contract of
employment
Satisfactory evidence of
appropriate health and safety
regulations and procedures
A copy of the official letter offering
employment to the student
