This year has been filled with learning and fun. With the Maryland Common Core State Curriculum (MCCSC) in place for a year, the TSES staff is comfortable with the change and appreciates the time that this allowed to ensure that concepts are deeply learned and that students have time to explore the answers to questions that emerge from the learning. This summer, families can assist children in learning by allowing them to challenge their own thinking. For example, when a child starts a sentence with “I wonder why…” or “I am trying to figure out…” or “I’ve been thinking about…” keep the conversation going! It is more valuable to give your child time to think this through or to have the opportunity to research the answer than it is to simply give the child the answer. I hope to hear your stories of summer ‘wonder talk’ when you return for the 2014-2015 Open House on August 21st! I would like to take one more moment to thank all of our parent volunteers for their support of the many programs and activities that have taken place this school year. It has been such a busy year with events of great learning value beyond those of a typical school day. The TSES PTA has been a tremendous support in the planning and financing of most of our school events. The work of these volunteers is a demonstration of giving back to the community. We could not provide all of the exciting events without you! The HCPSS Calendar for the 2014-2015 school year is available on the HCPSS website: www.hcpss.org. Click on ‘School System Calendar’ to find the calendar in two different views. During the summer the school office is open from 8:30-4:00 Monday through Friday with the exception of June 24 and July 4. If you need any assistance, please call 410-313-6915. Students were challenged to create a landscape depicting the collapse of the legendary lost city of Atlantis. Some students imagined it as a sunken city covered by a dome, or drew it in “real time” with volcanoes erupting, and other students imagined that a chunk of the earth had blown off the face of the earth taking Atlantis with it as it orbited the sun. Amnah depicted Atlantis at the bottom of the sea, with colorful buildings lined up and mysterious lights on in each building. A long earthquake divides the ocean floor and a volcano is still erupting in the background. Amnah used watercolor and colored pencil to completed her amazing artwork! Congratulations, Amnah, your hard work shows!
