Dear Parents
Calling parents - Careers advice
As Year 12 start their Next Steps Careers Programme after their exams, we are looking for parent speakers who
would be prepared to come into school to give an informal workshop to small groups of students about their
work. We are interested in hearing about a wide range of jobs, the highs and lows, the training and the
prospects. These would mostly take place on a Tuesday morning, if you are willing to help us, please email [email protected]

Rugby High School dominates
dominates the winning list in this year’s Rupert Brooke
Creative writing competition!
Students from Rugby High School attended the annual prize giving ceremony at Rugby School, and
received their cash prizes from the Head of English at Rugby School, Dr Joe Sutcliffe.
The judges commended the students on their creative and ambitious work, and also the sense of fun
and distinctive voices they had brought to the competition.

Water Bottles
As we are now hopefully heading into the warmer time of year, we wondered if you would be able to remind
your daughter to bring in a water bottle into school with her, which she can fill up at various water stations
around the school.
If she is unable to do this or forgets on any day, she can of course also purchase a drink from the canteen at
break or lunchtime also.
Money TopTop-up (Finger machine)
Please be aware that the machine does not currently accept the new £5.00 notes and the new £1.00 coins.
Please can we ask that you do not send these in with your daughter and use alternative denominations, or log
onto www.pmx.parentmail.co.uk to top your daughters account. Many Thanks.
Staff in the Spotlight with Mr Koe
Koe
What 2 things would you take to a desert island?
A pen knife for survival while waiting for someone to pick him
up from the island. He would use a Navy seal satellite phone,
which can receive signal anywhere, in order to call for help since
Mr Koe "would not like to spend too long on a desert!"
What is the most exciting thing you have ever done?
Mr Koe has travelled for 2 years all round South and Central
America, New Zealand and Australia. As well as participating in
many cultural events in these places, diving in the Belize barrier
reef was one of the most exciting things he has ever done.
What is your favourite food?
"My wife doesn't let me order steak at restaurants" since he is
likely to be critical about how over or underdone it is! Anything
that is properly cooked and "tastes fine" is appealing. However,
when asked what he wants his last meal on Earth to be, he chose
apple crumble and a full roast dinner.
What do you enjoy about working at Rugby High?
The students are "independent minded" and always look for "an opportunity to extend their mind." The work
ethic and the way students value having aspirations is what Mr Koe thinks is good about being a teacher at this
school.
What hobbies do you have?
He enjoys going to the gym for exercise after school since he also did a lot of sports in the past. He attends a
club called 'Round Table' for people aged 21-40 in which they organize and participate in charitable events. The
Rugby fireworks is an example of a fundraising event that this group help arrange every year. It is always a
hugely well-attended occasion that many people from Rugby as well as from neighbouring cities/towns come
to.
What is your favourite book?
Considering this was a hard question to answer, Mr Koe's favourite genres, rather than one book in particular,
are science fiction and fantasy fiction stories. Some examples that were mentioned are 'Lord of the Rings' and
'Discworld' by Terry Pratchett.
A book that he can't wait to share with his children who are 6 and 3 years old is 'There and Back Again' by
Evelyn Davey Collin.
When he was younger, his older sister used to call him 'tea mouse' as a nickname because he was smaller than
she was, therefore making 'The Adventures of Tea Mouse' a good name for a children's book about himself.

How many seats?
An outside theatre is in the shape of a regular hexagon with the stage in the centre. The seats are banked up on
all six sides with 50 seats on the top row of each side. There are 10 levels, each level having 3 less seats in each
section than the one above. How many seats are there altogether?
Please take your answers to Mr Alonzi – there are prizes to be won!
Python computing challenge
Students love programming in Python during lesson time. In order to extend students’ skills in a fun and
challenging way, I will be setting a series of challenges in the newsletter for students to complete.
Once students have the completed their final program if they come and show me their code and the program
running they will win a small prize.
Remember you can download Python for free from https://www.python.org/downloads/
Python version 3.5.3 is the version we use in school.

Challenge #6
Fizz Buzz Create a program that replicates the famous game Fizz Buzz.
The program will take an input, e.g. 20, and then print out the list of Fizz Buzz up to and include that number,
where:
• Any multiple of 3 is replaced by the word ‘Fizz’
• Any multiple of 5 is replaced by the word ‘Buzz’
• Any multiple of both 3 and 5 is replaced by the word ‘FizzBuzz’
Extension: 1. Replace any prime number with the word ‘OOPS!’
2. Allow the user to enter the base numbers that they want to replace words with. E.g. 2 and 3, which would
mean:
• Any multiple of 2 is replaced by the word‘Fizz’
• Any multiple of 3 is replaced by the word‘Buzz’
• Any multiple of both 2 and 3 is replaced by the word‘FizzBuzz’
